So my boyfriend just got a new Samsung 1080p 250htz 55in LED, and it has a USB port so I can plug my external in. We were wanting to watch anime from my external on the TV but when I plug it in and we use the TV's media player it wants to add its own subtitles to things that have already been subbed? Awesome subtitles turn into white tiny subtitles with lots of lag..

Does anyone know how to fix this or get around this issue? Is there a way I can choose which subtitles the TV uses for my external files? Thanks so much for any advice!! :)

EDIT--------> I've run into another problem, where do I find .srt files?? if I can put them into the same folder as the series apparently it will fix my problem

Those devices don't support stylized subtitles, since they aren't a standard format.

^This. Unless you get rid of the soft subtitles and make them hard.

OKAY! So I've found a kind of/sort of solution, aparently I need to put the .srt files in the same file folder as the series and give it the same prefix as the folder, that way the TV will recognize the actual Subtitles instead of giving it new subtitles.

But I've run into another problem, where do I find these .srt files?? and do I need to have a .srt file for each episode? if so where do I find these?

Thanks again for anyone whos tried to answer<33

The best way to get proper subtitles is to input the name of the file you want subtitles for into google (IE, if you downloaded an episode of Dakara boku, the file name would be "[SubDESU] Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai. - 09 (1280x720 x264 AAC).mkv" and you would google that with the word "subtitles".

Then, you just make sure the subtitles are in srt format, and that their file name is the same as the video file they belong to.

IE, using the previous example the subtitles should be titled "[SubDESU] Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai. - 09 (1280x720 x264 AAC).srt"

Then they should work.

This, as far as I know. They only use .SRT which is pretty bad, except for watching TV series (like american ones, subtitled).

Go with the laptop hooked with an HDMI cable so that you see it on the TV screen. But you can't use that laptop when doing so =)

EDIT: Otherwise, you'll have to reencode MKV into MP4 hardsub :D

As said above, it depends on the video format
Normally, TV won't play mkv (the most commonly downloaded format)
The easiest and long-going way is to plug a pc or laptop to the tv with HDMI
Play it on pc, show it on tv

Hard sub / re-encoding 1 or 2 occasionally is okay but too many waste time & money...

Alternatively, you may try to extract the subtitle file from mkv (mkv extract)

Then, Convert it to srt format.
Never did that myself. There may be more than 1 subtitle formats. You can search videohelp.com for the proper software.

You could download mkvmerge (I think it has mkvextract dont remember) and extract the subs with that but I don't know about converting them.

For stylized subs use Handbrake to hard sub the stylized subs. This way you can watch anime with stylized subs on what ever device you want.
https://sites.google.com/site/taumox/handbrake-tutorial

If you still want SRT subtitles then you can use subtitle edit to convert subs to srt. This program is pretty simple drop in the mkv file, after a few seconds it loads the subs, then you can click file and then click save as subrib and you got your SRT files.
http://www.nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit

You should be aware that if a anime has a lot of English signs over building signs, street signs, class signs and other signs that they will be jumbled in with the dialogue subs when you convert stylized subs.So if a there sub sign that says "Class 3-1" directly over the class room sign that appears 3 minutes and 51.5 seconds into the anime then what ever dialogue that is at 3 minutes and 51.5 seconds will have Class 3-1 jumbled in,over or under the dialogue subs.So you may have to manually remove all sub signs so that the only subs shown are dialogue subs.

I've never used this before, I have alot of anime...can I do this in bulk?

I'm just trying to figure out the best and most efficient way I can make all of my anime compatible with the TV without losing the quality of my subs; and using my laptop as a middle man...just makes the USB port on the TV kind of useless for me...and thats so sad ;A; js

The best and most efficient way is to just plug your laptop into the TV.

If you use handbrake to re-encode the videos it will lower the quality and take a very long time, depending on how fast your processor is.

If you insist on using your TV's media player...

1. Get the subtitles by using MKVExtractGUI. Be careful in renaming since it will extract 'Track 1.' You'll have tons of 'Track 1' if you don't rename.
2. Determine if the subs extracted are .srt or .ssa, .sub, etc. If .srt, rename to episode title and you're good to go.
3. If another type, use Subtitle Workshop to convert the subs.

BTW, I saw this page, it may or may not be related to your case.

Hope this helps.

You can do bulk. But you must make sure the anime has the same video dimensions and is in the same folder when you do bulk. For example all the anime that are 720x480 should be in its own folder and anime that are 1280x720 in its own folder,640x480 in its own folder and so on. It is also a good idea to check the converted files due to the fact handbrake does automatic cropping, which can sometimes jumble subs that are longer than two lines together.Automatic cropping is a bad thing because I believe the .ass and .ssa subs configured for a certain video dimension size.So if you have to redo a anime make sure the top, left, right and bottom cropping settings are set to 0.

Depending on the settings you choose, how many episodes you do and how fast your processor this may be something you want your computer doing while you are asleep,at work or at school.
