What does alternate settings do we get in these 3 series

Wake up to reality! Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world.The longer you live, the more you realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility.Everywhere you look in this world,wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as well.As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist.The selfish intent of wanting to preserve peace, initiates war and hatred is born in order to protect love.

DBZ is the original series. DBZ Kai is just the condensed version of original DBZ series with no fillers and edited many unnecessary scenes. Kai have better pacing but it depends on what you want to watch. Otherwise there is no change in the story overall.

What the guy above said
The 2014 version of Kai is just a sequel to the original Kai that adapts the rest of the story.
If you're thinking of getting into the dbz anime then Kai is a good way but I prefer the manga anyways tho the dub for Kai is fantastic

@KingOfMAL It's not just that but;

The Faulconer soundtrack isn't there.
The new scenes they edited in along the old animation stand out like a sore thumb.
The supposed filler episodes in Z were removed (Garlic Jr. saga or Piccolo & Goku going for driving lessons for example)
Pacing is "better" technically but for me it went way too fast (probably because of my nostalgia for the original 291 episodes)

The one plus side is the voice acting though, they definitely improved on that but Z was fine as is imo.

As I said in my review;

"To summarize, if you're an old fan of Dragon Ball Z and want to relive the nostalgia, you're missing out on way too much compared to the older series, even if it's double the length in episodes. - Meaning you should definitely watch Z.

If you're a new fan or can't afford to watch almost 300 episodes Kai should be fine for you as it does what it was advertised as, just don't expect to resonate with the fans of Z as it's a completely different experience."

Don't bother with everything Kai and just watch the original Z version.

Choosing Kai over Z is like choosing to read just the summary of the novel instead of the actual novel. Obviously, if you really want to get into the story and enjoy the most of it, the latter experience is the right one.

I saw a version of Kai that retained the Faulconer score. Counting that specifically, it competes much stronger. And with the Yamamoto music before he was caught, it also had a distinctive feel. Both of these are good options.

But the Kikuchi music was poorly inserted into Kai is the problem because of said previous composer being caught and them having no time to adjust the episodes properly. Some scenes feel strange with how they edited it. And a lot of scenes in Z were amplified with the correct track being played, so it plays a major role in the enjoyment.

Nadolny will forever be Young Gohan (for sure post-Android Saga Gohan), as will Vollmer be Bulma. Losing these two voices made Kai much more difficult to absorb, even with the restored Faulconer music. But some of the other folks are right, the acting is a lot better in many scenes.

But you do occasionally miss a nice line or two, such as Cell's infamous "another fighter you could have saved" right after crushing Android 16's head, if not the overly comical "I will take this bean without hesitation" line. The SS2 Young Gohan yell is unrivaled in the original FUNimation dub as well.

But either way, you're not missing much by choosing Kai. Especially if you didn't have time to form any bias with the replaced VAs. However, try to find the Faulconer edit if you can. Makes it dramatically better. Counting both in their vanilla state, Z for sure.
