I was initially under the impression that FMAB was a proper sequel to FMA with 2 movies and some specials, so I watched both the og series and the first movie. Only after I started watching Brotherhood I realised its not a sequel but a remake of the same story with some new scenes and content. After searching about it a bit more I heard that FMAB was more faithful to the manga but I personally think FMAB is a downgrade from the original considering its overly softer and funnier tone and rushed character and plot progression to fit in the new scenes.

But considering FMAB is such highly rated, I also dont want to miss out if there is any new good content. So I would appreciate if some of yall have some episode suggestion that i should watch or if i should drop the series entirely.

The same happened to me and you should definitely watch because in FMAB there's a different plot and more characters rhay weren't in FMA. it's really different so give it a shot. fmab is overall better and has a more satisfying end.

It's not like FMAB it's more faithful, the original Fullmetal Alchemist series you're talking about it's a completely different thing. It started to tell things that have nothing to do with the original source, the manga, because it wasn't finished yet, so they had to think up to something to show in the first anime to give it an end

I actually think FMA does a better job at the first part of the story than FMAB, as they kinda rushed it the second time. So I think they're both definitely worth a watch.

FMA is just very different and doesn’t follow the manga and FMAB is basically the proper adaptation, it’s also more enjoyable to watch (the tone of FMA didn’t click with me tbh)

You should. It’s a different story, character’s personality are different, story is different, ending is different (and better).

FMA is the first season of FMAB but with more depth and explanation. I too watched FMA before FMAB, and while watching Brotherhood, the first season honestly felt like all of FMA but as a blur, its like they took the most important scenes from FMA and shoved in into 12 episodes, but the rest of the show is original content and some of the best content in anime at that. Highly recommend watching the first season anyways, dont try and miss out on an episode.

I always say watch fma 1st then fmab 2nd since fmab does the starting arcs in a rushed fashion. It is clearly made for those who watched the of 2003 version.

“But considering fmab is such highly rated”
You’ve got the wrong idea, fmab isn’t so highly rated because it’s one of the best shows or anything like that. People just give it a 10 because they have so much nostalgia connected to it.

I'm re watching fmab after years. I was a much bigger fan of 03 growing up and have seen it something like 5 times. fmab goes a completely different direction, and both are very good. fma keeps a much more solemn tone but fmab has some unforgettable moments that are just amazing. if you liked og fma you'll adore it.

just my opinion, but it holds up.
ik people do anything to keep it #1 on mal but it DESERVES high ratings. it's a fucking phenomenal show. so I don't think it's the wrong idea at all.

FMA does a good job of adapting the beginning of the manga but goes off track and does it’s own thing. FMAB was made to properly adapt rest of the story as it was written. Both are very entertaining.

In my opinion you should watch FMAB first, then if you liked it watch FMA and Conqueror of Shamballa movie. I think both versions are amazing with FMAB being slightly better overall. Later on you can read the manga and compare all variants

can't believe your words... fmab is the original story... I do get your point about the first arcs being a bit quick in brotherhood, but I think that's perfectly fine, since they were developed in fma, but when you surpass that, everything is perfection.

Yeah, I would say that is not "worth" but a necessity, FMAB is the one everyone should watch first since is the true story, I watched FMA also, but the story in the FMAB was better to me

It is very different from FMA. Everyone has different motives and there are new characters aswell. If you really liked FMA then definitely watch FMAB. It’s like an alternate universe where the only thing that hasnt changed is your favourite Elric brothers. Most people prefer FMAB anyway.

For me however, I am the rare case that really liked FMA and I found the story of FMAB just a bit too dragged out and boring. Still glad I watched it but wish i had given up on brotherhood when I started getting bored. It ended up really hurting my view of FMA as a whole. I’ll have to rewatch fma in a few years to try forget brotherhood

Yes.

Personally I like both versions, and I think both are worth watching. To me, there are scenes and plots the first anime does better, I like the music better too. The issue (and I'd say maybe the ONLY issue I had) with FMAB is that the first part feels somewhat rushed because they seemed to want to be over with what's already been animated for FMA, sadly they skipped some important bits that could confuse new watchers, but after that it finds its own pace and becomes more consistent.

Anyway: absolutely worth it, they did a good job adapting the manga and the story is more consistent overall. Please do watch if you liked the first series, it's definitely a good one! There's a reason why it's highly rated.

Im watching it right now too! The early episodes did feel slow and rushed but after 15-ish episodes the story changes completely from the first series and Im liking it.

Of course FMAB is worth watching after FMA! For all the reasons, it is practically better in every aspect. Lot better animation, better characters(Roy is SO much better in FMAB), no spoilers; but better villains, better ending etc. I could go on forever!

Im almost done watching FMAB and I agree! Not gonna give any spoilers myself but the relations between characters is handled pretty well too. And Hohenheim's origin story is better written than in FMA.

Comparing them doesn't make much sense, but comparing their early part does no favour to the second series. That one was clearly made with the assumption that it's audience had already seen the first series and so, told the beginning of its story very poorly (probably to spare episodes for the audience before reaching the part that " mattered", and to spare money?).
As for the tone you dislike, unlike the comparatively less light/goofy tone of the 2004 show, I won't try to convince you otherwise since you're right. This will stay like that until the end, while getting a larger and bigger adventure. The original is a "young boys adventure manga" after all.

Where was the nostalgia coming from when it was getting high marks while airing or not long after?

@xXCaptainJXx So, the audience watching the show in 2007 was blinded by nostalgia stemmed from a show they watched in 2004-5? (I remember very well how the trend during "Brotherhood"was to spit continuously on the prior series, so beloved by fansub audiences a handful of years before.)

I also watched FMA before FMAB. I do really like some episodes of FMA (as you eluded to as well). Once you get past the beginning of FMAB it adds a whole different layer to the story in an incredible way. 10/10 would recommend, and the ending is so much more satisfying.
