A couple of months ago I discovered Chatango. It seems to be fairly popular among anime fans and role-playing communities and I got curious about its success as to me it looks inferior to other already established chats (IRC being the most famous).

I asked some users why they choose Chatango, but none could give me a reason (they just joined a group that was already using it) so, as various MAL clubs and members use it, I decided to ask it here.

Why do you prefer Chantango? What made you choose it?
(My guess would be better marketing, but maybe it has features valued by non tech-savvy people?)

Indeed.

That's what's considered pretty? Different tastes I guess.

I think the fact that you can't use a serious client and that you must have flash installed make it harder to use than, say, XMPP or IRC.
This isn't the first time I hear the "it's easier" argument, but no one ever told me what makes it easier than the others.

Yeah, if you join a group that's already using it you can't pretend they switch to something else.

You can do that in pretty much every forum or chat though.

Installing flash is hard? Most of the websites use it anyways and when you install a new browser you basically are forced to get all of those plugins. Just click wait and you're done. You aren't prompted to use XMPP whatever that is and IRC. IRC has a steeper learning curve because you need to learn the joining commands and typing in things correctly. Furthermore, BECAUSE people are using it, that's what they end up using. Why change to another client when they found people they can talk to already? Finally, people just need to chat/roleplay. Why bother going through the learning curve to do it?

It is not on Windows. On Mac I have no idea. On every other system the support is subpar or non-existent.
Not to mention all its other problems, it's not like Adobe plans to discontinue it for no reason...

That's news to me. If the HTML5 version of YouTube were mature enough I could stop using Flash (I'd miss a porn site, but nothing more).

Yeah, those whole five minutes needed to understand how IRC works are too much, but fear not! You can just click and chat from your browser with IRC too (or XMPP).

The learning curve is almost flat and you get: customization, tab completion, highlight, spell check, a decent log, bigger userbase, the possibility to connect from everywhere, etc.

I don't claim those systems are perfect and I know IRC usage is declining and XMPP isn't common for public chatrooms, but it baffles me how something like Chatango is thought to be better.

I find it like another spam/ad...being a nuisance to my anime viewing.

But I love how it has the X button, so it closes and remembers the setting next time your here. :)

I do not like flash...I prefer RumbleTalk.
It is HTML5 chat that one can add images and videos in the chat.

Chatango was the first one I came across, so i just joined and still check my account regularly. I assume there are others that are better, but I'm used to Chatango so I'm going to stick with it for now.

I've never even heard of this, so besides it being a simple chatroom-esque, what exactly is it?

It's easy to use, and it is used by many sites that stream anime. It's a little annoying because you see what people are talking about while you're watching, and you can't help but pause the video when the discussion gets interesting.

Its simple it does all that i need from a chat. The ability to chat to random strangers, maby post a pic or a vid right there next to my anime. I couldnt give a crap about customisation or any additional features.

Does it really matter what online IM protocol is used?

IRC for one can indeed be convenient and easy to use, but it is quite outdated..
Not to mention it's easy to track who you are unless the server specifically hides IP's.

Well despite IRC's upsides and downsides, I'd guess people prefer Chatango because it's quite idiot proof, and isn't really that inferior to other protocols when it comes to simple messaging..

Im not a big fan of the website and think some of the users are pathetic. P.S. beware of all the attention you get from random strangers if you put up a sexy picture of yourself. -__-

Nothing more than that.

I started caring when I realized I was using MSN, AIM and Skype despite not liking any of them, plus IRC. I thought that was stupid and looked into why it was that way. Of course others are free not to care about it/do what they want.

Don't they all do it nowadays?

Not sure what you are replying to, but I think the core of the anime community is still on Rizon.

The answer seems to be that many people just use the first thing they come across and the fact that Chatango is used in some anime streaming sites explains its popularity among the community. Did I get it right?
