I've read about it and it does sound slightly similar to Perfect Blue in certain aspects.

Darren Aronofsky, who directed Black Swan, bought the rights to Perfect Blue when he was making Requiem for a Dream, basically so he could lift the scene of Mima screaming under water straight to his own film, which he did.

I guess he wanted his money's worth because the similarities are staggering between Perfect Blue and Black Swan, so much so that I knew what the twists were and when they would happen.

Black Swan was good, and it had different elements and details to tell a similar story, I just wish he had given more acknowledgement to Perfect Blue and Satoshi Kon, either as inspiration, source material or rip off.

Also this.

Now, what does "American filming rights" actually mean?

Yes but Black Swan was horrible, over rated, and 70% of it's viewers were fan boys who heard about "that one scene." It's like Perfect Blue with bits of Princess Tutu thrown in to create an overly dramatic eye sore.
Perfect Blue - Brilliant
Swan Lake - Excellent
Black Swan - Terrible

This topic reminds me of what Sato Dai, the storywriter of Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eureka Seven and Wolf's Rain said at the academic conference held at Komazawa University in July 2010, discussing why guys like him get no work, even as...

“Hollywood rips off our ideas.”
Sato Dai [佐藤 大]

What is most impressive is how Aronofsky even bought the rights to remake Perfect Blue and he still denies that PB had any influence in Black Swan, that there are just "similarities"...

Haha immediately as the dissociative personality parts started Black Swan came to mind.

The creator of Black Swan purchased the rights to remake Perfect Blue, so there you have it Black Swan is a Perfect Blue remake.

Even without the lesbian sex scene in Black Swan, it was still an incredible feat for Natalie Portman, and I personally enjoy watching it over and over. Amazing directing and cinematography from Aronofsky's staff. He's a great film maker.

Yeah, he loves that tub scene in Perfect Blue which is why he bought the rights. In Requiem for a Dream he also used it for Jennifer Connelly, just to show her anguish in dealing with withdrawl.

Aronofsky is one of the better directors in this decade, and there aren't too many who can match his level when dealing with Psychological Thrillers.
