interlude —Hachijō Ikuko—

Hachijō Ikuko's entire character is anomalous to such a pointed degree I have to question which layer of reality we've recessed to. Her storyline, here, is a thread of seeming coincidences in which she steps into the story as an amateur mystery novelist of independent wealth who happens to find Battler, who happens to have survived the Rokkenjima Murders (in the same "real world" timeline of survivor!Eva and piece!Ange [or maybe only one of those? how many are there?]), but happens to have amnesia, so she nurses him back to health in her manor whilst bringing him in on her mystery-writing hobby/future career, until she happens to find the MESSAGE BOTTLE OF "CONFESSION" and stirs his recollection!

It is an impressive feat that Hachijō has been established in such a way beforehand I am not compelled to dismiss all of this as insane contrivance. But due to her association with Featherine, whom we can understand to be capable of arranging all of this for the sake of her own interests, I can grant these… convenient turns in the story. I do wish they were a bit better told, though; this chapter reads most as setup for Hachijō/Featherine and "Tōya"/survivor!Battler, whatever their eventual payoff will be.

And Cat!Bern still bothers me.
