I'm looking for some singeplayer JRPGS that I can just get lost in. I do not care about replay value as I don't replay anything.

I want the games to be somewhat like The Last Remnant, the whole 3d open world free roam thing. However if the game is just that good then I can forget about that haha.

I have also never played a Final Fantasy game so i'm kind of new to this stuff!

Final Fantasy X/X-2 should be good (remaster of 10 and 10-2)

edit: haven't played last remnant, but i does look a lot like the dynastie warriors series (not a rpg)

Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy XII, and Nier should be very useful to you in terms of great RPGs with large open worlds.

Also while they don't fit your criteria, The World Ends With You and Solatorobo: Red the Hunter I think are really brilliant RPGs. Feel free to ask for details on why if you need more information about any of these.

You can find a few decent titles in my old thread here http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1112265&show=0

Tales of Zestiria is coming out today (just waiting for courier), but do you preffer action or turn based combat?

Trails in the Sky is in fact pretty badass, the sequel was supposed to be translated this year but it's taking more time than it should.
There is also Trails of Cold Steel - different setting but some simmilarities - coming out next month.

As for some big shots I'd say: Xenogears, Mana Khemia (if you like crafting), Persona (it depends on what you like but you would probably be better off starting with P3 or P4 if you are new to the genre) Chrono Trigger/Cross (time travel/alternate dimenions, Wild Arms (if you like wild west setting), Star Ocean (except for Last Hope which was shit), Koudelka/Shadow Hearts series (if you preffer a more dark horroresque climate), Fate/Extra (dungeon crawl).
Take your pick :D

Trails in the Sky was good.
Dragon Quest V also had a good story starting from the protagonist's childhood.
I also recommend the Disgaea series, anything you can get is good but I recommend the first one.
ZHP Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman has good humor like Disgaea and probably the only game (afaik) that started and ended on the same battle.

Dragon's Dogma (available on PS3 and Xbox 360 and come January, PC) is Japanese but has way better action and gameplay than any WRPG if that counts.

You people haven't mentioned Lunar or Grandia yet?

I hate you, all of you.

Oh and Parasite Eve, that game always gets overlooked.

Also to all of you asking which system. It doesn't matter, Although I am hoping to find atleast one steam game I can play on my PC.

Grandia II is on Steam, although I would put it on hold forwhile before buying it if I were you. Apparently the devs did a terrible job at porting it and are currently trying to patch it up to the best of their abilities with the rest of the comunity.

From the lists of ther people I see Final Fantasy IV and VII, I also see Shining Force and Phantasy Star IV for cheap.

In my library the ones I can recommend are Recettear (Don't know how the hell did I forget about that one), One Way Heroics and perphaps Pier Solar and the Great Architects although I'm not sure if I would dare to call the last one a JRPG as it isn't Japanese.
