Recently I've started watching Gintama and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. I've heard that Gintoki is one of the greatest Shonen protagonists ever, and I also happen to have a lot of friends who One Piece fans and consider Luffy to be the greatest Shonen protagonist. While I haven't gotten to watching One Piece yet, for those of you who have watched both series, whos a better written protagonist: Gintoki or Luffy?

I don't dislike Luffy, but he's pretty average as a protagonist imo. Gintoki is better written

Both are one dimensional and loved only because they are funny. They don't get any development. But Gintoki is better because he is a bit serious at times.

Gintoki vs Luffy? WEAK!

Naoya from Kanojo mo Kanojo can easily take on all of the Z Fighters, Saitama, the entire DC and Marvel Universe, and still have more than enough strength left over to destroy the universe.

Both characters are hilarious. But I've watched Luffy whole more. So yeah, it'll be Luffy.

Gintoki has a more interesting backstory that adds more to his personality. As the show goes on we learn more about Gin as a person from his past and current actions. His character journey already started before the show.

Meanwhile I would say Luffy's backstory is pretty minimal, and he basically starts his character journey at the very start of the anime.

pretty much everything else comes down to personal taste.

I have only read few chapters of OP and Luffy is nothing special up until that point so GOATOKI For me.
