It's two different seasons. 09 is the sequel although the airing order can be a bit funky depending on what site you use.

both 2006 and 2009 versions adapts different chapters of LN. You need to watch both if you are planning to watch the movie.

PS: Watch out for endless eight in 2009 version

The anime is slice of life with some fantasy elements through the existence of several characters. For example one character is a robot, one is a time traveler, one is a psychic, and one is literally God. The first season is great, the second season is kind of a drag but please don’t skip any episodes because it is worth experiencing in its entirety, and the movie is amazing and one of the best anime films I’ve seen. I think this show is without a doubt worth watching.

2009 contains the full story in my words and is in the chronological order
the 2006 has less content I'd say and follows the broadcast order
so basically if you've watched the 2006 version you can skip some episodes of the 2009 version

As people said, it's first and second season, but when they released in Japan in 2009, they aired the 1st season rearranged in chronological order and, then, aired the 2nd season, so that's why you might be confused.

KyoAni really made some experimental shit with Haruhi Suzumiya...

I loved the first season and I made the mistake of watching every episode of the endless 8. It ruined the series for me. My advice would be to watch the first and last episodes of the endless 8 arc. I’m getting annoyed just thinking about that arc while typing this. It’s up to you if you decide to watch but trust me on this it’s a complete waste of time to watch every episode of the endless 8.

Anyone that tells you to watch all the episodes of the endless 8 arc just wants you to suffer the way they did. If you don’t believe me look it up, it’s pretty famous for how excruciating it was.

The 2006 season and the 2009 season should be watched together, mixing the episodes in order to watch the anime in chronological order and not fu*k your head up.
That's because the 2009 season is made up of episodes which complete the first season, that skips a lot of the original material in order to mantain the 12 episodes format.

It’s based on the light novels. If you watch it on Crunchyroll or Funimation it’s already the correct watch order. Watch both seasons then the movie. And it continues in light novels if interested in more.

I believe the only way to fully appreciate the movie is to watch The Endless Eight arc in its entirety and I am glad that I chose to marathon it though there are other ways to approach it. Plus even if they did choose to skip around Endless Eight I think that they should watch three or four episodes of it. One at the start, one or two in the middle, and the conclusion to end on. Also why isn’t anything Haruhi related in your anime list?

maybe you didn’t see it when looking in my list. For me personally I look back at the endless 8 as one of my worst anime experiences. It put me off of a show that I absolutely loved. It was hard finishing the rest of the season cause I was so aggravated. Anyway that’s my thoughts on it.

You’re right I missed it, my bad. Also I guess your stance on it is understandable but I found the second season to be one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had watching anime and it’s improved I think with the movie to put it in retrospect.

Believe me I wish that was my experience too, lol. It’s been so many years but I do want to see the movie. I heard it’s really great. I just can’t find where to watch it. I’ll have to order it. I like collecting physical copies anyway.
