You need the original to understand the characters and the situations.

This Sequel has a different plot from the previous Manga , and has a new cast.
However , some old characters makes a comeback after some time , there is basically no worldbuilding , and nothing is explained about the antagonist , which was revealed in a plot twist toward the end of the previous Manga...

So it's still recommended to watch/read Nanatsu no Taizai before this one.

I would say no, because the plot happened after the original series ended, with a bit of tease for what happened at the end. so even if you lack knowledge of og, it shouldn't be a big problem, as everything will eventually be explained. But watching as seeing your old characters back just hit different.

the trailer has a massive spoiler from previous SDS season.

The author stated it’s a standalone sequel so yes you can watch it without watching the original but it’s 100x better experience if you watch the first 3 reasons then just read the rest of it .

Having actually read the manga, I can say that at least for now it isn't strictly necessary. All the characters and the story at the start are entirely new and explained completely. However, particularly as the story goes on it does reintroduce and connect back to the original. For this reason it is still preferred to have watched the original, as you will be spoiled and confused at times, but you can still for the most part enjoy it as is. I would liken it most to watching Boruto without Naruto, Dragon Ball Z without Dragon Ball, or for a non anime example Star Wars: The Force Awakens without the original. You will be missing out compared to fans, but not by much. Ultimately, as with any choice around entertainment, it is simply down to what you personally feel like watching and what you think you will enjoy. Don't listen to the hordes of others forcing you to watch a certain way, but instead journey through the world of anime in your own way and pace. You may be judged for it, but as long as you are happy then what does it matter.

ideally yeah, but in this first cour rest assured that even if you haven't finished the prequel you can still enjoy this cour since percival and his crew has no connection with the past cast, but after finishing the first cour you obviously need to watch the prequels because major characteris are returning, villains shock value and overall enjoyment of character interaction

If you are talking about Ensa no Edinburgh , it's not necessary.
It's still an Epilogue to Nanatsu no Taizai/Prologue to Mokushiroku no Yonkishi tho.

Hikari ni Norowareshi Mono-tachi & Ensa no Edinburgh are Canon.
Only Tenkuu no Torawarebito is not.

Nop , but a story does not necessarily need to be adapted from the original source material to be Canon in the continuity.

The 2 Movies i mentioned were officially written by the Original creator to be Epilogues to Nanatsu no Taizai. (+Prologue to Mokushiroku no Yonkishi)
The Ensa no Edinburgh Movie even lore he created in one of the Spin-Off.

@Alexioos95 i see i always thought that anime has to be adapted from manga/light novel to be canon. ty for sharing that information

That's a very common misconception about the meaning and implicity of Canon/Filler continuities.

The 2 important points to determine if it's Canon or not are : The involvement and opinion of the original Author on the project , and the incoherence(s) it creates with the pre-existing established Canon. It can quickly become problematic if the original Author makes retcons for X or Y reasons (Toriyama and Dragon Ball) , or even loses the rights (Lucas and Star Wars).

As for Nanatsu no Taizai , Nakaba is the one who made the scenario for both Movies i was talking about , he officially said they were Epilogue to Nanatsu/Prologue to Mokushiro , and they have no incoherence... So yeah , it's Canon. x)
Edit : Oh , and for the 1st Movie , Nakaba was not involved at all , and it does not fit anywhere in the timeline... Therefore , it's Filler.
