THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Too many plot holes to give this anything higher than a 6/10-
BUT THEN!
The final fight happened and it was cool, and Shinobu getting hurt and Sara FINALLY admitting that she loves him was great. :)
Then we got that gloriously cheesy mini music video, followed by Shinobu proving he's one of the best mecha action leads around. (YOU BET YOUR ASS HE 'WENT FOR IT' lol)

So it's a 7/10 overall.

By definition, everything is retro since by the time you realize something has happened it's already in the past.

The visuals were great and the the first Dancouga battle was a lot of fun, with that enemy looking as cool as it did (that fucking red lol), but the story was obviously just an excuse to get them back into fighting again. Which would be fine, except the whole scenario was just kinda dumb. Why were supposedly dead people attending the wedding at the end?

Also, it was very unsatisfying not being able to see Sara actually holding and shooting the gatling gun in that one scene. Even just a static shot would have been fine, wtf. And it's not the 80s if they're not in a band somehow.

The good animation and the 16:9 aspect ratio (uncommon in 1980's OVA's) make me think the initial plan was to release in movie theaters. Something made them decide to release in OVA.

Two years later and...

Had to crop it a bit, and even then it doesn't quite work thanks to perspective.
I'll just throw in a cute pic of Sara from the original series to hide the white space.

Loved this show. From what I gather, this is the end and there is no sequel OVA that has Shapiro come back from the dead or anything.

So, nice finisher.
