Gah, I know many have discussed and argued vehemently about which anime adaptation of Hunter x Hunter is better than the other but is there anyone out there who feels absolutely torn between the two?

I constantly feel like I'm in some sort of tug-of-war especially whenever I see arguments claiming that one adaptation is "clearly superior" than the other for such and such reasons.

IN MY EYES, both have their respective flaws that keep either adaption from being better than the other, at least at this point in time...

(To be honest, I'm actually hoping for the day when the remake will surpass everyone's expectations and become better than the 1999 version.)

*sigh*

Discuss whether you are torn between the two adaptions and why. For clarification's sake, you may discuss your own pros and cons of each series in order to support your answer.

...And if you aren't feeling torn and you have a clear answer in your mind, discuss specific moments when you felt your preferred adaptation was surpassed by the other in some way and why. (I'm not asking you to defend your preferred adaptation, I'm just wondering if you were able to appreciate the other adaptation at one point without criticizing it.)

Let's just be rational about this okay?

I think that after the new series has surpassed the first in terms of episodes, you know after a couple of arcs, people will like the new series a lot more. There is not really anything that bothered me in the new series, the music is a little different. I love the quality of the art in the new series. The voice actors changed which was just inevitable since the first series aired over 10 years ago. I have heard that Greed Island started to move away from the manga, and that the new series is much closer which is never a bad thing. The only thing that was missing from the old series was a continuation of the story. Which the remake is going to give us. I think people are constantly trying to find ways to prove that one series is better than the other, when you should just enjoy both for what they give you.

Me personally i like Faithful adaptations. At first i didn't much like the 2011. I started watching it when there was 10 episodes out. The reason why the 2011 was bothering me because it didn't show Kaito. After that i was blinding myself and saying the 1999 was better because of it. Once i got like 4 episodes in I started knowing the big differences between both adaptations. The 2011 went straight in and got to the point, just how i felt with the manga. The 1999 took the liberties to go more in depth on the characters but that was the main reason why the 1999 series bothered me.
To me it felt like MH respected the manga more than Furshashi in the 1999. The manga is perfect in and of itself IMO. I didn't feel comfortable with the changes i saw in the 1999 and i felt like the director took Togashi's work and made it his own.

The only thing i really like from the 1999 is the York shin arc. I thought the cast was great, the execution in most scenes was fun to watch. It actually gave me doubts that the 2011 may not top it, but basing off the previous episodes it seems like 2011 has a chance to be even better.
I would like to point out that the 1999 Yorkshin did change how some scenes were handled compared to the manga, but overall it didn't bother me much because it was pretty close the source material.

I like the manga anyways,so which ever one executes the manga better is the one I'm gonna choose.

Thought the art is good but i checked the old ones and the old ones are more realistic. THe new one is so colorful. and gon and killua's arm legs are so long. some story parts are different and cut off too. not sure if it was a filler or not though.

not really "torn"... I like both, at this point I can't say I prefer one over the other. (unless you throw in the manga to the mix xD) Mainly because I largely judge the 1999 with the (amazing) Yorkshin arc, and the 2011 has barely started with that xP
1999 art resembles YYH, so I like it, but it doesn't feel like I'm watching HxH at times because of that. Also was very disappointed the first time I watched the part when Killua was introduced. ;_; Love how it started though, even though I prefer how it was handled in the manga, this adaptation made me love Mito (and Neon.)
2011 art resembles Togashi's while at the same time looking very different, but it's being pretty consistent so far so I'm okay with it. I really didn't care about the missing Kite scene when I was watching it, but the more I read on forums and the more I thought about it, I started wishing MH put it all in where it should be. xP Don't care much for the added Kurapika/Mizuken scenes though. :/ And don't care for how it started much (again, I prefer the manga's start.) But I love MH just for animating Satotz's lovely walk properly. ;v;

I like minor changes/etc in anime adaptations (unless they rub me the wrong way) so filler or skewed character perceptions don't bother me as much as some.
It's just that I'll probably always prefer the manga, cuz I liek togadshi

I like them both and watch them both.

HxH is really the only anime that I'm looking forward to watching now, other manga-animes are going through shitty arcs/bad animation phases
and seasonal anime are not interesting and SAO is starting to go down.

I rewatch the old annime sometime to compare and stuff though, still awesome no matter how many times :P

Seriously, I don't understand why 2011 gave us 2 episodes of recap fillers. Why can't they remove those recaps from their plan and include kaito part from the starting of the story just like in manga? :( I hope they will surprise me with how kaito will appear in 2011.

Agreed with you. New one is too colorful..I like quite a number of character designs in 1999 than 2011. Preferred some 1999 voice actors than 2011, especially Shalnark voice.. Really don't like his voice in 2011.

But then, 2011 follow manga closer than 1999...that alone is 1 big good point. So I like both adaption, both has flaws & good points..

I also love both versions. I really wish they used the old OST for the 2001 series.

I see a lot of people are finding the new soundtrack lacking compared to the first one. They were both animated by different companies wouldn't there be a legal problem if they tried to use the other soundtrack and or have to pay a lot of money?

* Art/Graphics/Effects - 2011
I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND why some people prefer the 99 graphics over the new one. Nen overall looks better, colors are much better (and loyal to the original concept art), and the shading is insane especially on Hisoka and Killua. Many say that the 99 version is more realistic, but I say anime should look like anime. The art style is much cleaner on the 2011 version it's a feast for the eyes.

* Plot/Pacing/Themes - Tie
2011 is loyal to the manga's pace, and I'm OK with that. 99 made some roundabout fillers, but I'm also OK with that. As long as both of them follow the manga, it's all good. Although I admit that some removed plot in the '99 anime bothered me, such as (and especially) the Kastro fight; I didn't care about the omitted sushi contest in the new version :P. And as for the violence, 2011 started censored but is picking up, and might even surpass 99 in this respect. Everyone might hate 2011 for the Killua-Johness scene, but Uvogin just ate Hiru's friggin' head off; what can be more violent than that? I have faith that Madhouse will show us better eps in the future.

* Voice Acting - Tie
Normally, voice acting is something one just has to get used to. I have favorites in 99 and 11, and there are no problems overall, except for a few that I don't like (99's Feitan and 11's Shalnark). Like I said, something that I can get used to.

* Music - 1999
2011 has decent soundtracks (Zoldyck Family, Galneryus's Hunting For Your Dream, etc), but 1999 just has gems irreplaceable to my heart. Densetsu is true to its name; an eternal legend, and one of my favorite OSTs of all time. There's also Ohayou and a lot more. Most of 11's soundtracks are happy and energetic, which suits a shonen anime just fine, but Madhouse has to consider that HxH's gonna be darker from now on, and shonen music might not be enough.

Overall, I prefer the 2011 version just because it will continue until the latest arc (hopefully), but I don't really feel "torn" per se, because Hunter x Hunter is Hunter x Hunter; it's basically the same :)

They both exist, they both are amazing, I'm glad I got to enjoy the same anime, twice in 2 different ways.

While many animes with one adaptation fail to entertain me 0.1 as much as either version of HxH has.

But 2011 has the advantage in pacing, animation, art style, violence, action.

1999: Music, art work and detail, some themes/color palettes (Kukuroo mountain looks amazing), music, good fillers.

They both have a unique feel that good in both of them.

So far HxH 1999 is a 10, and the 2011 is a 9 but might change later for better or worse

Thanks for the videos. Very cool. The fights, so far, have been more dynamic in the 2011 version.
