So I'm not looking for spoilers so please be as light as possible.
Now throughout season 1 and 2 we have seen Cid/Shadow fighting various enemies and those enemies have needed help, the cult members who chew on their little red pills to boost their magic power, and Iris who used that artifact sword.
But every time this has occurred Shadow has uttered the phrase "I cannot be defeated with borrowed power" or something to that effect.
Now here lies my problem, in the last episode of the first season it is revealed that Cid had defeated an ancient mist dragon, and in doing so was bathed in the dragon's breath, it suggested that this gave him power.
So back to the title, is Shadow just a hypocrite or am I missing something?

He defeated the dragon therefore gained power , it isn’t borrowed it’s earned

I dont think Cid actually cares that much. He just wants to say it cause he thinks it sounds cool.

A lot of stuff he does is because it sounds or looks cool. I mean, while in the tournament, he fought in he wanted to be the weak person that no one expected to win. When he was debrief by Beta at a mission, he made the room look as cool as possible.

I know, he spares no expense in building Shadows grandeur, no effort is too much, after all it's the only thing he cares about.
that's why I can't see him cutting corners in Shadows persona, "borrowing" power and then criticising others who do the same.
that's what I'm struggling with, is his power "borrowed" as he would put it, what did the dragons breath actually do to/for him.
is Cid a hypocrite or an overpowered Edgelord with a god complex.

The only other thing I can think of is. Cid defeated a Mist Dragon, and instead of killing it. The Dragon is his subordinate, and it is using its power of mist to protect Shadow Garden base. He's not directly adding the Dragon power in combination with his own. The Dragon is protecting his territory.

Idk if the story really even suggests that he gained power from that. I don’t really recall the conversation exactly. But wasn’t it more like he got bathed by the dragons breath as in like anointed with “keys” so to speak to the dragons domain? More of a we don’t need to worry about the dragon because cid beat it and was granted this land as a reward sort of thing. Like being knighted or some such nonsense, dragon style.

Also as previously stated, even if he did gain power from the dragon he had to beat the dragon first to get it meaning any boon/buff etc was earned by himself. It also likely didn’t provide much of a buff if any because he beat what sounded like a legendary dragon by himself so he was already strong AF.

Which is totally different from a pill made and developed by someone else to boost some meager strength. Now they just have boosted stats with no clue how to really use the boost, as cid keeps telling them. Like boosting your level in a game after only having completed the basic intro and being totally lost with all the new abilities and passive skills that become unlocked. “Let me give you a lesson on proper use of magic” or something along those lines as he says time and again. Like a veteran who spent time and effort getting to the same level that sees the boosted player and thrashes them without taking a single hit.

Which is just as bad as an artifact where the entirety of the power comes from external factors. Like for example if you use this super powerful item your friend gave you in a game so you’re stomping low level monsters. But you’re still way to low level to fight the main boss and get instakilled. So it doesn’t help at all on its own. Versus if you beat the boss and got the super powerful item as a drop to make you a little more powerful since you can already beat the boss single-handedly. Like imagine if that artifact the princess used was a catalyst for magic, if shadow used it he could wipe the whole town off the map with one swing. But in the hands of someone as “weak” as iris it just does a long range sweep of fire. Nowhere does it say that’s how the artifact works but you get the idea. It’s just some item made and developed in another time that is considered strong on its own separate from the user.

Don’t get hung up on a practically trivial detail with no concrete meaning and let that somehow ruin your view of the show as a whole. I mean it’s been referenced one time in the anime and that’s it. You’re digging way to deep into this. Anything (until confirmed) is purely speculation and in your own head.

I'm not going to let it ruin the show for me I just can't decide if the idea of him being a raging hypocrite would make the story funnier or not.

He was already op before hand so I think it's of little consequence really.

Also you're misusing the term "hypocrite", he never said you shouldn't use borrowed power or that it's necessarily bad. What he said is that you can't defeat him with borrowed power, two entirely different things.

Borrowed power is more about how you do little to no effort for that power, Cid won't have any problem if you're the one who makes the pills or the artifact, something like always have an access for that power. The dragon breath on the other hand is merely an immunity to his poison magic that surrounds Alexandria. He got that by defeating him so he deserves it.

When he bathed this that power he made it his own and word to earn it. It's not temporary like the red pills. So I don't think he's a hypocrite.

you're looking too deep into a character whose whole personality is being a cringe edgelord chuuni who anime fans unironically like, also you take this show writing seriously when it's bad and doesn't make sense

You say it, he defeat the dragon and then take its power.
He proof himself he worth to gain it by slay the dragon.
If any cult member ever face Aurora, defeat her and claim her blood then your statement is true.
But they did not.

How is that so hard to think?

The fuck is this shit you're pulling out yor ass? The dragon made him the ruler he did not give him power. Next time you want to ask something at least do a decent research on the matter like a normal human being

cid may or many not gain power from dragon,it doesn't matter, first thing is he beat dragon and killed it. means he is already overpowered, it means he doesn't need other power he did his training to fullest and learned about magic to its fullest. its total efforts that he pup for his training is matters. and he just wants to say that sudden borrowed powers may give you power but will lack accuracy and precision. and their attack power will decrease, that's all he want to say i think. he wants them to fight with their original skills so that he can enjoy that fight, 😄😄.

I can’t believe i’m responding but here it goes:
First, hypocrisy rages across all of anime! Sometimes in the same sentence characters will contradict themselves. Second, as others have pointed out, Cid don’t care, he just does and says what he thinks is cool. I’ve caught other “hypocrisies” but just cuz it’s the coolest thing to say in that moment. Lastly, power taken or given is not the same as borrowed and he was just pointing out that a power up pill wasn’t going to work.
