Well I have to agree with the fact that navigation is harder, but other than that this is ok. ^_^

You guys shouldn't just rant about it. This is proof that MAL is trying to get better. Support the developer.

Nah. We know how to use them. We just have the intelligence to know when something is crap and shouldn't have been changed for no reason.

QFT, though I'd say "crap" is a bit harsh.

I don't really mind the new navigation since i don't really used the side navigation much.

But what really is annoying is the new HUGE MAL LOGO at the top. if you made it half the size Vertically that would be alright.

Some quick comments:
- popup login looks bad. Maybe the login form should go to the right of the logo, there's a lot of place there (like facebook, at least one thing they did right)
- minimal width of browser window that doesn't make horizontal scrollbars appear, is about 994px. I'd suggest go down with it, at least to 840px (it's eeePc's screen width, isn't it?). Dunno how much work it would take.
- I still don't like the huge shiny logo. And all of these are bad:

http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/bgs/mal-bg-2.jpg

(I adblocked the logo, and the site looks much better with a huge white space at the top. Waiting for a better one)

the sql errors are unrelated to the new layout.... except possibly people telling their friends that it changed is causing a lot of extra load on the db.

Though unusual, I like it. It'll take me some time to get used to, sure, but it's not "bad".

Pros:
-Stylish, and looks less like Facebook now no shit. But still stylish.
-Wider. Wider is better. Always. (This counts as three points?)
-Looks more viable for custom skins (hint, hint...)
-Search button is back. Not that I use it, but it feels more complete this way.

Cons:
-Huge banner. Not showing it on most of the pages will probably work.
-No side bar. A scrolling sidebar would do the job. Or any sorts of it.
-No borders on the top menu? Hard to distinguish and a pain to eyes when it crosses the ads.

Err, if MAL was really trying to get better, it would have fixed its server errors and lag rate and other known bugs in the system before shooting itself in the foot with a massive and most unnecessary layout change.

Need more sidebar - the topbar with dropdowns is really inconvenient.

At first I was surprised, but I know I'll get used to it.
I already can see the advantage of more horizontal space available now for forums and clubs (a lot of people will have to rework personal- and club-profile-pictures).
Also I wholeheartily agreed to the change once I saw it was making use of ajax. With this, customisation on MAL should become really awesome sooner or later. :D

No. I don't like it.

The layout IS nice, but it is harder to navigate which makes it bad imo.

Will take time getting used to but the general look it looks nice. You've still got the simplicity which I loved about MAL but the drop down bar at the top needs work.

One thing I'll poke you about is the use of a huge background. Never liked them. Slows down the time it takes for the page to load. Couldn't you just use a patterned background like a diagonal light scan line on white back? You'd only need to use 10x10 pixels at most since it's on repeat. Pattern background will always rule.

Oh and Widescreen FTW.

ugh... Why the drop down menu's!? side bar is so nice, simple and quick. dropdowns respond slow! not to mention they fall behind the banner on the main page in IE8.

Why change something that wasn't broken? seriously.
At least give people the opportunity to chose between old and new style in their preferences.

How strange. I tried in Firefox and Chrome (with adblock on), and I can still get to the quote function, so I can say that it's probably not that too.

I don't think it's that bad as others said, but it looks somehow "incomplete"... I mean, some features of the old layout are still here while others were changed (like the navigation on top, which is fine for me). I don't really know how to say it, but I feel like it's missing something...

Looking forward to see other skins (and hopefully the possibility to switch to the older version between those skins, if we want), but I think that first it'd be better to try to improve the current one.

Its alright, I guess..... I liked how I could see all my option without haveing to activate a flash menu.... >>.... I actually dont care as long as its easy to navigate. But it seems like there is ALOT less info on the main page..... and its looks boring and plain.

What would be better is if I could have some extra options on my anime and manga list... like avg. user score..... rankings..... description....you know, to see what everyone else thinks. I get tired of looking at each page for a description, score yada yada. Like make the lists flash?? and bubble menus for each entry. But keeping private info and public info separate.

Oh.... custom backgrounds for our panel and profile would be awesome.

Happens if googleapis.com gets blocked some how. Should also have issues responding to comments on your profile, I think.

I tested the new theme on some browsers a bit (excluding FireFox since it's popular and all that):

IE7: No need for ad block, none of the ads load so that's cool, the rest of MAL loads and works fine.
IE8: The menu apparently appear behind the ads, so it's quite hard to use.
Safari 4: Nothing bugged except for the fact it won't ever stop loading.
Opera 10: The drop-down menu's don't work.

Can't really understand all the hate. The new navigation just need a little bit of time getting used to.
Of course issues with some browser need a fix.

Not that I hate it as a whole, there are some things that changed for the better but overall I'd really want the old layout back. (though of course I know that will very unlikely happen)

Now I need to update my dark theme. :v

I'm surprised by the change.

It's great and more spacey with the sidebar gone, yet it will take some time for me to adjust to the new nav.

My only complain about it is that the logo is too big. With my widescreen monitor, it's better if I see more of the page contents without having to scroll down a bit.

Good work, Xinil. I'm sure you still have more in store for this change.

Suggestion: put up at least a simple set of navigational choices someplace which people can choose. So for example to the side or something have just about 3 or 4 slots people can change out what they want from the old navigation.

IE

I want to see Clubs, Profile, Recommendations and MyAnimeList. Someone else might want quicklinks to their MyMangaList, or Blog etc. Anything to make it less... Nueva Livejournal. :(

(PS, I'm not checking this thread, so if you really want to reply, please use PM.)

I have to say I find it very ironic how a community with ultimate IE hatred is viewed pretty damn quick and ad-free with IE7 compared to the other's I tested.

I dunno, looks extremely strange in lower resolutions. The least you could do is specify a min-width for the content wrapper so that when the browser window gets too small the background doesn't go to hell. Despite what people are saying, I use a widscreen but I don't like my windows maximized, and I know I'm not the only one. Putting the logo as part of the background just screams noncompliance. I can't even begin to list all the ways that part could go wrong.

Other than that... Er, gotta admit I like the sidebar more. Might be able to get used to the top navigation, but the delay on hover is a bit too long. I don't mean to offend, but it really looks somewhat unfinished. Plain, even.
