| Anyone else looking into upscaling old anime titles with AI? I used a basic ai video enhancer tool and got more than good results. The anime is Busou Renkin, it's only avalaible in 720 x 480p I upscaled by 2x to 1440 x 960p. Used denoiser and sharpen processing. Though it takes about an hour to upscale just one episode with my 1660ti gpu. Just guessing it would take about 1 to 10 minutes per ep with a 4090. I haven't upscaled a whole ep yet and i have no idea what will happen to the subs too. I'll try to upscale a whole wp next time. Left is Before, Right is After           |

If you upload these anywhere i hope you clearly label it as upscaled along with program and settings so no one mistakenly thinks it is unedited aside from subs and so they dont accidentally do exact same wasting energy doing so Some cases it looks like an improvement and others it takes away from the atmosphere and makes things like shadows too crisp looking to my tastes and highlights too much in contrast from the colour they are highlighting and it brings out flaws like those buildings some look bad sharpened. So i think you should be selective on what to upscale with that model based on art style and the kind of atmosphere a show has. Avoid sharpening anything ethereal maybe i guess not sure. Maybe experiment with different models for comparison till you get a good idea of what ones work for style anime. Test on short clips. Edit: looking closer the one where that guy is with that tethered weapon it jacked up his mouth it looks like. |

nice looks like a remastered version. Apart from a few series though, I don't think most people with the time, energy, resources will be interested in doing this though
| @Dannyr22 Ya. It takes too much time and pc resource. But i just wanted to test out the potential in it. Because i think that the process to enhance is made more accessible, cheaper, easier and faster with AI. Maybe in the future when AI processing is even faster and pc hardware is better people can look into enhancing old 480p content more casually. Right now it's still a daunting task. |

Some cases it looks like an improvement and others it takes away from the atmosphere and makes things like shadows too crisp looking to my tastes and highlights too much in contrast from the colour they are highlighting and it brings out flaws like those buildings some look bad sharpened. So i think you should be selective on what to upscale with that model based on art style and the kind of atmosphere a show has. Avoid sharpening anything ethereal maybe i guess not sure. Maybe experiment with different models for comparison till you get a good idea of what ones work for style anime. Test on short clips.

| @traed I am not looking to upload any. I have a 1660ti and a 6 core cpu. It takes about 2 hours for just one 24min 480p video to upscale to 2x. It will take days just to upscale 1 season. Then there's also cutting out the hardcoded subs from the old file and pasting it again in the new file after enhancing the subs quality with a subs edit tool. That's a full time job. Unless you run it to render on a second system to render it's doable. Maybe if i get a 40 series Nvidia card with AVI encoder, it will be much faster. But Idk if AVI encoder will be an option in the AI video enhancer software. I kept the setting to sharpen and denoise the most. I am sure it can be dialed down with other AI processing option like proteus. I just thought that the end result would be grainy so i selected Artemis AI that denoises and sharpens more. Well it's not grainy but Artemis does ruin the depth perception by sharping objects that are meant to be perceived as far and blurry. There are 3 other AI models i haven't tried yet.  I think the tethered weapon images are off by a frame. The video enhancer tool has a comparison preview but it lags a lot. |

Since id think there would be a setting to remove artifacts in old digital video that has been uploaded and downloaded repeatedly. I think denoise is more for an issue with film dust and VHS degradation and dark scenes on digital video cams unless im mistaken. Id say instead of doing series you couldnt do to completion do old anime commercials then you can upload them to YouTube and try to get ad revenue lol Could also do shorter length movies and OVA series. |

| @traed Sounds good on paper, but uploading anime on yt generally gets an instant demonetization for copyright unless it's transformative content. Japanese companies specially take copyright issues strictly. There is a youtube channel, MuseAsia, they upload entire anime series. They actually have some deal with various studio to publish on yt officially. Even uploading the latest ep of some airing anime. https://www.youtube.com/@MuseAsia Oh and i am late to the game lol. I found this guy on yt remastering old anime openings using the same software. The channel is already a year old. https://www.youtube.com/@com.figurado The lovely complex op remaster is really good. It even got 25k views. Lovely complex OP remastered with AI - For comparision - The colors looks a bit saturated but otherwise the result is fantastic. I have no clue if the channel is getting any revenue for ads or views but it looks like a hobby channel. I won't be surprised if it eventually gets strikes for copyright if the channel gets more popular and studios/publishers catch wind of it. There aren't any AI models specifically trained to remaster anime. Generally i don't think it's necessary. AI models can be trained to handle any content you throw at it as long as some tweaking is done for specific content. I think we'll all soon get to watch HD remastered versions of old 480p anime soon. The potential is promising. But it will have to be pirated content. So there has to be at least one degenerate weeb out there willing to sacrifice their time and pc resource to make and upload remaster versions. Studios aren't going to publish remastered versions again i assume. Unless they do it themselves with AI and publish again, that would be great. I think a remasterd Great Teacher Onizuka will be really popular. Even Lovely Complex and many more titles. |

That is why I said commercials because stuff like that I dont think anyone bothers with taking down though there arent a whole lot but some are in MALs database. Might be able to get away with OP and EDs since there is a lot of those on YouTube and I think they usually dont get taken down unless it is a full song with OPs and EDs usually arent.
For the record all anime before digital would be in HD already aside from it degrading from damage which is how some remasters are done, they use the source then reconvert it to digital again. Also HDVHS also existed in the past so there is possibly a small number of old anime in HD from that as well even if the original master reels were lost

Lastly Theia AI. Somehow this AI actually made the quality worse than the source. Already tried the denoiser/sharpen one. That one ruins depth of far away objects. Proteus is superb. Only that really in case of low res upscaled to really high res like 360p to 4k will still have some weird brush like effects in some frames Dragonball OP Proteus AI I think Proteus AI is the best option in Topaz labs. |

Amazing, the results look sharper. It would be better to upscale the old anime video to 4K. I tried Anime4K, AVCLabs Video Enhancer AI, the latter works better, some details get greatly improved. |

| @Jennycaa Oh that's really good results! I personally think the enhancement should be a bit more softer than sharp, but otherwise i really like everything else. The colors aren't too saturated too. I think it will look perfect if the border lines of the drawing is a bit more softer and not really sharp. It will blend really well then. Like in the original pic you don't focus that much on the dark lines but on the enhanced pic the thick drawing lines a lot more noticeable. I digress! I am not an expert lol |

| @DesuMaiden That's a very good idea. Fortunately, something like upscaling doesn't require you to trust them, you can look at the results and immediately tell if it's done the right things or not. |

| @Astachanna Well there's not much value to it. Anyone can do it for free with a click of a button. You just need a good gpu to save time and leave your pc for the software to process it. AI does everything. Besides I'll get in some really serious legal trouble if I sell it lol, too bothersome for me to do. |

| @traed Sounds complicated. But i think upscaling only helps in really really old anime titles that don't have good quality available online. Most in 480p or lower, released before 2010s. All the 720p and above titles don't need any AI upscaling imo, the native res upscaled or not is good enough. Busou renkin's native quality is terrible, it's at 480p with washed colors. But new titles like one punch man are really good quality in native without upscaling. |
