As far as I can tell, this is the first time in the history of anime in which a watermelon
has been cut up into pieces using a knife and eaten normally. Typically we see
somebody put on a blindfold and use a baseball bat in the traditional Japanese game
"Suika-wari" ( スイカ割り ). In Fumoffu, Sousuke used a shotgun. See here for details:

That close shot of Renge conveyed her sad feelings very well without relying on words. I liked the execution. Her reaction was cute when she got a mail from Honoka. It was a brief encounter, but maybe it will be one of her best memories from the summer break.

Decided to try putting down everything that seemed comment-worthy in the first watch through this time. This could turn into a long post.

Ren-chon catching that crab. Epic. And her brilliant naming sense strikes again. But unfortunately she has to put it back again, rather than keeping it as a pet.

Poor Natsumi's watermelon got ruined by a strange scoring system.

And Ren-chon salutes the school as they say goodbye for the summer.

Ren-chon has another sister? Hikage, huh? And from Tokyo? That's Hotaru town.
Seems Hikage is trying to play up her "city girl" credentials. And instantly starts seeing Hotaru as a rival. Kind of sad that she gets left behind, though.

Bringing juice on a train. Yup, that's high-tech alright.
"Bell pepper juice, mustard spinach juice, spinach juice?"
Oh Ren-chon you legend.

Natsumi wearing a T-shirt with "Heat Up" on it. What?

Confirming you're awake because your sister tugging your hair while you're asleep hurts?

And another new character - Honoka-chin. Ren-chon giving her a tour. A long walk to "something cool" turns out to lead to a watermill. I used to like them when I was little too.
The sound effects Ren-chon makes when taking a picture.

The blossoming of a new friendship, with exploration, and cats, and Gu. And photographs, of course.

They're so sweet together.

Then Ren-chon wakes up late. And runs over her sister in her panic. Or maybe she just ran over her anyway. But Honoka had had to leave the day before. The heartbreak of losing a friend, particularly without warning, is a sad and heartbreaking thing indeed - that scene was brilliantly done. They never got to see the waterfall. At least they get to keep in touch. And she's coming back next year.

And she sent Ren-chon's first ever photograph in her letter as well. The one with the camera pointing the wrong way, which nonetheless came out surprisingly well.

Time to watch it again.

Rewatching thoughts (yes it really isn't possible to get everything down in one go)- Love the way Ren-chon treats Honoka on their first meeting on the bridge. That defensive pose.

Is the Miyauchi family really smart? To go all the way to Tokyo for school must be quite something, and Ren-chon's grades are good (not to mention that she seems to make a lot of slightly precocious comments). And surely their sister can't be that stupid if she became a teacher, right? Right?

Also, Hikage's appearance reduces the age gap in the family to a somewhat less extreme extent. And it also means that we don't know who Renge was talking about with that car speech in the first episode. Although in fact from personality it seems much more like something Hikage would say than Kazuho. I wonder where their parents are...

Honoka sure takes pictures of some odd things. Then again so does Ren-chon.

Honoka seems like quite a reserved character. At least compared to anyone else in this series.

I wonder if either of the two new characters will show up much in the future.

As far as I can tell, this is the first time in the history of anime in which a watermelon
has been cut up into pieces using a knife and eaten normally.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it a few times before, though I can't name where off the top of my head. That said, this is the first time I've seen salt added to them, either in anime or anywhere else. Is doing that common?

Anyway, another brilliant, brilliant episode in this brilliant, brilliant series (one post isn't enough, one watch isn't enough, and so one use of the word "brilliant" isn't enough either).

Absolutely adorable and heartwrenching episode

This show is just way too brilliant

Next episode I'm guessing we're gonna see Hotarun try and show off to her senpai, but just cause Komari to feel bad because of her own not so developed body xD

Somehow I'm glad I didn't drop it earlier as this series develops nicelly.
Especially this episode with Renge overload was great, as she is.

But second part was best so far and it really had this Tamayura feel - no gags, just beautifull scenery, photos and sweet/relaxing short story.
Most certainly would like to see more of such segments. That zoom part was nice but than when I saw Renge's expression at the end I thought of Squealer of all the beings (have no idea why honestly).

BTW are there any predictions on how well it will do in sales?

She was so adorable. And when she learned that Honoka had to leave early.... must....hug >.<

As for her sister: Fake city girl got pwned by real city girl. Poor her. Still funny though.

Hika-nee killed me so much I bursted into laughter! :')

The rest of the ep was great. The long scene when Renge found out her friend is gone was sooo awkward because of its length, and I almost cried with Renge, because she tend to be so emotionless, and because I KNOW THIS FEEL SO WELL!

I really love this anime, damn. This is so relaxing. I really love countryside and summer atmosphere, and I can't get enough of the cicada's sound.

All my life I have eaten watermelon adding salt, supposedly it prevents stomach aches from eating too much, since where I live watermelons are not those round things portrayed in this anime:

Such a beautiful anime overall, I'm really enjoying this anime, even though 4 episodes aired of the series only. xD

So much Ren-chon this week <333

Poor Natsumi getting 4s and 5s out of 10.

When putting salt on the watermelon...
Natsumi: this is salty
Ren-chon: like life?

Honoka definitely gave me that Potte-vibe. Man I miss Tamayura so much :( Ren-chon and Honoka's friendship was really touching. Ren-chon always hangs out with older friends, I almost forgot she's only 7. And that scene when she learned her friend has left...so much feels T___________T Reminds me of my childhood *sniff*

It was also quite touching that the photo sent by Honoka was the one taken by Ren-chon (for the first time), and that it turned out to be a photo of them together.

As early as now, I'm demanding a season 2 <3
