Do you think Virtual Reality will be the next big thing.

Im sure many of you have already heard of Oculos rift, the latest, best, and cheapest VR headset out there. And people who have already tried it have already said its AMAZING. Especially since it has built in 3D that works flawlessly.

But do o you see it having a big future with games and other applications? Such as education?

By the way, its just a developer kit. They have said they will shrink the size, and make the screen higher quality in the consumer version. Regardless, its extremely light and comfortable despite its bulkiness.

A friend of mine said he went to the GDC around here. Tried and on and played some "typical pew pew fps (he didn't know the name)".

From what I know, it has 1:1 response. It goes where you look, and there's 0 latency. Props for that.

However, he said there was some "stick-thingy" for controlling... something, idk. I believe he means you still have to use default fps controls for turning, moving, etc. So head-turning is effectively pointless aside from niche applications (peeking).

So yeah. It's good. Until the next step takes it further.

As for the future; I think I'd put my money on holographic technology more than virtual reality. Virtual reality will mostly be used for recreation, whereas holographic applications are far-reaching.

I really don't think VR is ever going to be the next 'big' thing. It's been tried a billion times and it's never worked well enough to care about, and nowadays nobody is really interested in the concept. The occulus rift, even if it came out amazingly, would still be a very niche toy. It's a gimmick that already passed it's chance up to be the next big thing, just like 3D.

The only way virtual reality would actually be kind of cool is if you had one of those full 360 treadmills to move your character and a controller shaped as something relevant from the game for you to hold - thus full immersion in the game. But, while this is already doable, it costs tens of thousands of dollars and a big enough million dollar house to put it in, so it's just not an actual option.

The occulus rift is just another gimmick that will sell to a very small niche part of the gaming market and nothing else.

You barely wrote anything! And yes, the control and all that is the same - the occulus rift itself is just a visual aid. Literally everything else is the same, this is just there instead of the monitor, basically.

It's kinda cool, but that's literally all I can say about it. Kinda cool. Not worth more than 50 bucks, and not anything near the next 'big thing'.

It's just a 3D monitor with some head tracking tied to your face. That's literally all it is.

Not the next big thing, because we don't really have the technology for proper VR yet.

I don't think that Oculus Rift will be anything more than a gimmick that people will forget about in a few years. Sorta like how 3D movies have a resurgence every once in a while and then fade away once people remember how shit they are.

That sounds too immersive. Most people would prefer not to have much physical movement when playing games no?

Hmmm that quite a strong statement since none of us have even tried it or know what it feels like.

I personally will hold back on judging it because many people who have tried it before have said you dont know what its truly like until you actually wear it. Even people who tried and hated the virtual boy (which failed completely) loved it.

Its future is very uncertain for me because i think people are expecting too much from it.

It might be huge, it might not. That will be determined a few months after its released.

Not to mention that if competing companies enter this, then we would see massive progress in VR technology. Because competition is what really drives everything. (How else did we get to the moon? ha)

I don't understand what you're saying is a 'strong statement'.

It is factually and unarguably very literally just a 3D monitor with head tracking. Literally, that is A FACT. It's NOTHING MORE than that. The rest of what I said you could say is a "strong statement given you haven't used it" but this is quite literally what the device is. It's not opinion - it's factually what it is.

Even the official website says right there "Virtual Reality Headset for 3D Games".

It's not a strong statement to make having not used it - it's the official fucking explanation of what it is.

VR has been the next big thing for the last 20 years, always being superseded by some other big thing. I'd bet it's going to be the next big thing for a while yet.

The next big thing is not VR but the derivation from it, the Augmented Reality technology. It's already making a big hit in Japan, and I see a future prospect of it's application...

Silly, it's already a thread.

Anywho, I think it's a step up, but nothing much. You give far too much credit to the Oculus, while it is '3D' and does move depending where you turn your head it still is nowhere near as accurate as using a mouse for camera movement controls. Maybe for just single-player experience games, but for MP games like CS, Battlefield and such it just wouldn't make the cut. Nice piece of tech, but not super amazing.

Haha, i do hope so. But there could be such things that happened in the 'good' anime called SAO. People could easily hack it. Though i doubt that it would be life threatening. But i guess this would make bullying worse, though it would be an RPG.

As long as everything is better than that shi- *coughs* best anime ever, i would appreciate it. Though when that happens, i'm going to be an adult, and i would find that sort of weird.

As far as Oculus Rift level of VR, I don't think it'll get that big to be honest. I mean, I'm sure it'll get attention like kinect and things of that nature. However, whenever they perfect it to the point that you can immerse yourself completely and forget that you're playing a game, people will be quitting their jobs lol.

If it does, there are going to many horror stories of people playing and forgetting to eat/drink and dying while playing.

VR stuff hit a pretty big slump for a long time. It was a novelty in the 90s that many people were excited about. But that novelty quickly died out to the point that many looked upon the trend as a gimmicky, casual experiment.

Lucky, we're making headway into technology likely to make it feasible. There is a lot of backing and support behind the Oculus Rift. There is also the Google Glasses project. Michio Kaku argues that computers may soon exist in contact lenses. And beyond that, VR machines may be able to exist as brain implants as we approach the age of extreme nanotechnology and brain augmentation.

I do think that Virtual Reality will become a big thing soon. And because, the Oculus Rift is already making big industry waves.

I'm still waiting for the day our houses are equipped with holo-equipment so we can change the wall-decorations with a wave or a clap of our hands and stuff. Where my delicious holo-wall dammit... :<
