SPOILERS if you haven’t seen this season.

So there’s this scene where Armin suggests to Hange and the others that they head for Wall Maria overnight to avoid Titan encounters. It’s a good idea. But now I’m thinking, why couldn’t they have done that for literally every expedition prior to this if they could make it to Wall Maria from Trost in one night as they did in the second part of this season? It makes it seem like lives were sacrificed in every scout expedition when they really didn’t need to be.

I’ve been racking my brain at this one for awhile, but I can’t fully explain it away.

  • Visibility is poor? That ain’t good enough.
  • Some titans can operate a bit at night? Still doesn’t negate how much smaller of a threat they are at night.
  • 3D maneuver gear can’t be used well at night? Disproven in the show by being used at night.
  • Setting up supply points requires more time in the field limiting night expeditions? Maybe that helps a bit, but definitely not enough. Night expeditions should still be common practice.

Does anyone have a really good explanation for this?

Side note: just realized when I came up with idea about supply points that they were able to lift horses over the wall for the expedition this season but for some reason had to go out the west or east gate for the expedition in the first season. Did they just not have lifts yet? Or was the Titan threat at the gates much more minimal in the third season? The latter seems more acceptable to me.

UPDATE: Post 8 is so far the best explanation I’ve seen if you want to see it for yourself.

basically in early aot everyone is stupid apart from Armin cause Armin is the “smart” one.

Isayama is not that smart of a guy to think it all through and write the story.
He just came up with whatever stuff the plot demanded
I love Monogatari Series

1. The discovery of titans not being able to move at night was done fairly recently by Hange around season 1 I believe, but these were only two titans that she tested on. There are all different types of titans, so they don’t know if abnormals for instance could or couldn’t move around, or other titans in general.

2. The point of the expeditions were to explore more of the outside world, there really was not any other point. They had no light outside of the walls to be able to see, so there really wouldn’t be any point of exploring at night without said light source. They could bring torches, somewhat like they did in season 2, but even then it is still really dark. This makes the point of going out to explore pointless. In season 3 part 2 when they are going back to Shinganshina, they had a new light source powered by the glowing rock in the cavern under the church. This now gave them the opportunity to travel at night as they’d be able to see.

Visibility outside is something we take for granted, but with no lights from any cities or villages around, you can hardly see a couple of metres around you, and for a regiment whose purpose is to scout out the world outside the walls, being able to hardly see the tree you’re about to crash into at high speed on a horse is extremely impractical. As well as that, some titans still move at night, and it would be impossible to fight even a few titans if you can’t see and can’t use ODM gear as effectively.
Remember also that most of the scout missions last several days or weeks so you can’t only go out at night.

About the horses, the lifts can only carry a couple of horses at a time so it would take ages to get the whole scout regiment’s horses over using them.

Well, the way he approaches things definitely seems smart’ish. I guess he doesn’t really prove he’s smart until the second half of the first season though. The idea he came up with for sealing the gate at Trost is pretty simple and is more a desperate attempt at saving himself, Eren, and Mikasa. I think the reason why he specifically could come up with that idea and not others was b/c he didn’t view Eren as a threat, not b/c he’s super smart.

In general though, it’s good to check your perspective by realizing that we have the benefit of an onlookers perspective. Something that might seem obvious to us as an audience won’t be obvious to someone in the action. Think of it like when a sports player on the team you like makes a terrible mistake. You lash out in the moment b/c “wtf man! Pass the ball!” But after, you realize you have a birds eye view that let’s you see someone is open for a pass … and that you don’t have to deal with any of the stressors that the player is experiencing in that situation. Fictional shows should be looked at the same way.

Did I mention I’m a diehard fan of Attack on Ttitan? Lol
I point out the example of night expeditions specifically b/c that one actually seems inexcusable. Not the idea of everyone being stupid in all instances except for Armin. Anyone in the world of Attack on Titan could have thought of moving at night.

Firstly expedition missions were to explore the world outside the walls so they had to make bases outside the wall for a longer stay so they need to stay there both in the day and night, so this doesn'tmatter if they leave during day or in night(this is mentioned in a cut scene). They tried to go as far as they can. but after wall maria was breached the goal changed to retake the wall. And after the mission changed to rebuild the gate at wall maria they needed equipment, which slows them down, which they can't take to trost to maria in a single day(hange explains this in the show). But because eren mastered titan hardening they don't need any equipment at all, And just becauseof that they can think that they can surelyretake the wall. (Horse's speed is also mentioned in the cut scenes: both with and without luggage). As for the lifting horses over the wall I think it's a minor plot hole, your argument that there was less titan threat in the 3rd season plus the fact that they were going in the night does satisfy a little but it's still not convincing enough.

Idk about point 2. That seems like BS to me.
Maybe point 1 works. I had thought the necessity of sunlight was included in the classes the trainees went through though. If that is the case, I don’t think point 1 holds either.

Maybe that’s good enough. I really don’t know though. I guess it murks the water enough to where it can’t be determined if it breaks the story.

The horse lifts are still in question though, b/c what’s the difference b/w the first and third season expeditions?

LMAO, yes I most certainly have. I don’t have it memorized though, but I assume they have a map of the region between Maria and Rose at least.

Ayyyy, this one satisfies. I appreciate it. This actually makes me realize that taking supplies over the lifts might make it more cumbersome and time consuming, which would mean spending a long time defending the most dangerous gate. That might just make it a good idea to just go out the side gates instead.

UPDATE: Actually I’m realizing this could be negated by simply starting the expedition just before daybreak when Titans aren’t active. Or maybe that’s in depth enough to where characters in the story might not think of it? Idek lol.

You know, this whole constant debate about plot holes in Attack on Titan b/w haters and fans has made me realize something… explaining why things aren’t plot holes in Attack on Titan to haters is like trying to convince a ultra-right wing conservative to believe in climate change LMAO.

they were able to move at night once they discovered the power of hardened titan skin glowing brightly. they made lamps out of the hardened titan skin used to construct the cavern underneath rod reiss' chapel. before they didnt have means of seeing far in front of them (their only light source was torches using fire which we saw in season 2 weren't that effective)

Its because they didn't have light did they? Light would be so scarce especially in a forest, but when they went in the night this time they has those crystals from eren's titant for light

And titans don't operate in the night

The discovery of titans not operating at night was done recently by hange in s1. In s2 when Reiner and the others were trapped in the castle , there were titans still operating coz of beast titan but they didnt know that. Anyways, from when hange discovered that in s1 till s3 there were no expeditions, if s2 is considered an expedition then it's still can be proven wrong by saying that beast titan was controlling those titans so they couldn't move at night too.

Ok I vaguely remember the details of this season
I guess you're talking about the overnight journey to Shiganshina in S3 P2 so wrong thread btw

1. They didn't have Eren before. And the time they did they travelled during the day and Eren couldn't entirely control his powers either so it was too risky

2. Visibility of daytime was important as they didn't know about the titans are inactive at night fact in the first season. So they had to travel during the day

Edit: I'm dum there's a better reply above

3. It was a super fast (more than normal speed) mission so ofc they reached overnight. It's about 300km so 9-10 hours straight should cut it of the horses are in good condition. I'm not very sure about this theory though

Yeah I've always thought this. Just go out at night and kill a few titans. Eventually they'd all be gone. Aot definitely has some big old plot holes but I don't really care. It's more about the ride.
