To preface, this feature is totally unnecessary, but it would be cool none the less.

The idea is to have a feature that would calculate what percentage of manga in our list is from each genre. For example:

Your list is:
80% shoujo
25% fantasy
20% horror
15% seinen
2% cars
etc etc

This could possibly be a link right below the list stats on our profile page (the blue bars that show reading, on hold, etc) that says "Username's Genre Percentages" or something like that.

***

I got the idea for this because I was curious about how the genres stacked up in my own list. I read a lot of shoujo, but I read a lot of other things too. But since I am past the 200 entry mark, the idea of figuring it out myself seems a bit daunting D:

I understand completely, though, if this idea is a bit extraneous. X3

I think certain features have been disabled because of the pressure they were putting on the server. I'm pretty sure something like this one could do the same, so it's unlikely we get something like this. Though I admit it would surely be interesting to know.

It's an interesting idea, and something that is indeed possible, but I'll have to look in to it and see what kind of stress it throws on the database server.

I imagine that, once calculated, the percentages of all the genres wouldn't change much anymore. So maybe it's not necessary to have it calculated every hour/... .

Turns out it isn't that hard to calculate, and not very intensive on the server. Now i just need to figure out how to display it on the profile.

Here's yours Scrum. These stats have dropped/plan to read removed too.

ScummYummy Manga Genre Percentages:
Romance 14.4%
Comedy 12.9%
Drama 11.7%

That's an interesting idea, I'd like to see it also!

And about displaying it, one quick idea could be to show it under both anime/manga stats, working somehow like the shared anime/manga, show the 3 highest % with a link show all.

Awesome! Thanks! Excluding dropped/planned to read is a good idea.

Wow, shounen beat out shounen-ai on my list. XD Didn't expect that to happen :D

I think you could put it right under the "Anime Stats" and "Manga Stats." It would be the perfect place. Or under the "random anime" and "random manga" lists in the profile.

But instead of displaying it all, maybe have like the top three percentages shown and then a "show all" button which shows the rest? And instead of simply listing it down, just have it written right next to each other separated by a semi-colon or comma.

(Romance 14.4%, Comedy 12.9%, Drama 11.7%... show all).

Hmm...I still think there's a better way, but maybe someone could work off of this suggestion.

why not do like you had the Tag cloud and make it so only the top display first but if a person wants to see more they can press the "more" link underneath? This would then do your little javascript scroll down effect and show the rest.

Yes, please. Looks like interest was already caught and a lot of suggestions in the thread would help with the details.

I'm sure this would make me more aware if my entries are properly tagged with genres or not, so that would help the database. ;-p

Add 'Favourite Genres' to user profile details based on the frequency of appearance of said genres on shows the user listed and the subsequent rating they gave those shows.

like:

Mod edit: Please give your threads more descriptive titles. Also, since this is a site suggestion, this has been moved to the suggestions sub-forum.

Before in the old layout, you had something like tags in your profile sidebar, so ye that showed most of your shows you watched, meaning = fav genre.
i dont think you have that now.

Why dont you just say under your profile description the shows you like most?

Hopefully given more importance for genres.

Actually I really do think the genres are underused in the database... they're pretty much only used on the anime/manga pages and the search page. It would at least be nice to see them on the top anime pages and such -- then you could check out top mecha or top romance etc, though I guess you can always do a search and then sort by rating. :-/

It would be kinda handy to have a tag cloud or something on profiles. Those who are handy with scripting can write their own. I know Mathes already was working on something like this, and generating stats from list data isn't that difficult if you understand php. The API kinda died in the water, but you can get your list info from the malappinfo xml and parse that using your programming language of choice to make stats. Be sure to properly save/cache to avoid needless strain on the database servers.

I'm assuming Xinil was just adding all of them together and averaging based on the number of genre tags rather than the number of shows. creating something more accurate would be significantly more difficult and time consuming. though not doing it means that someone who has seen tons of romantic comedies and lots of dramas, but hates romantic dramas would probably appear to love romantic dramas since their top 3 genres would be romance, comedy and drama, but I doubt this situation would come up much.

as for how to display it, a chart would be nice. but failing that, the top 3 thing would work. and I think it should probably be updated after with every 3rd or 4th new series added to the list, this would keep it relatively up to date and avoid the massive strain of everyone's statistics being updated at the same time.

why was this never implemented btw? is it the same reason that the tag cloud got disabled?

If you wanted to get accurate user-based tag cloud, you could additionally weight those genre results by score ... instead of totaling the number of shows on your list in the genre, you could take the list of shows that you have scored in the genre and total the scores. This would weight each genre by the scores you gave the shows in that genre. You could either ignore the unscored shows, or give them an average score.

oh hmm... didn't realize. They should be brought back, and better utilized in general... I think that's what I was trying to get at in my post however many months ago. I'm also tired of features being removed because the "database servers can't handle it" instead of finding a scalable solution.

I think people would like them around, even if they're cached for a week or more at a time. They don't need to show up right on the profile page either... they could just be shoveled to the statistics tab, or replaced there with some kind of percentage histogram like the first post suggested.

I think the biggest issue is just those people that have massive lists. Single queries end up taking too long and slowing legitimate queries that are waiting in the queue. Better caching and optimization should be able to solve this without extra hardware though....

Not sure if it's already been suggested, but what about the idea of adding some sort of way to read the statistics of the amount of each genre you've watched?

I'm not sure if charts of any kind are viable for the server, although it might be possible to try something along these lines:

Slice-Of-Life: 12%
Comedy: 17%
Shounen: 9%
Sports: 3%
...

And so on.

It would probably be easier if it was implemented, to limit the statistics (if they are in an ascending list) to stating the top three or four genres of a user.

It would probably fit best (if it would be a chart or graph) as another page/tab on a user's Anime/Manga Lists or on the left side of a Profile (if it would be a list), under all of the Favorite Characters, Favorite Anime, etc.

I can already imagine the amount of load it would produce to the server trying to generate hundred thousands of statistics for hundred thousands users. Considering mass messaging, among other things, have already been disabled due to huge server load, I don't see this implemented in the near future.

As most titles are categorised by multiple genres or themes, I don't see how it can prove that useful to anyone as one might be watching lots of slice of life, but not necessarily meaning one likes that particular category.

Indeed.

If we went by the suggestion, the statistics would add up to over 100% which makes the use somewhat redundant and pointless.
