I'll admit most of the black metal out there is bad, just like the bulk of every genre of music is shit.

Once you find one good band though it only becomes easier to keep finding more.

Well do you know of any black metal bands that produce intellectually stimulating, thought provoking music? If not that's fine, as long as it doesn't sound like crap and the band members dress like faggoths.

Mastodon is about as heavy as I get (I know they're not death, but whatever). Also just because something isn't intellectually stimulating or though provoking doesn't mean anything. Some music is just about a feeling.

Most good black metal seeks to invoke emotion rather than intense thought, with vocals you often can't understand anyways because that isn't the point. It's all about atmosphere.

That said, the most intellectual black metal band I know of would be Deathspell Omega but they can be a little stereotypical at times. They aren't a group I would recommend to someone new to the genre.

Here's something I would.

If no one would bother, I'd also like recommendations.
I like Agalloch, Burzum, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Ulver
I'd like vocals that are at least intelligible, an Opeth/POS like band would be a plus (I really need more Opeth btw), I also love POS' Be and Remedy Lane, and Ulver's Shados of the Sun
- last.fm account on siggy

EDIT: did some searching, and found this -- this is exactly what I'm looking for, an Opeth-like sounding band

Give Anathema a shot.

Also one of Dan Swanö's several bands, Nightingale:

These are not death or black metal though. Same with Opeth - they have death metal elements such as growled vocals, but ultimately fall into a separate sub-genre. Just out of curiosity as I haven't kept up with them for a long time now, but what of Opeth have you heard? The song you put in your edit is nothing like what I'm familiar with. Try 'April Ethereal' (the song by Opeth, not the band) and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the recommendations, just what I'm was looking for, I just love the prog metal and doom metal sound

I've heard every album by Opeth, for the purpose of the background, here's how I rank the studio albums according to preference:
1 - Damnation
2 - Still Life
3 - Blackwater Park
4 - Morningrise
5 - Ghost Reveries
6 - Watershed
7 - My Arms, Your Hearse
8 - Orchid
9 - Deliverance
10 - Heritage
Don't get me wrong, I picked Damnation as 1st not because it was devoid of death growls but because it was so damn beautiful, and I placed Heritage at the last because I find it quite boring. (maybe you'll be able to make more recommendations out of the rankings).
btw, I also like Riverside and Katatonia (considerably less).

Amazing band there man, now that's what real music is like. Marius Strand doesn't care how well it sells, or how many views his videos get. He just makes music because he loves it.

I'm very pleasantly surprised to see another fan here.

EDIT: I had no clue his second album was released last month, thanks.

I really, really love Blut Aus Nord for all of their discordant weirdness and experimentation. As far as black metal goes that's all I've been listening to lately.

edit:

I lied. I've also been listening to Weakling, Leviathan, Xasthur, Wolves In The Throne Room, and Velvet Cacoon. I like USBM.

I listen to it all the times.

An Autumn for crippled children(A blackgaze band) also recently released a new EP.

Hearts of Light | Blossoms

Within only 5 months of their last album, i'd say its my favourite EP of 2013(so far).

Xanthochroid often reminds me of a symphonic black Opeth, they kind of have the same transition style.
Gonna throw Emmeleya out there too.

I would also like to say that the rest albums from An Autumn for cripples children are really worth it(especially the ones from 2012 and 2011).

The first album(from 2010) is closer to black metal, but the last 3 are blackgaze, or to put in less simple terms. Its Experimental atmospheric post-rock/shoegaze mixed with depressive black metal and doom metal.

Personally, I consider them to be my favourite band from the Netherlands.

I used to play in a metal band called Wretched. Here is our single that was on headbangers ball on MTV2 for a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkLX-5HdhVs

Here is our most popular song. Our instrumental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtKgveqZFlw

When I was playing with them I had no idea our second album Beyond The Gate was loosely based on Fullmetal Alchemist. I hadn't watched any anime at the time. However, once I watched the series I noticed a few things. I went over our lyrics and asked Billy (the vocalist) and he confirmed it! I was pretty surprised. Not a lot of our fans know about this. Shit, the band didn't really know it either.

As for metal I like bands like From Graves of Valor (listen to the EP Famine. It is soooo damn good.) Black Dahlia, Between the Buried and Me, Within the Ruins, Havok, and stuff like that. I was always more into punk rock like NOFX, The Misfits, Bad Religion, Swinging Utters, ect.

I listen to some death metal and quite a bit of melodic death metal, I could never personally get into black metal though.

Death metal: Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, The Faceless, Job For A Cowboy, Opeth

Melodeath: In Flames (old and new), Dark Tranquility, Scar Symmetry, The Haunted, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amon Amarth, Darkest Hour, Soilwork (old and new), Sonic Syndicate

From time to time, mostly depending on my mood, I'll listen to some form of death metal or for a more mellow vibe some atmospheric black metal.

Some of my favorite bands include Vader, Gojira, Spectral Lore, Be'Lakor, Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, ÆTHER REALM, Avatar, and Omnium Gatherum.

The best Black Metal band by far is Bathory. I also like Sarcofago, and Sabbat a lot. I find the Norwegian scene with artists like Darkthrone and Immortal to be very boring and overrated. Honestly I think a lot of power electronic and industrial music artists did dark and scary much better than Black Metal did.

You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Damn, that's awesome! Have you played any venues in the Albany, New York area? I've seen Job For A Cowboy at the Upstate Concert Hall and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center along with Cannibal Corpse at last summer's Mayhem Fest so I kinda wonder if I've ever seen your band/any band you were in by chance haha

Death/deathcore
Rings of Saturn is the coolerest band ever created. RoS is so godly and cooler than any of the n00bcore stuff that you listen to...duuuuuhhhhhh.

But seriously, their guitars are pretty good...and thats about it.
Acrania is good with some nice political/social commentary in their lyrics.
Celtic Frost is early black/death and they're good too (though I've only heard To Mega Therion)
Meshuggah for some nice extreme metal too.
IMO Cannibal Corpse is overrated.
