Did we ever have this discussion? I’m noticing anime fans dating back from the early 2010’s writing posts talking about how the anime from the 2000’s isn’t really that great.

Is this true, or is it a generational thing?

I have watched way more stuff that is from the 2010s than the 2000s so I’m a bit biased but I’d go with 2010 and upwards

I don't care when it released but 2010's anime is better in term of quality.

If we're looking through mal eye's then I'll judge off the top rated. And yeah, the majority of the top 10 including sequels are 2010+

If I had to pick a 10 year period, it would probably be 2006-2015 or 2004-2013 so it’s pretty close but I’m going to go with 2000s since I think 2006 was the best year for anime

2010s was the the year anime grew in popularity to a pretty mainstream level. Also the volume of anime released in those years has provided enjoyment to all types of viewers.

Well, if I just go comb through my Top 20 list, 9 are from the 2000s decade whereas only 7 are from the 2010s decade (with the remaining four being from the 90s, 80s, and 70s).

Expanding it through my Top 35, it's 6 more from the 2000s bringing its total to 15 and 8 more from the 2010s, bringing its total also to 15 (and one more from the 90s to fill out the whole list).

15 from 2000s, 15 from 2010s, 3 from 90s, one from 80s, and one from 70s.

They are completely evenly split numerically in terms of the spaces they occupy on my top rated and personal favorites list.

But I will give an edge to the 2000s, both because:

A) #s 1 - 4 of my Top 5 are all of 2000s origin including my two favorite works of art in all media

and

B) I have more sentimentality, meaning, value, nostalgia, etc. attached to that era. Not in terms of the series themselves. I didn't even start watching anime at all until 2016. But a sense of retroactive nostalgia for the time and space it represents and the aesthetic and certain sensibilities of the period.

2000's hands down.

Not to say 2010's was full of flops but for the sheer amount of growth seen in the industry there should of been way more contenders for phenomenal 2010's shows. Yet the amount is more or less on par with 2000's.

Also should you even get a vote if you weren't around in the 2000's? lol

Let's be real here! If they thought anime in the 00s wasn't all that good chances are they will think of anime in the 10's, 20's and so for as such too.

For me its indifference. There was good stuff back then and there is good now.

In they "eyes of MAL" clearly the 2010s because of recency bias. The 2000s have the shift from 4:3 to 16:9 and lack the crisper art style the 2010s can offer courtesy of massive advances in CG and image post-processing.

Content wise, the 2000s have more diversity in themes and a funding model which was in favor of 26 episode shows. This allows for more niche anime and better world building and character development. The 2010s bring the one cour culture we have today, and this puts ugly requirements such as "cour finale" and uncertainty about a sequel on writers.

Being more a story driven than an animation driven anime consumer, my personal pick are the 2000s. Me loves my "wtf-Japan" moments, and I find more of them in that decade. But in the end it's a matter of subjective taste. The limiting factor in all decades was creative talent anyway, good directors and writers never grew on trees.
