Awesome video!

A magazine interviewed the producer of Non Non Biyori, and they specifically did
ask him whether the setting of the story corresponds to some real-life place. It
does not. However, it is based roughly on the place where the manga author grew
up as well as places that he has visited. It is also based on places that the anime
director visited. Details in Japanese are here:

What I don't understand is why they have a school that looks like it can accommodate hundreds of students. Is it just a government regulation or something that all schools be a minimum size?

Good question. But maybe that's the amount of students in real life but (because of circunstances we don't know) there wasn't that many on the show.

I think it is pretty simple. There must have been a time when this little village could only be reached by road, meaning most villagers sons could not go to a nearby city for school (since they would be late or too tired if they walked there everyday). But recently (think one or two decades) the train finally reached the village, meaning kids could go to a nearby city where they have a bigger school, since IRL it would be difficult to have a teacher volunteer to live in a rural village to give classes to less than nine students (not to mention it is not cost effective to pay a teacher, a nurse and a school principal). I have a cousin who is a teacher in a semi-rural area and he prefers to drive two hours to and from there every day instead of renting a house far from the city.

Makes sense.
