Original FAQ made by @ZeroDragon here ZeroDragon said: Foreword The anime "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works" is not a remake nor a continuation of the "Fate/Stay Night" anime that premiered in 2006. The 2014 F/SN UBW adapts the Unlimited Blade Works route of the visual novel rather closely (though there are still things that were excluded) while the 2006 F/SN was an inaccurate and botched adaptation of the source material (though whether or not it's good as a standalone anime depends on the individual viewer). If you have seen Fate/Zero before starting this show, then please keep an open mind and don't expect to be watching Fate/Zero 2. F/Z and F/SN were written by different authors with different approaches to the stories that are in themselves different in tone and what aspects they focus on, so to expect any of them to be like the other may hinder your full enjoyment. This is what Kinoko Nasu (the author of F/SN and creator of the franchise) told the anime staff prior to the production of F/SN UBW: "This might be a little extreme, but in terms of story and picture, please think of [Fate/Stay Night] as a different thing from Zero. Stay Night’s goals and Zero’s goals are different things. If we were to impertinently connect the two, the story and mood would be ruined. Stay Night and Zero were written by different authors and have different stories, so they must both be respected in such a way." Where do I start? Choose one of these options to get into the series: Anime-only: UBW anime -> HF movies -> Fate/Zero. Go with this order if you want to only experience the Fate series in anime form. However, you won't be getting the complete Fate/Stay Night experience because there is no good anime adaption of the Fate route. The Fate route is mainly Saber's story while also serving as an introduction and worldbuilding route. Although, it's not entirely necessary to read the Fate route first, so if you don't want to take the plunge into VNs, the UBW anime is your next best way to start the series. Intended: Fate route of the VN -> UBW anime -> HF movies -> Fate/Zero. Go with this order if you prefer to experience the series as it was intended with the first route of the VN, and experiencing the rest in anime form. The Fate route is roughly 12 hours long and is the ideal introduction to the series. It also seems like ufotable intends for people to play the Fate route before watching their UBW adaption by advertising that the route is free for smartphones (japan only) at the bottom of their website. It's widely agreed that the VN has a very slow start, but I assure you once it picks up you'll have trouble trying to put it down. Brave: Entire F/SN visual novel -> Fate/Zero -> UBW anime -> HF movies. I recommend this order if you just can't wait at all for the adaptions or prefer to experience F/SN in it's original, uncut form. With the full story being available to you but having to wait until the end of Spring 2015 for UBW to finish, and who knows how long for all the HF movies to be completed, and then finally getting to watch Fate/Zero, I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up going with this order when you originally were following one of the other options. You also get to see how well ufotable adapts the story and don't get to miss out on all the things that were cut. Just be prepared to spend 50+ hours as it is a very long VN, but it's definitely worth every second. Credit for the quote regarding where to start goes to RedShadoww, taken from his awesome guide: vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv http://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/seriesfaq-fate ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^ a source that you will read if you're new to the franchise. READ THE INFORMATION IN THE ABOVE LINK FIRST, then read below for additional Q&A, and then check out the Q&A thread http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1292653 if you still have any questions. F/Z = Fate/Zero F/SN = Fate/Stay Night Subsections: -General (general questions regarding the Fate franchise and the Type-MOON universe) -F/SN vs F/Z (regarding the comparisons between them and the thoughts someone might have after watching Fate/Zero first) -F/SN UBW 2014 vs F/SN 2006 and F/SN UBW 2010 (regarding the comparisons between them and the thoughts someone might have after watching the latter two first) -F/SN UBW 2014 Specific (explanations to questions and thoughts an anime-only viewer might be wondering about after watching up to specific episodes) -Additional Information General Q: There are so many spinoffs. Is there a visual that would help in making sense of the Fate branch of the Nasuverse? A: Credit: ??? Q: I don't feel that any of the three recommended viewing paths are a good fit for me. A: While ultimately everyone can do as they please, it's fact that Fate/Stay Night (and naturally it's story) is the original source material. Fate/Zero was made AFTER Fate/Stay Night and its plot makes it very evident that it assumes the viewer has knowledge of F/SN. Additional discussion regarding the reasoning behind watching F/SN before F/Z and other works in the Fate franchise and can be found in the following thread: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1234355 Q: What are the Heaven's Feel movies? A: http://myanimelist.net/anime/25537/Fate/stay_night:_Heavens_Feel Heaven's Feel is the third and final route of Fate/Stay Night and will be adapted as one or more movies. Q: I read only the Fate route of the visual novel, and I wasn't too fond of Shirou. Is he different in UBW and HF? A: Yes. Shirou's reasoning and decision making changes across each route. He's most idealistic in Fate. Q: [Insert character here] barely had any screen time, yet they were just barely introduced in this show or had played a role in F/Z??? A: Every route gives a different amount of focus to each character (not counting Shirou since every route is from his perspective). So, if you find that one character didn't have as much of a role in UBW as you'd like, then they'll most likely have a larger or even central role in the Fate and/or HF routes. F/SN vs F/Z Q: F/SN has teenage protagonists. Is this less mature than Fate/Zero? A: Debatable, but it's best to just keep an open mind and see how the plot unfolds before you judge. Don't write off something just because there's a high school and teenagers until you actually know the plot. Q: Is this less dark than F/Z? A: Debatable. This could be more or less depending on your tastes. HF is the generally considered the darkest of the three routes. Q: Why doesn't F/SN introduce all of the masters at the beginning like F/Z did? A: F/Z has an ensemble cast whereas F/SN is focused on a smaller group of clear protagonists. You'll be introduced to the other masters as the story continues. Q: I watched F/Z already. Did I screw myself over? A: The shock factor from numerous revelations will be gone, but instead you can still enjoy the anticipation of when the characters discover those revelations and also enjoy the foreshadowing that you manage to notice. F/Z and F/SN episode zero (prologue) spoiler: Q: Why does this Archer look different than the one in F/Z while Saber is still the same? Aren't the heroes supposed to be different? A: The Fate route explains the reason why the same person was summoned as Saber, though it may or may not be explained in this UBW adaptation. She's an anomaly in terms of the typical summoning. F/Z and F/SN episode zero (prologue) spoiler: Q: This Lancer looks like the one in F/Z. Are they the same person? They both have a red spear??? A: They're two different people. Q: I watched F/Z and so far they haven't really told us anything we didn't already know. Why is that? Q: Why are Fate fans strongly recommending against watching F/Z before experiencing the story of F/SN? A: Keep in mind that F/Z was a prequel made after F/SN. As well as F/Z might have done in getting newcomers up to speed, F/SN is a standalone story so it doesn't and can't make the assumption that everyone has already seen F/Z beforehand if it's to be faithful to the source material. Essentially this question is akin to watching a remastered version of the original Star Wars trilogy and asking why it explains things that you already know from watching the prequel trilogy or why it may appear to have a different feel or tone. Follow up Q: But I watched F/Z first and I swear they're treating this anime as a sequel to it. Just look at all the references! A: Many of the references that you see were already present in the original source material, though this anime plays them up more or less. They only appear to be references because they were the pieces of information used in creating F/Z. The other references were added in by Ufotable for this show as an acknowledgment that F/Z exists and that many viewers had already seen it. However, as good of a prequel that F/Z was and no matter how well it flows into F/SN, the fact remains that F/SN's story is standalone and was written first, and F/Z was meant to be complimentary material that goes in depth regarding the past that F/SN refers to. It's ok if you watched F/Z first, but don't act like it was the intended starting point of this franchise as it will spoil numerous things in F/SN (in particular the Heaven's Feel route which will be made into a movie or series of movies). Additionally, here is an excerpt from the end of Volume I of the Fate/Zero light novel (in spoiler tags to reduce clutter) F/SN UBW 2014 vs F/SN 2006 and F/SN UBW 2010 Q: Shirou is still the main character. Is he annoying like in the 2006 adaptation? A: Again, the 2006 adaptation butchered many aspects of F/SN, especially Shirou's character. Q: How much does the previous UBW movie adaptation by DEEN spoil this anime? A: DEEN's UBW movie is essentially a brief summary of this anime and is mainly just action scenes with little context. You'll end up spoiling the plot for yourself without actually understanding much of it due to the lack of context and rob yourself of the full experience. Where can I find additional discussion regarding F/SN 2006 vs F/SN UBW 2014? A: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1299915 Related (posted on the F/SN 2006 forum): http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=635739 Spoilers up to episode two: Q: I watched the original 2006 anime adaptation and so far this adaptation doesn't seem to be much different. Why is that? A: The visual novel's three routes don't start branching apart until the third day in the story. As the anime up to this point (episode two) has covered the first three days of the story, you can understand why things are almost the same. However, at the end of episode one Shirou stops Saber from attacking Archer. That was actually the point in the visual novel when UBW diverges from Fate. Yes, either way she takes him to see Kirei at the church as seen in episode two, but from here on things will be different. Even though they still fight Berserker, it'll play out differently. F/SN UBW 2014 Specific Spoilers up to episode three: Q: In the fight, why didn't Archer just target Ilya instead of targeting Berserker? Surely a servant could easily kill a little girl??? A: There have been numerous discussions regarding this in the Episode 3 discussion topic: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1295325. In particular, the discussions between the pages 19-23 and 35-38 should provide adequate explanations. Spoilers up to episode four: Q: I don't like the way that Shirou has been acting. Will he change? Is this just the result of bad characterization? As a whole, F/SN is the exploration and deconstruction of the idealistic heroic protagonist, with the Unlimited Blade Works route critically questioning those ideals. Up to this point, there have already been hints that something is off with Shirou. Rin continuously facepalms at his actions, Issei had pointed out that he's vulnerable to be taken advantage of, Ayako had said that it appears as if he never smiles and it was immediately followed with a fiery flashback, and another flashback had given us a glimpse of Shirou's tragic past. Shirou's current attitude, regardless of whether you agree with it or not, is not a result of ignorant writing but rather an intentional setup that will later be critically examined in this anime and in the Heaven's Feel movie(s). Spoilers up to episode five: Q: What's up with the retreat of Rider during her fight against Shirou? Why didn't she just kill him? A: She was actually testing him, goading him into using his command seal. This is only directly revealed in the choice during this scene that leads to the bad end (see http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1296051 for the "Spider's Captive" bad ending for episode five). The reason for this can be implied based on what is revealed in Heaven's Feel. Spoilers up to episode ten: Q: What's the deal with Shirou's counterattack? How did he suddenly project Kanshou and Bakuya in the fight against Kuzuki? A: The visual novel indicates to the readers in the Fate route and early in UBW that Shirou does possess the ability to project things. However, this wasn't made obvious in the anime, though it is alluded to just enough that it shouldn't be considered an asspull. -In episode four, Shirou dreams of being in a wasteland filled with swords. -In episode six in the shed with Saber, while practicing strengthening magic he says "My luck is a lot better with bladed tools like this." and takes out a pocket knife. -In episode seven after the credits, there is an implication of Shirou's fascination with Archer's swords. So far, we know that he has an affinity with swords. He dreams of swords and thinks about them, and he has better luck strengthening them. -In episode eight, he dreams of a wasteland of swords again and his body starts turning into swords. During the discussion with Rin at the rooftop, he says "I tried different kinds but that's(reinforcement) is the only thing I can do". We're being shown yet again that this guy absolutely has a thing with swords. We're also told that he does have experience (albeit very little, but still experience nevertheless) in trying other types of magic. This sets the foundation for any other type of magic we may see him use in the future. -In episode ten, Shirou's fascination with Archer's swords is reaffirmed. After Caster retreats: Rin:"I thought reinforcement was the only magic you could do." Shirou:"It is but projection was the first magic I succeeded at...But I could only mimic the exterior of things, inside they were always hollow....Kiritsugu said it was useless so I should focus on reinforcement." Rin:"True I would have said the same thing." And now we know that projection was one of the things he was referencing when he told Rin on the rooftop that he tried other types of magic. Even though his projections were sufficient enough this time, he considered his attempts in the past to be failures (and hence considering himself to be unable to do it) since he couldn't properly project them. How come he was able to partially succeed this time and not before? This will be explained later. As for why Shirou was fascinated with Archer's swords, here is a quote fromt he visual novel: "They only confront each other for a short while. They attack each other with amazing techniques. I'm fascinated by the scene. To be honest, I can't understand Assassin's technique. Even to my experienced eyes, it's way too fast and too sharp. But, that's why I'm fascinated by "his" technique. The dancing twin swords. Archer is defending Assassin's incomprehensible attacks with a technique I might be able to acquire. ... To be honest, you could say I admire it. He is fighting off Assassin's demonic technique with techniques only trained by his will and not his natural talent. ...Damn, it's natural that he's strong. Strength unlike Tohsaka or Saber. All the training he went through because he's not extraordinary... He probably had nothing. That's why he took the small thing he had, trained it with all his might, and got it to that level--" Spoilers up to episode ten: Q: Why doesn't Rin bring Archer with her? She keeps leaving him at home. Is she stupid? A: Remember that Archer has done the following: -He almost caught Saber in the blast from his attack against Berserker. He could sense magical beings, yet he timed it when Saber (the servant of his master's ally) was right next to Berserker and didn't give Rin enough time to warn anyone of his attack. He also smirked at the end which indicated ulterior motives. In a alter episode, Shirou even points out to Archer that he remembers him doing that with a tone implying that it may have been on purpose. -He let Caster go when he could have killed her. Sure he had said that he wanted to use Caster to take out Berserker, but his reasoning went against both the ideals of his master and her ally. -He nearly kills Shirou after confirming that he was insistent on his ideals. There's also a reason why Archer didn't go all out in his attempt kill Shirou, but that's a different issue. After all of the above happens, there's no way Rin would want to keep Archer close to Shirou as it would weaken her beneficial alliance with him. She believes that her alliance with Shirou is more important than the safety provided by her own servant, though Shirou also has a strong servant so she believed the risk was worth it. But also, she feels that all of these actions indicate that Archer has been behaving very weird. Why does her servant continue to antagonize (and even attack) her ally? Why does her servant insist on acting rebellious? She notices that something is definitely off about Archer, because someone in a "normal" state of mind wouldn't make such counterproductive actions. As an analogy, just think about how you would feel you had a friend who kept on insisting to bring her friend along whenever the two of you hung out, except you and him absolutely hate each other and he even deliberately injured you within the last couple of days. Now imagine yourself in a deadly battle royale and the only person you can trust is this friend of yours. Would you want this asshole to be near you, even if he is suddenly made unable to kill you? I mean he could keep on trying to annoy you or hinder your survival in numerous indirect ways. Your alliance with your friend may steadily degrade to the point that you might feel that it's better to go on your own. -In episode ten, Archer tells Rin to forget her alliance with Shirou and to ally with Caster. Yeah, something is DEFINITELY off with Archer. What's his deal? What are his true motivations? Why is he so antagonistic against Shirou? Just what exactly is he doing and where is he trying to go with all of this? Spoilers up to episode ten: Q: How did a human (Kuzuki) manage to overpower a servant? This is breaking the established rules. A: Or so you would think. Servants are supposed to be much more powerful than humans, and they actually are obviously, but with a match up between a particular human and a particular servant in certain conditions with certain strategies utilized, it is very possible for a servant to lose. There are at least four fights throughout all three routes that demonstrate this. Kuzuki had his speed and the strength of his fists greatly enhanced by Caster's magic (of which Archer had mentioned in the past was almost on the level of true magic, which even to someone who hasn't read the VN, the fact that the word "true" was necessary to use would imply that it's very powerful magic), and he had been trained to use a fighting style that confused the opponent and made attack patterns as unpredictable as possible in the first encounter. In addition to this, Saber had underestimated him (Kuzuki even mentioned that) and as a result was caught by surprise (pointed out by Rin). Using his greatly enhanced speed and strength in the brief moment after blocking Saber's underpowered attack, he managed to overwhelm her in her short moment of lowered defense due to said surprise. Once Saber got back up, his element of surprise was gone and there was no way he could win against a servant that knew what to expect from him. In the visual novel, Caster doesn't prepare an attack during their retreat and Kuzuki explicitly states that Saber wouldn't fall for his attack a second time. Spoilers up to episode ten: Q: So that retreat... Why didn't Kuzuki stop Caster from using her attack in mid-air after rescuing him? Why did they even retreat? A: Due to the reasons stated in the answer to the question above this one, Kuzuki was now essentially rendered a liability to Caster. While she could have continued attacking Saber, what if Saber had a counterattack ready that was in the same vein as Archer's counterattack against her (the one that nearly proved fatal for her)? If she were to be hit with something like that with her master on her, things would not have looked good for them. Kuzuki was being calculated and cautious in telling Caster not to be reckless and withdraw. It can be implied that he didn't want to risk any unnecessary further injury or fatal counterattacks when they could simply escape and live to fight another day. Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: Shirou used all of his command seals. Does this mean that either way he wouldn't have been Saber's master any longer? A: No. Command seals are used to ensure that a servant carries out a particular order whether or not they agree with it (though its exact power to compel is influenced by multiple factors such as the mage's power and the broadness and longetivity of the order), and may allow them to do things that are normally beyond their ability (for example, being able to arrive at a master's side immediately without any delay due to travel time. Shirou wouldn't have been able to force Saber to do anything against her wil, but as they had a good relationship, Saber would have continued to serve under her master. Servants who have bad relationships with their master may completely disobey or even kill their master if the master runs out of command seals. Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: Just what exactly is that Noble Phantasm used by Caster? A: Rule Breaker is able to nullify and dispel magic, including the contact between masters and servants. Though it's a dagger, it's brittle and only effective when used as an anti-magic noble phantasm. Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: How did Caster get command seals? A: Caster had lived in a time that was known as the Age of Gods, a time where divine spirits were more prevelant in the world and magecraft (basically "magic" that can be explained and understood within the rules of the world) was much closer to True Magic (basically "magic" that cannot be explained and are considered to be miraculous). Due to her abilities (remember that Archer had stated that her magic was almost an imitation of True Magic) and that of Rule Breaker, she is able to transfer contracts (and renew them in the process) and command seals over to herself. Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: Why did Shirou stop Saber from attacking Caster? Is he stupid? A: Shirou was the only one of the three to have seen a good extent of Caster's power, and knows that they're in her mercy as long as they're within her boundary field. That's in addition to the fact that Caster still held Taiga hostage with the threads. Even though they might have appeared to be loosening, they were still around Taiga, and Shirou was afraid that Caster might decide to kill her in retaliation for Saber's assault. If Saber had attempted to attack the threads instead of Caster, then Caster could have easily killed Taiga as soon as the attempt began. If Saber hadn't intervened, Shirou would have lost his arm. Either way, Shirou stood to lose something very important to him. Q: Ok, so why exactly is Taiga so important? A: Taiga's grandfather pays for and oversees the land that Shirou lives on, and Taiga herself is a big sister figure to Shirou and looked after him after Kiritsugu's death. So yes, she's kind of a big deal to Shirou. Keep in mind that it's (Spoiler up to episode 12) unrealistic to expect characters, much less people in reality, to easily sacrifice a loved family member or friend over the FEAR that not doing so COULD POSSIBLY result in the deaths of numerous other people. Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: But Shirou knew the risks coming into this war. He should have been ready to sacrifice the few for the many if necessary, shouldn't he, and wouldn't that contradict his ideals of saving everyone? A: It's one of the core themes of F/SN. You are Shirou Emiya. On the right, the sister figure whom you have been very close to for years and who essentially raised you after your adopted father's death. On the left, an ancient hero who has sworn her utmost loyalty and devotion to you and who without you would certainly lose the Holy Grail War. You must choose between saving one dear to you or the continuation of your ideals to save everyone. You select the option on the right, and thus your option on the left begins to fall into question and scrutiny within you. Have your ideals been completely broken? Are the ideals still worth pursuing as much as realistically possible? Should those ideals have been completely favored instead? Should the sacrifice of one be favored if it will save many, or is it better to indiscriminately sacrifice the many if the one is deemed important enough? What is the correct decision? What is the correct way to go about carrying out that decision? Spoilers up to episode 12 Q: Near the end of the episode, what's the bird and who did it belong to? A: It was a familiar created by Rin and was sent to spy on Caster. Additional Information Q: What are the attributes, class abilities, skills, and noble phantasms of the servants that are shown in this anime? A: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1287299 Q: Despite all of the introductions and explanations presented in the early episodes, I'm still confused. A: Things get will be explained at the appropriate time, just as most stories do. Stories present mysteries and information at the beginning which are then unraveled and explained as the plot progresses. But if you find that over time those questions aren't being answered, you could ask in a separate topic or check out Type-Moon's wiki. Q: What does Type-Moon think of the DEEN adaptations? A: http://images.sgcafe.net/2014/09/large__20140926234040ca7.jpg Note that the Fate/Zero anime was included in the timeline. I think it speaks for itself. Q: I have more questions. Where are good places for me to ask? A: While you could create a new topic on here or ask in some other topic (however this could potentially lead to its derailment), here's a conveniently designated place for Q&A: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1292653 There's also the Fate/Stay Night subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/fatestaynight/new/ Q: Where can I find more information on Type-Moon's works? A: http://typemoon.wikia.com However, be very careful of spoilers. Closing Words Lastly, if you are genuinely interested in truly experiencing or learning why Fate has received as much hype as it has, you will have to read the visual novel no matter how close this adaptation may be as there are numerous details and inner thoughts that have been excluded. @Tyrel can you please sticky this? Can provide help who only just heard about the Series and looked here first instead of ubw subforum. |

What's your problem? What do you mean by that? I have no problem with you bar the grievances I stated above. I won't even bother. Your whole post makes no sense. Come back when you can type coherent English. |
