Hi, I've recently kept on reading Berserk online instead of in book-form and I noticed that the first chapters pre-Golden Age are called 0.01 and so on until 0.16, after that it starts again with Chapter 1. Now, I know why that is like that, but how should I put it in my List when I am, for example, still at the 0-chapters, and not 1?
The discussions here talk about 0.01 like it's chapter 1, but it somehow still ends up at the current chapter count and I am just confused lol

I just waited until chapter 1 to put it as 1 chapter read, it just makes it simpler

When berserk had the “on hiatus” status on MAL you could mark it completed and iirc it counted the black swordsman arc towards the total chapters. Back then nobody knew if berserk was gonna continue or not so it was kinda like how vagabond is now with a total chapter & volume count, but since resuming its defaulted back to ?? for the total. You probably can count them but then you also have to remember that chapter 83 was later removed and given its own entry so you would have to take the total chapters, add 16, then subtract 1.

All of this is to say that it’s probably a lot simpler to just go by the official chapter number and disregard the finer details until it’s actually complete.

@HYPIXS Why was 83 removed?

It’s a bit complex, afaik Miura decided it gave away too much too early and had it pulled from later volume editions. Now it doesn’t even show up in the volume it would have at all anymore and most people don’t seem to even know that they skipped a chapter or that it existed to begin with. Nowadays you’ll have people arguing whether it’s canon or not and if what was shown in that chapter was abandoned altogether.

The one shot in volume fourteen adds +1 to the total chapter count though. So in the end the removed chapter 83 and the included one-shot cancel each other out in a minus one, plus one sort of deal at any point beyond volume fourteen.

To answer OPs question, yes the sixteen prologue chapters do in fact count towards the total chapter count. But stay away from the discussions because you'll find people routinely discussing either sixteen chapters ahead or sixteen chapters behind.

It is canon because the idea of evil shows up in the canon later on as far as I know.

@TarikKabir The concept itself could appear later on and even become canon after being mentioned by name, but any further details known from ch. 83, or its content, are not canon. If they were canon, then this chapter would've appeared in any official volume release of the manga, even if years after its magazine premiere. But it didn't, sadly. I say sadly, because I enjoyed reading it. It provided an interesting extra info regarding the Berserk's lore. However, I trust Miura-sensei's judgment and I believe he, as the original creator, had solid reasons to treat that one chapter that way.

Most of Berserk fans you will encounter use the official chapter count, which in fact - like you have noticed - has less chapters than there were released officially.

I suggest going this way: for the sake of discussions about certain chapters and managing your list, go with the official chapter count. Once this manga wraps up and completes its serialization, you can just go back to your list and add these 16 first chapters if this series (ch. 0.01-0.16) to your chapter count, or just mark this manga as Completed once it finishes to have them filled automatically. Most likely, unless something will change, MAL Manga Database will have those chapters included in the total amount of officially released Berserk chapters included in the volume releases.
