I would also like to point out that Chizuru has repeatedly stopped Kazuya from telling his grandmother and friends that they've broken up, idk why so many people deliberately ignore this. At this point they're equally to blame for the situation. But as soon as he does it, he's the literal devil incarnate. She's not blameless but she is in no way as complicit as he is. And, considering that she's not interested in him and he has to pay her, who cares what she thinks? If he had any backbone he would have ended this farce already. Doesn't matter if she stops him or not, who is paying for it? Who exactly is a pain in the ass? His ex dumped his ass. Instead of fantisising about her with another guy, a man with a spine would get on with his life. His friends don't know anything, he could have gone through with the break up and no one would care. Chizuru is being paid, her opinion doesn't matter, unless, of course, this creep has an ulterior motive. Hes going along with her because he is hoping it will give him a sniff of a chance. He knows he can't ask her out so he is being devious about it. Why else would he listen to the person he is paying? Who's the pain in the ass? His friends and fsmily are why he has such low self-esteem. I think this is it, i think people watch this knowing it’s a romance anime. So they have already elevated Chizuru to the level of actual girlfriend/romantic interest. However from the perspective of Kazuya she isn’t his girlfriend or even a romantic interest. She has made that explicitly clear to him. So his fawning over Mami, a girl he genuinely likes is completely reasonable. I mean, you aren’t supposed to love Kazuya as a character, but he is nowhere near as bad as you people make out when you consider the pressure he is under. Imagine your entire family and friends constantly putting you down as someone who will never get a girlfriend and that your current girlfriend is way too good for you. Then that girlfriend is fake, basically proving their point to him, that he’s not got a hope in hell. He lies through his teeth, and he’s a dick for that. But people ignores WHY he lies about some of those things. Like the initial one with his grandma happened because she kept going on and on about her grandson *finally* getting a girlfriend. | Manga reader here and I think that the main reason for the hatred towards the main character is because of his personality. It's not just him being a simp but also, because he has no actual growth even in the manga, except for the current ongoing arc. Personally, I like these kinds of characters over hyper masculine characters like Taki from Your Name or Sato from Welcome To The NHK or the narrator from The Tatami Galaxy. Here, the character himself is not unlikable but it's because of the way he is presented. However, in the manga his development is better. If Kazuya was presented in a similar way like Ishigami in Kaguya Sama, this anime would have been way better. |
