Snake's history is largely surrounded in mystery, so as for his feats of combat they're largely unknown, but going off we do know:

Raw combat proficiency seems to be rather equal, but having seen Askeladd cut through a man's helmet and through damn near his entire body past it using only a sword, we can pretty safely say that Askeladd has more power.
We already know Snake is faster, and his skill with the sword itself is probably much higher due to having served (presumably) as a royal guard of a warmongering country.

In reality, it'd probably be closer than you'd think. What works in the merit of Snake is that, while Thorfinn is rusty having not seen a proper battle in almost a decade, he was also 12-16 in season 1 and squaring off against monsters like Thorkell and Askeladd. He faced war on a daily basis for the better part of a decade, so combat is ingrained in him. Take into account the fact that his now adult body in its prime is a powerhouse for having worked back breaking daily manual labor, as Thorfinn is now, having gained maturity and calmness in his stance as well, it wouldn't be a stretch to say he's near Askeladd's level (although perhaps not in his prime)

The deciding factor, however, in the end, is guile. Wits. And that is something Askeladd would never lose in. Not to say Snake is a slouch, we see him in the face of overwhelming surprise and presumably the adrenaline of a thrilling fight remain calm and get the situational advantage against Thorfinn to end the duel in the most recent episode. If there was a runner up prize for cleverness, he'd probably take it. Askeladd is just on another level. He will find his win con and he will eliminate any odds of it failing.

Closer than most people would think, but definitely Askeladd - especially if they're shaping up in their prime.

I think what is interesting to note is Thorfinn is no longer blinded by revenge or anger so he is a much better fighter so maybe, just maybe he could beat Askeladd now.

Maybe not righ now because is his first fight in like 5 years. But I think is pretty safe to say that he could.

plus , thorfinn wasn't even trying to kill snake he was barely only trying to keep him away from Gardar
on the other hand , snake wasn't holding back
If it were a proper deathmatch with both of them being armed with weapons
Thorfinn would have killed snake easily

Snake had trouble with an unarmed and rusty Thorfinn that was actively making sure he didn’t mortally wound anyone. Snake isn’t weak but he doesn’t get out of that duel with Thorfinn alive if Thorfinn isn’t actively choosing pacifism. Askeladd also cut straight through a man vertically while he was outnumbered and wounded and not even in his prime. Gonna give it to Askeladd

Not sure yet (I haven’t read the manga). Thorfinn did say that Snake was the fastest opponent he’s versed, but idk if that includes Askeladd bc those fights were always butchered/half-hearted.

At this stage probably Askeladd by a small margin.

Snake was a varangian, while Askeladd just a pirate. I think ya'll are underestimating how powerful Byzantine norse guards were. Snake probably has a lot more battle experience than Askeladd, and having studied battles from across the continent, that gives him a strategical advantage.

Rusty Thorfinn fights on par with Snake without a weapon, Thorfinn could never beat Askeladd hence why Askeladd should win

Askeladd bests good fighters by brain, not brawn. It's difficult to nail which would win without more info on Snake, but I'd say either Askeladd would win, or flee to fight another day. He wouldn't lose.
