I'm looking for more that not only end, but leave you with a sense of either:
- WOW I didnt see that coming (Ex. School Days)
or
- That was F'ING AWSOME (Ex. Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop)

Again, end. Not continue in manga. And also not just an epic ending, but one that you never see coming. To relate to western media, the movie Lucky Number Slevin.

Any recs are appreciated :)

Code Geass' ending was totally unpredictable (just as the whole series).
I think Aria ~ the Origination was some kind of surprise too. You wouldn't expect that ending from the first two seasons, but if you're clever enough, you could suspect why this show is so high rated.
And I would also mention Great Teacher Onizuka, but you've already seen it.

No don't see Berserk for that because it doesn't really end there, it continues in the manga. The whole anime is just an introduction to the manga.

Well i really can't remember a lot of "never saw that coming" endings.
Except Code Geass that is already mentioned maybe Chrno Crusade and Darker than Black.

Haven't you seen the part that says and Not something that continues in the manga in the first post?

I have already seen Berserk, and yes though it was a total WTF ending, that one actually made me want to read the manga. Its been the only one besides Haruhi that has had that effect on me. Unless any other series have such an epic story by themselves, I would indeed like to stay away from any 'continues in the manga' types. (or moreso any 'you have to read the manga for the full effect' types)

I've been hesitant about Code Geass because it manages to combine my two most hated character styles, shounen and shojo...

See to it that you watch Excel Saga then. They really went over-board with the series' ending, I bet no one here saw it coming.

Defenite ending that you don't see coming... hmm...

Movies are probably your best bet on this one. I did something I rarely do, I looked at your list. -_- You've seen my first pick, Jin-Roh. lol

I'll add Perfect Blue andAkira for movies. Spirited Aaway might count too, I suppose.

As for series, try:
Last Exile
Paranoia Agent
RahXephon
Revolutionary Girl Utena (no, I don't suggest the movie. lol. I rarely do.)
Serial Experiments Lain

Not sure of the connection to manga on these, but they're good examples of twist-endings.

face slap endings are supposed to be just that.... a slap in the face, killing your expectations. Mai-HiME comes to mind, where in the end....

I am a banana.

Oh wow I forgot all about Akira, I saw that movie many years ago, forgot to put it on my list. Now I'm gonna have to watch it again, thanks :D

Those look like some good suggestions overall, although RahXephon is still the only series I have ever dropped. Can't stand characters with a negative score on the commonsense'o'meter, as well as that made up mysticism junk.

The middle was sweeter.

Lain was an anime that left me wondering what in the world happened at the end. Very strange.

The end of the Code Geass series. (2nd season) Be sure to watch the first one though, as it'll make no sense. I realize many people have brought it up already, but if you need an extra opinion in agreement, here it is. You won't be dissapointed.
