What do you think of Emilia now?
| First off I want to clear something up to the people who will inevitably say "Doesn't matter dude, imagine caring about favorites lmao" Yes, favorites don't matter, but that also doesn't matter and I don't care, I will make this thread regardless. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A year ago before season 2, Emilia wasn't even in the top 50 favorite characters in MAL, and the day S2P2 came out she was at 30k favorites, in only 4 months her favorite count nearly doubled, currently at a respectable 57k, although I can see some of it being from bots, there is no doubt that people's perspective of Emilia has changed due to Season 2 Part 2 where she finally got her time to shine and her character having to develop so much, if you would ask what people thought of Emilia a year ago or even before S2P2, people would say she's an emotionless doll, generic waifu bait and standard one-dimensional FMC, etc etc, but that has changed a lot due to S2P2, she's at a 57k favorite count, still rapidly increasing, currently 19th highest, and 4th highest for female characters, inching closer and closer to Mikasa from AoT and might become the 3rd female character in a month or two. What do you think about this? and not just about the favorite count but also about Emilia as a character, do you think she has improved a lot over the course of Season 2? Or do you feel she was still the same as before? Regardless, all opinions are welcome of course, don't just attack people just because they don't have the same opinion as you.(Looking at some of my fellow Re:Zero and particularly, Emilia fans, please don't make a war.) |

| Not so sure of how to respond to this. I have to say that the anime hides a lot of subtleties to her character in comparison to the WN (or LN). There's a lot more strange circumstances around her behaviour and what possibly goes through her head. Speaking from the anime alone, I do think she has somewhat grown as a character because her past, a portion of it rather, shed more light regarding her behaviour and motivation. I'll wait for her development in later arcs to come to a more grounded conclusion. So far, I'm happy with how she's presented in Arcs 5 and 6. Naturally, there's far more interesting stuff regarding her in the novels which makes me appreciate her even more than I did in the anime. It is probably Tappei being too careful around letting out details about her character, for reasons known only to him. The details are well hidden in the WN/LN but almost non-existent in the anime. Time will only tell how the anime shapes things up later on. I don't know what classifies as 'generic' waifu bait, as I typically hold that for characters who act like a total yes-sir around the main character. Emilia did not and does not showcase any of that to me. |

| YOU HEARD THAT REM FANS? FUCK REM, EMILIA SUPREMACY! All jokes aside thats great. She deserves it because of the development she got throughout season 2 which made her my favorite Re:Zero character. Although I wouldn't put her in my favorites, because although she is a great character, my favorites are only for my waifu's, characters I can relate to, or characters I consider special. Emilia hasn't reached any of those yet and I doubt she will, but still a very great character. |

| To be honest, Emilia from season 1 wasn't very special to me. She's a good character, but that was just that. But then when season 2 (including p2)was airing, she's becoming more interesting. I saw her character being improved throughout the second season. I like her more than she was in the first season. I think that her development improved a lot. |

| When I watched season 1 of Re:Zero, I really liked the show. It was pretty good but wasn't quite in my top shows. It's when I read Arc IV of the web novel that I really fell in love with the story and its characters. Emilia is one of my favourite characters thanks to her story and how relatable she can get. I absolutely love seeing her grow as a character throughout the arcs, as she become more and more active and starts acting less like a child. The thing I dislike the most about her to this day is how she's still quite an airhead. It's perfectly fine not to catch every little detail in some cases because she didn't learn about the subject yet, but sometimes she really acts like an idiot. Even if it doesn't play a big part at all in the show, the story highlights it by plainly saying it out loud and praising this side of Emilia as "cute". I don't know how plain stupidity is cute and I think it's quite a shame to depict it that way. It always gives me that strange feeling that Subaru wants to take advantage of her because of that. It kind of kills a part of the wholesomeness of their relation to me. However, despite of this, I still think she's a very interesting character with some of the best moments in the series. |

If I had to guess, Tappei appears to be rather keen on presenting her from Subaru's POV, with respect to depicting such kind of stupidity as cute. It's at times evident in the way Subaru behaves or responds to her in the later arcs. |

But what the anime failed at and the novels succeeded at in this arc was getting the viewers to give a shit about her character and her relationship with Subaru. Her relationship with Subaru is just ass in the anime honestly especially with that cringe ass confession which was supposed to feel natural and carthartic in the novels ended up feeling awkward and uninteresting. The anime gives the viewers little reason to root for their relationship. Emilia's newfound display of resolve also lacked impact in the anime, being outshined by multiple characters during the climax. Precisely why im gonna read the novel instead lol. |

I can relate to this. While I thought Rie was brilliant in Season 1, she really wasn't it especially in Cour 2. Same thoughts regarding the Roswaal scene. And yeah, the way the anime tackled her arc was very disappointing. I do think Reason to Believe was good, but I don't blame people for thinking it was contrived. All the cuts leading up to it, the weak direction/presentation, all added up to make a scene that would've put From Zero to shame to... an okay one?
