or a minor version of the " in 100 years" argument.

2000s series today are in a much better state than the 80s series 20 years ago.

Probably because at that time most of the focus was on post mid-90s series that made anime universally popular instead of being region or country specific.

Unfortunately the state of 80s series in Japanese language with subs, was very poor at that time and each viewer had to be content with the dubbed 80s Anime available, dubbed in other languages except English. Very few series were fansubbed in English to completion. Even lotgh had not finished being subbed yet. So it was a mixed situation between native dubs and fansubs.

In my case I had to be content in finding local 80s dubs or other series in French, German and Italian or else it was impossible to watch those series.

But 2000s series are much better organised and more accessible in many languages, subs or dubs, also thanks to resubbing from English.

Another factor is the narrative and pacing. There is a much bigger gap between 80s and 2000s than 2000s and today. 80s anime had also the damaging kids Marketing and censorship abroad. While something like Cowboy Bebop or Akira had the correct marketing

Today things are better for 80s series too fortunately but 40 year gap is very wide leading them further down in popularity and rankings.

I don't think this analysis is particularly meaningful from the perspective of availability/technology. From that perspective, it will only ever become easier to watch things, even older things, so it's less about what year's anime you are watching and almost solely about when you are watching it. The only counterargument is that less popular older stuff may become harder to find over time from the seven seas.

I'd add also the interest for encyclopedic reasons, eg to watch the earlier work of the staff whose 2000s work was more popular and who today are not as prolific.
But this aspect was not as pronounced during that time, with the focus being more on their most recent work. Very few staff had the historical treatment with their past work being widely available , eg Miyazaki and Takahata and M. Oshii

Yes, 2003 Astro Boy finally got a complete set of fansubs in 2021. Unfortunately, no version of GeGeGe no Kitaro other than the latest has been fully subbed.

what you should worry about the most are yet to be digitized episodes and shows, rather than dubs imo.
in my case, a lot of early 2000s anime are hard to come by because of american licensor vultures.
I agree with the pacing, completely!
I think the ratings on old and obscure anime are way more sane than what we have on current stuff. at least my own scores are close to mal scores on them, and I like old anime a lot. I think it's completely fine if most people never watch good anime. it's their loss.
I'm tired of trying to get people to watch anime with substance. they only care about what's popular on social media, or what anitubers think. most of them just don't give a damn about anime itself, just the hype surrounding it.

@Lucifrost
does https://myanimelist.net/anime/3710/Hakaba_Kitarou count? I thought it was entirely subbed.

It's not always the American's fault. The English dub of Viewtiful Joe was released on DVD, for example, and I was able to watch it on Crunchyroll. But nobody can fansub the 2nd half (which was never dubbed), because the Japanese version is impossible to find.

I specified GeGeGe in my previous post because I know that Hakaba is fully fansubbed.

In other hand, many great manga never get fully translated bcs it's unpopular so there's no demand. I doubt even 40 years from now those mangas will finally fully translated because it's just going to be more obscure every years. Someone need to translate it out of passion, not for money.

Well I'm glad to see more 80's anime are being picked up or being re-licensed:

For example, I got chance to watch Godmars in it's entirety on Crunchyroll. And now we are able to get Project A-Ko remastered and also for the first time can be watched in 16:9.

It certainly put the old DVD version out of the water.

Also, I'm happy to see several obscure 80's anime titles getting released in the US for the first time like Arion (which has never seen a previous release in the US):

I can say the same for Glass Mask (1984):

I was also happy to see Gunbusters getting a definitive release and a English dub on blu-ray:

Oh and Violence Jack (all of the OVA), and the biggest surprise is that the 2nd and 3rd episode give you the option to watch it in 16:9

I'm also happy that now Space Adventure Cobra TV series has been able to be license and now I'm watching it currently on Retrocrush TV, and also getting a blu-ray release:

It's not only 80's anime that I'm happy to see, I was so happy to see 70's anime getting release in the US/North America for the first time like Casshan:

Aim for the Ace:

That's a big difference when it comes to watching 80's (& 70's anime) today as a western anime fan, and as someone who is a retro anime fan!!!

@mdo7
They licensed the early 70s Aim for the Ace which has already been watched by everyone who cares. The did not license the late 70s Aim for the Ace remake which still has no fansubs.

@Lucifrost I'll give Discotek time to pick that up, I'm not a tennis fan but I would kill to see all 6 seasons of Major, and I would kill to see Touch being license given that I'm a big baseball guy and baseball anime is probably the only sports I can relate to since I played baseball.

They already skipped it and licensed the sequel, "Aim for the Ace! Another Match."

@Lucifrost Maybe they're still negotiating, hopefully it'll get license.

Look, tennis is not my thing, and that include this anime. So it's none of my business.
