Would you find it weird if someone older than you (25+) watched anime?

Personally, I don't really think it's weird although I can't really picture people older than 25 years enjoy watching anime with their free time.

One of my friend's younger sister has a teacher who watches anime. Now, anime has a broad variety of genres but I can't help thinking that most people will focus on something more cute, which I definitely think gives off a bad vibe if you are a teacher if you know what I mean.

Now, yeah of course the people who make anime shows are usually in their mid-30s and up but I sort of think of that as a different demographic. I am just talking about a casual everyday working/non-working person in their late 20s and up.

I would really like to hear from someone who is older than 25 about this subject.

No, I wouldn't think it's weird. Of course, I don't have any 25+ older friends, kind of hard since I'm 36 :) Usually you're looked down upon by the general public when it's found out that you are older and still into "cartoons", but I personally couldn't care less about random peoples' opinions. If I like something, I like it. If someone else has a problem with it, well, too bad for them lol. After flipping the channels on Comcast, I see 300 channels with nothing on. I find it a lot easier to find anime that intrigues me, which is why I'm still a fan at my age.

I'm also a fan enough that I collected several PVC figures, made a few animated themes for my Blackberry, all my computers cycle anime themed wallpaper and I built a spacious file server for collecting fansubs. I also enjoy Japanese gaming; those pick-a-path kinds of games. I just wish I knew Japanese so I could play the ones that haven't been translated.

This makes me sound like an otaku/geek/NEET type of person but I'm actually fairly normal. Of course, my friends did think I was a bit nuts to commission an artist to do me a piece with Shirayuki Mizore from Rosario+Vampire sitting on my BMW holding the BMW roundel in her lap. I wanted it for my car's nav system boot screen lol. That's the nice thing about being an elder anime fan; the career is usually further along and you've access to significantly more financial resources for the hobby than you did when you were a teenage fan :)

I don't think so. I have friends that are around that age who still watch anime. Maybe not as much but still do.

If you're spending all your free time on anime and you're above the age of 25, then I think you have other issues you need to work out. If you just watch it occasionally, then that's another thing. Anime may be partially judged, but that doesn't mean it's just childish and immature cartoons (depending on what you're watching). Some of it can possess adult themes (no, not Hentai) that deal with real-life situations. No matter what age, I wouldn't find it weird to watch anime. It's only when you let it consume your life that I find the oddity of the situation begin to arise.

I dont think its weird, I am 23 next month and will probably continue to watch it off and on for the rest of my life. But i also rarely watch regular tv unless its movies on like HBO and showtime, so during my free time its mostly anime/manga when I'm home.

Not for me. Maybe if people act SUPER KAWAII (like an idiot) in public something, then they should tone it down. Otherwise they can watch and enjoy whatever they like.

I know I'll never stop appreciating sakuga anime. I have particular appreciation for those few who can draw this stuff well, because of the sheer level of knowledge/exp they possess.

Well, almost everything that was to say has been spoken by Strahan. And as my answer I would say that 25+ yo person watching anime isn't something weird, just a bit rare (in my experience though), oh well if god will give it then in two years I'll be also 25 yo and after years of watching anime and enjoying it I don't think that I'll drop it.

I am 33 years old so I would not think it would be weird if someone 25 years or older was watching anime. Now if they were watching some genre aimed at little elementary school kids then I would think that person is weird regardless if they under 25 years or older than 25 years old.

No. I met a 26-year-old guy my friend knows when we went to pregame for a party and he had a collection of manga and some published webcomics so he probably watches some anime too.

I do not think it is weird. Society says it is weird so that is what more people think. There is no reason for it to be weird. My dad watches cartoons and anime and he is 44.

defintly dont think its wierd, ive been watching anime for a long time i see no reason to stop just becouse im a few years older now,abv i dont watch it all day in my room not doin nuttin all day, but i do still find sometime to watch.i have planty of other friends who are over 20 and still watch as well.i think the bottom line is ,that you dont just stop watching cuz you got a bit older , its just more the amount of time u spend watching it is different cuz most ppl 25 plus work and or go to school most of the day. abv if your 25 and still spend hours inside your house just watching or still go crazy over the newest lil figure that came out and u just must have it, ye ... thats a lil overboard at this age, but thats juss my 2 cents.
i would hit you ,but i dont wanna get any douchbag on my hands :P

Well, I've met people at cons who are in their 30's and still watch anime. My mother is almost 40 and she watches stuff like K-ON and Miyazaki's works with my sisters and I. My dad is almost 40 as well and he still plays the vidya with me, plus he loves him some Evangelion. Plus, they watch a lot of American cartoons as well. So, as long as you're not a weeabo when you're in that age range, I don't really find it wrong~

I've heard of people in their sixties who watch anime, and although I'm not sure I consider it a preferable future for myself to be watching cartoons past the age of 30, my answer to the topic in discussion would definitely be no, I see nothing weird in people over 25 who watch anime. :)

Not in the slightest. We have cable, and most of the time I flick through channels, and never find anything to watch amongst the crap that is on these days, so I end up on the Anime Network. (when I am not on my comp that is.)

How is it any worse to prefer anime over things like soap operas or game shows? You want fantasy or unrealistic themes? Spend one day watching a soap, or those daytime talk shows and you will see what I mean. A friend of our family was addicted to shows like Jersey Shore and Bad Girls and the Price is Right.

Give me anime anyday ^_^

First off I couldn't help but smile @ "casual everyday working/non-working person in their late 20s and up."

I'm not over 25, I'll be 25 by the end of this year, I have a full time job ( so Not NEET / Hakikomori ) and I find it fairly normal to watch anime, I do watch other things too, but anime is really intriguing, and then there are many anime targeted to older audience.
Of course the case of a 45 year old man watching moe .... hmm .... well creepy.

I also have a friend who is 32, and still likes anime.

You are the weird one. What does age has to do with anything? Opinions like yours is what create bad stereotypes that only children are supposed to watch animation.

In the end is just a story drawn instead of live filming. their is no difference. If you like art you might like animation more than filming.
Now if you watch kid shows it might seem strange but that goes for animated or not. In anime really childish shows are staff like Pokemon and others that i don't know well because i don't watch them but every other kind, even moe and shounen aren't for children at all.

What i find weird is people going home and watching other people closed in homes threw their TV. The channels call it reality TV, i call it brain cell killing. Now this people need to get a life. Watching anime is like nuclear science in-frond of that shit.

Anyway is just something to watch like movies, sports and etc and there is no reason not to watch anime. I don't see how watching "Terminator" (that is about a robot from the future who came to kill our future leader), or even watching porn is a grown thing but something being in animated form suddenly makes it childish.
Who decided that moving art is childish? The medium isn't what makes something childish or not.

Not at all, as long as they're not creepy about it. I see older people at anime cons all the time. There's nothing inherently strange about it. It's just like younger people, really. The same stuff that would make a teenager creepy will make an adult creepy, it's just magnified a little. The same applies to the reverse.

I see what you mean, but still, there are plenty of anime out there that are very much meant for adults (and I don't mean the hentai kind of "adult"). As a fan of seinen anime myself, if I were to jump to conclusions about the kind of anime this teacher watched, I would jump to the seinen or josei. In which case, it just makes them a cool teacher.

For the record, I'm 19, and I see myself continuing to watch anime for the rest of my life, or at least until I run out of stuff to watch.

Age doesn't matter. Some people won't get it, some people refuse to understand it. It doesn't matter what they think. People who think its weird to watch anime over 25, are probably the same people who think playing video games are for kids.

Not really. Take a ride on any train in Japan and or walk into any anime shop and you'll find men with their girlfriends. Of course you'll find otaku too but it's a medium of entertainment. It's open to all just like movies or video games.

No, I don't find it weird for people over 25 or older than me to be watching animes. It is entertainment and I think should be an enjoyment to everyone. Some animes are also directed towards a group of more mature viewers also (some that are 17+). So it's not that weird that older people watch animes

lol I've been going to conventions since the begining of high school and I remember always feeling sort of odd at the idea during the cons that there was these "old" people looking at the same stuff as me, or we're both looking at that one sale.
Get use to it, somewhat.

Depends on the anime...would surely find it weird if somebody older than 25 watching stuff like Wedding Peach or DoReMi or anything in the Genre of Magical Girl like that.
But on the other hand I'm a 24 Year Old who loves Movies that were made decades before he was even born like Nosferatu, Metropolis etc...

I don't think it's weird...plenty of anime is targeted at adults, not to mention many non-anime cartoons are as well. (I know that as a kid I wasn't aloud to watch The Simpsons because my parents said it was an "adult's" cartoon, which is true, there is definitely stuff in there that is inappropriate for little kids).

I'm over 25. I don't watch much at all nowadays, but it's not strange if it's instead of regular TV etc, is it? Not that I think it's healthy to spend all your free time in front of any kind of media.

I watched a ton of anime when I was young (10-15 especially), but nowadays I just don't have the time for it.

I just hit 27 still watching anime. I don't see why age would matter for any hobby anyone has, people need to just mind their own business these days . I still have a lot of friends I have known since high school and college that still watch it as well, and you know what I will still be watching anime as long as it entertains me.

Its funny though one of my ex's stopped watching anime and when I did watch it she would say somethign like "anime is for kids blah blah blah, I would say "well scrapbooking is for old ladies" she was really into scrapbooking she maybe spent a couple grand a month on that stuff.

In the end I guess I would not find it weird for somone over 25 to watch anime.
