Lines that make you laugh,or when someone totally rips and destroys the beat by being agressive.
also good story telling, good mixing makes the rap good.

The same thing that makes other songs good.

But holy shit, "otaku" in a rap song, no matter how great the beat or other lyrics are, will automatically be terrible.

Well it all depends on your audience, Rap is a lot more complicated than people make it seem. You're not guaranteed anything even if you have good lyrics. You'll have to work on your flow and delivery. Another thing that's important is beats, a lot people think its only lyrics but you have to have a good ear for beats.

I'll tell you right now, making hip-hop is very hard.

Being on time to the beat means sometimes writing your shit specifically to a beat you like and want to use. Then you have to flow all your bars together properly otherwise it's going to sound like shit.

Heres some good examples of how real MCs flow:

To get this to this level of flow, multi-syllables and content literally takes years of practice and adjustment.

I can't believe someone posted some Canibus on MAL, it's a good day. I've got a signed cd of his.

OT:
Considering you listen to Lil B and Tyler, I doubt you should be looking for tips from other people. Be as independent as they are if they're your idols. But please don't be that guy on YT rapping into a $5 mic over an already classic instrumental. Listen to the ATCQs, Pete Rocks, Canibus' and other trend setters over the generic Eminems for inspiration.
- Sincerely, a wigger that's probably in way over his head on this topic.

Hey.. just be yourself. It's your lyrics. Hip Hop was originally based on the principles of expression and creativity. In addition to that, it takes time to develop you're own style.

To me, a good rap is a song that means something to you and how it could relate to the people listening.

If you listen to a lot of instrumentals, you'll notice that usually the underlying beat is 4/4, so just listen to the basic rhythm and then you can start rhyming from there.

I feel like it really is a lot like writing music to a certain degree. You have to fit each line within those 4 beats, so utilizing rests, tempo, and enunciation in order to match the flow of the beat is important.

From a lyrical standpoint, a lot of writing techniques can make your raps sound good. Metaphors and similes are usually the things that generate that 'wow' factor when people are just kicking it freestyle, or the punchline in a song. Other than that, things like alliteration, assonance, consonance, and even slant rhyming can make your raps seem a lot more sophisticated. It also just makes it sound better in general. For reference, think of the first two lines of Nas' New York State of Mind.

I don't really think it's an issue of the actual music itself for me and I'm guessing for a lot of other people as well but the lyrical content. I'm not really interested in hearing about baby mama's, twerking, glocks, being in clubs etc. On the hand when I listen to someone like say Richie Branson who raps about anime and video games it becomes clear that that is the case at least with me. And while rap isn't really my cup of tea I generally find it alright when the subject matter is something I actual care about.

In my honest opinion, what makes a "rap" good is the lines that make you laugh, make you go "heh", or in the norm that Eminem does, that makes you feel a bit surprised inside. For me, it's just all about the emotion and the real shiz that is said in raps.

1) Rhythm and timing: dependent upon the actual time signature of the instrumental you are rapping over. I would recommend the syllable count per line to be a multiple of the time signature. So 4/4 time would be somewhere in the 12,16,20 syllable per line range.

2) Delivery: good microphone presence, meaning that you speak with conviction and clarity without sounding like you're trying too hard. You want charisma but not too much flair.

3) Flow: essentially tongue dexterity. Rappers use a technique that is often seen in brass instruments called "tonguing." Example of this would be to repeat the word "taco" as fast as you can, sounds easy but it's actually considerably difficult. You should at the very least be able to "double-tongue" with ease.

4) Content: having a message, incorporating a lot of wit, allusions, puns, complicated cadence, detailed imagery, excellent choice of vocabulary

various other things

Technically all music is based on principles of expression and creativity. Doesn't mean that writing a grindcore song about cute puppies is a good idea. Same goes for "otaku rap". It's stupid.

Good beats: Dr. Dre & Kanye
Good Lyrics: Talib Kweli & Eminem
Good Flow: Nas & Mos Def
Good Voice: Biggie & Lupe Fiasco

Avoid the new mainstream rap look at artists that have been around for a while and haven't changed (i.e. not Lil Wayne or Jay-Z's new stuff). Analyze what makes them great and work on it. Also don't talk about anime related shit in raps unless it's Dragon Ball Z otherwise you'll get laughed at.

I'm known by now to the people of M&E as a metalhead. It's in my blood, but I do listen to some of this rap, as it is called.

But a good rap song has to above all else for me, be fun to listen to.

And almost nothing is fun to me like this:
