I did my first build last year. Using half new parts, and half parts from my old PC in a new case. It was much easier than I expected. Hardest part was plugging in the front panel stuff into the correct spots on a generic motherboard with no labels. Bit of trial and error. |

Im planning on getting this rig. Please tell me if there's anything wrong with it. CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 3.3 GHz MOBO: ASRock B75M-DGS RAM: G.Skill Value 4GB 1x4 DDR3 1333 CL9 HDD: Any 500GB SATA3 ODD: Any DVDRW PSU: FSP HEXA 500W ATX: EMAXX Rebel GPU: Sapphire HD 7770 1GB DDR5 It's not the best but it's fine for me. I would post a pic of my rig but you guys probably would not like it. How the hell do manage wires so easily mine has wires just everywhere and it gets dusty almost every day. I use zip ties to tie them down, but they are still bukly and block off area's to the fan, etc. I can't keep that damn thing clean ever. This room gets really dusty through especially since i have pets which makes it a bad environment for the computer. No matter what i do do this computer, now matter what kind of upgrades i give it, it always seems to run slow for some damn reason. I checked temps and they are fine. Specs are: ANTEC Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel Mid tower ATX. One of the best towers on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 I5 CPU 2.67 ghz 8GB of ram The mobo is a EVGA P55 SLI. The graphics card is a GTX 460 512MB. The PSU is a Corsair 650 WATT These parts are really not that old, i just upgraded it recently. I do alot of high intensive CPU and video tasks though, like running sony vegas, playing video games on the computer, lots of encoding, video capturing, photoshop, etc. Every time i try and do these tasks, i always have a damn problem with shut downs, computer turning off unsuspectingly, freezes, BSOD screens, even video output issues, etc. The whole reason why i decided to completely upgrade my pc was because of all these previous issues and the inability to run sony vegas and other high intensive software. I can just never manage to build a pc that can handle my tasks and operations. I actually created a topic here very recently about assistance on what to buy to build a pc and this is what i got, but apparently its still not strong enough to handle my needs lol. Sorry if this went a little off topic |

Yeah i see that, what bout the mobo, pretty decent i guess? Its not to outdated? Also i was thinking bout just taking everything out and putting it in another case, like maybe this one. I just recently build a computer for my family and this is the one they got, i love this case to death, you don't even need screws for the hard drives they just slip right via these clips and the wiremanaging you can put actually behind motherboard like you said. It also has a temp reading gauge on it, so yeah i might consider it and its a cheap case. Maybe thats my whole problem, you think? anyways here is the case i was taking bout http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144275 Its actually a slightly new one. I want a case looking like "s043uf" that thing is squeaky clean, he must like buffer and blow the hell out of it like every day. Hm, i've not heard it happening because of that. Would be more of a blame to the motherboard setup though. Example, 1 single card runs at x16, and 2 at 2x x8. but at 3 thats where you could possibly get stuttering as it has to do x8/x8/x4 (on a single CPU motherboard) |

Example, 1 single card runs at x16, and 2 at 2x x8. but at 3 thats where you could possibly get stuttering as it has to do x8/x8/x4 (on a single CPU motherboard) Did a little googling and it seems like it's not just one particular thing that causes it. It can be bad drivers, the game itself, or just the cards aren't ideal to be run in SLI/Crossfire. So I might hold off on buying another card, instead I'll just upgrade to a single card when the time comes. "but at 3 thats where you could possibly get stuttering" "...results show evidence of micro stuttering across two GPUs, but the problem substantially resolves itself when they add a third card." (link) I don't know, I'm just getting more confused. Seems like too much of a hassle to me. It depends, it could be link limitations causing the stuttering, again, it's dependant on the system. Add: this also says what i said about the PCI bus being the problem. "The general theory is that micro stuttering occurs because video cards are forced to share data across the relatively slow PCI-Express bus instead of between their own high-bandwidth connections." For my system! Ordering some nice Red LED's to put in the bottom half of the case, and i'm thinking about modding the side panel and taking out the intake grill (theirs no fan on it, cpu cooler is that big) and putting in plastic so i can look at my pretty system. |

On the topic of storage, i'm current planning out a new home server, initial idea is 3x3TB drives for data and 3x3TB for backups and a 64GB SSD for OS. Looking along the lines of minimal energy usage. so i'm going with an i3 T series and i've got a 700W 80+ Gold PSU for it. |

I know some people have cases with 3.5" external drive bays that connect through SATA, but you don't put actual external hard drives in there. (I still think the amount of people who actually need this feature because they have people bringing them full size HDDs all the time for whatever reason is incredibly small) Anyway point being that those aren't really bad, but if you're talking about the actual small externals using USB, they are blown away by traditional 3.5" drives connected to SATAII/III, and can't compare performance or stability wise. If you're talking about those giant clunky enclosed ones, I don't even understand the point if you have a desktop. |

If i was going to get any form of external drives they'd be eSATA's as you still get the speeds of using internal SATA. |

I guess you have a point, but bigger hard drives do tend to fail more often, and having them externally makes them easier to replace. That said you do have a point, and it's probably something that you could manage either way depending on your goals. |
