It's just incredible to read this word about something that is only 20 years old in a ~100 years old domain.

But LOTGH is not 20 but 30 years old tho. Besides, it will get a re-make so it will be modern again. ;)

Please god help me quit this website.

Such great community that doesn't even know how demographics work, AND gives """detailed"""" reviews after first episodes.

Agree legend of galactic heroes is just a downgraded version of battlestar galactica to fatty otakus.

Well @terryacer, let's look at the anime itself:
- Animation/artstyle: Old, but good for its time. The series even had multiple studios working on it, since it was so long. And since the show was so long, you can notice that the animation also improves.

- Music: 'Space Opera', simply that. It fits the show perfectly, and captures the mood of every battle or interaction between characters

- Characters: A solid, big character cast with over 50 characters that all get enough screentime? Now that is just done right. Combine this with a battle between two sides, in which neither is truly evil, and that is simply solid.

- Story: Slowpaced goodness that involves strategies from the past, and events that happened early on in the show. The worldbuilding (or in this case; universe building) is fantastic, and you'll get a good understanding of the story.

This show is more aimed at those that finished many shows, but haven't found something truly great in some time.

After 480 anime entries, I got kinda boring. Finding shows with the same greatness (personal opinion afcourse) as Higurashi & FMAB was very difficult. But, Legend of the Galactic heroes satisfied me with the feeling after all these shows.

Yes totally agree , it is an Unique and very rare anime.
Of course we mean the 1988 version not the very briefed 2018 remake.

1- If you like politics, this anime is the masterpiece. Forget Code Geass or Gundam, this is the real deal.
2- If you like drama, it has one of the best characterizations and interactions between a very big cast.
3- If you like world building, this one has an entire universe bulding with the past history of the universe explained during the course of the series.
4- If you have thirst for blood, you will have plenty of it.
5- If you hate MCs that can survive anything because of plot shield... wait, better not spoil anything.
6- All protagonists and antagonists have a clear and feasible objective. Nobody is evil for the sake of being evil. Being protagonist or antagonist is just a point of view of the watcher, be either the Empire, Free Planets Alliance or the Phezzanis,

The only downside is outdated animation.

i can say your replay already answered everything.

i am not sure if you really want to know whats so great about this anime. in any case, it might me better if you wait a few years before watching the series. this show is probably most enjoyed when you have some maturity related to age. not that its strictly necessary, but in your case it will probably help.

To put it simply the show has good writing, great characters (too many of them, and yet each one gets enough characterization), and the world building is so well done it feels very realistic.
The amount of effort and research put into this series by the writer is impressive, and the animation is pretty good for its age.
Of course the show it not for everyone though, the pacing is very slow and it's about politics, most people would find it boring and hard to get into.
It is however the most mature and well-written anime I've ever seen.

Keep in mind there are a lot of people who appreciate such a piece of art over today's pretty animation, if you're not one of these people it's totally fine you don't have to agree.
Anyway I hope this answers your question.

Because of far right facists on /m/, /a/ and /pol/.

It's a good show, but it's got too many flaws to consider it the best anime of all time. In fact, the best anime ever made doesn't exist, it's all subjective. That's not a grand revelation, that's just a fact, and in my opinion, there's many older shows that deserve more praise then LOGH, which at this point is just a meme.

I like this title but it doesn't blind me to the point of believing that its animation is "good". It is clearly inferior to what the OAV format allowed back when it wasn't just bonus episodes added in magazines or video sets. It's at best comparable to an average TV show.
(not saying "for its age" for its age because it doesn't mean anything, people were able to animate things perfectly well before computer came to help)

If you think I find the animation good because I was blinded, there's no point in discussing anything with you.
Also animation did change a lot, so judging a show's quality based on its age does mean something.

I see you still havent watched this anime based on your ratings

have you given it a try?

the time it took you to read or to reply, you could have finished half of the series and judge it for yourself.

I consider myself a socialist/leftist, and LOTGH is my favorite anime of all time. I get your criticisms of the show, I have come across them before, but I don't agree with them, especially the political aspect of what the show is trying to do. Which I think you have interpreted in your own way.
In any case, threads like this one should be ignored, and all the useless toxic discussion that followed OP's naive question has been quite pointless. LOTGH only has a niche fanbase and it is a show that you will either love or not.
As for why I loved it? I was studying political science and law when I watched it. The characters, their POV's on life, their individual struggle within the political, cultural and social space that determined and governed their lives just resonated with me. I can't think of any other anime that has pulled off the same thing on the scope LOTGH does. Someone ill-informed in this thread casually remarked that LOTGH was a watered down Battlestar Galactica (a show that I surprisingly don't like at all, despite being a science fiction fan). BAttlestar Galactica is nowhere near LOTGH in terms of scope, emotion and depth of characters. I would instead say that LOTGH is 'The Wire' of anime.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, and for good reasons. Just like the Wire, it's not made for everyone.

As fans of LOtGH, we should be careful in promoting the show and only try to encourage people we know might end up liking it. LOTGH is not for everyone. Which is why I don't go around praising it everywhere and recommending it to people. When I recommend anime, I instead go for safer titles, starting with Cowboy Bebop and Death Note, and then depending on the person, I recommend different titles. But I have only recommended LOTGH to 3 people since I saw it back in 2011 I think. or 2012. Can't remember.

Ofcourse I only recommend LOGH to people who have seen 10 or 20 anime series already and/or think that they have experienced majority of things anime has to offer and nothing more can get the m hooked as their first anime.

I am not promoting or encouraging or recommending this series, I am simply asking whether this guy actually watching watched this anime or not. This person has gone out of his way and asked the community about this anime, this person is interested in LOGH already but is also acting somewhat unusual. He could just watch first 10 episodes and decide for himself but rather he is more interested is just debating something which he has no interest of going into for some reason...

Because its a meme like pengu

I think your question is valid. I don't think the OP has actually watched this episode properly (if someone is curious and they feel overwhelmed by the old animation and the large episode count, the best starting point is 'My Conquest is the Sea of Stars' and then 'Overture to a New War'. Watch these two before even thinking about watching the OVA series)

However, I suspect that even if OP gave this series a fair chance, he/she won't like it. Because, cmon, look at his anime list. Really doubt LOTGH is his type of anime.

It's idiotic posts and toxic commentary like this that have driven many lotgh fans away from MAL forums. We see more trolls here on the LOTGH forum than the actual fans now.

'Cuz its a meme!'
so is Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Lord of the Rings. Iconic and epic franchises can create the best memes on the internet. Too bad the same can't be said for utterly forgettable and lackluster anime like Kara no Kyokai.
