And we begin to draw back the curtain on Yasuda Sayo… Shannon, Kanon, and Beatrice.

For the most part this fleshes out a framework that had been revealed before, but it does so well. It's Sayo's narrative, told from Sayo's perspective, and while it lacks in depth afforded to the other characters, this is justified by the point-of-view and the time spent prior developing the cast.

It does seem that Genji, Kumasawa and Nanjō always thought of Sayo as Lion, and were unprepared for Sayo's (sane, human) reaction to their conspiracy and the circumstances of "Lion"'s birth and life. This does reconcile their actions some with clearer motivation, but it's still difficult to sympathize with.

That is one aspect I have come to find both fascinating and wearisome about Umineko: the contributions by each individual character to the tragedy and the abusive environment of the Ushiromiya family. Everyone is in some way to blame for the atmosphere in which this is the final result.

Almost two years after finishing the VN, and Umineko still moves me to tears. The confession of the witch is one of the most gutwrenching parts of the story, and the manga truly enhances the Umineko experience a lot!
