http://mal.oko.im sorts series consisting of at least two titles as franchises (e.g. Slayers, Slayers Try, Slayers Next, Slayers Revolution, etc. are all in the same franchise); why doesn't MAL do the same? It would look nicer on the list, especially for those anime where every season is counted separately, or ones with specials, OVAs, ONAs etc.

Well most of the time they do unless it has a different name than the original series. Which means that to order them by that you have to break the alphabetical order that is already on it.

Every ONA/OVA/special/movie ever has a different name; plus those series where every season is counted separately. No way sequels with the same name are the majority.

What alphabetical order? Not all sequels are next to each other alphabetically (e.g Neon Genesis Evangelion and Evangelion 1.0); i don't understand what you're trying to say, but grouping both NGE and the Eva movies as 'Evangelion' would actually fix the alphabetical order.

I don't mean exactly the same name. But like how you have Maria sama ga Miteru on your list and the second season is just Maria sama ga Miteru: Haru, and etc so most of them are near each other.
And I think most of them are connected by their title. So I don't see the need.

I'm talking about the default alphabetical order that the lists load in.

The need is a) For making Maria-sama take just one spot instead of 8
b) For sticking the series that aren't next to each other alphabetically
And the series are already grouped together on their pages, the algorithm for detecting that is there, i don't understand why they didn't do this already; am i the only one that finds it annoying that series like marimite take 8 spots, yet there are 100+ episode series that count as 1?

You mean the 'Related Anime' in the entry page? It's imperfect since you'd have to scroll back to several prequels/pages before getting the actual anime's beginning (e.g. Ikkitousen: Shuugaku Toushi Keppuuroku). I'd like MAL to implement a sort of timetable (with side story) in the anime's main page. This would be helpful for those who want to see a story unfold sequentially. Ex. are the Gundam, Macross, Slayers series. A date shown for the series would also be helpful - you'd know that Fate/Stay Night came before Fate/Zero. This would be cleaner looking in a tab of its own.

I'm not so certain of implementing this in the personal list. Would it be a dropdown? a popup? And since grouping them this way would mean that some titles in your list would not be in alphabetical order, it would be troublesome to keep clicking or hovering on your list to find the anime you are looking for (e.g. Bubblegum Crisis series which has Hurricane and AD Police).

Yes; it would be nice if all "Related Anime" would be grouped together in users' anime list.

That would indeed be useful, but what should be the "anime's main page"? The timetable should be on the page of every anime in the series. Alternatively, they could make separate pages for each franchise, but both would take a lot of time to do.

Perhaps make it something like "Slayers [+]" and when you click the [+] button, it expands with every Slayers you've watched. There should also be a "Expand all" button.

Grouping related anime is problematic. Would MAL group Umineko with Higurashi? Nanoha with that OVA series she briefly appeared in (I think). Detective Conan with Magic Kaito? Slayers with Lost Universe? Aquarion with Aquarion EVOL?

Slayers - Lost Universe are not considered to be related by MAL, but the others are. Personally i don't see the problem; they're still part of the same franchise, and closely related to each other.

mal graph does this
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong
