| Today I received the Urusei Yatsura OAV Blu-Ray box set. It is from Warner Japan, #1000544333, 1080 HD, 4:3 aspect ratio, 344 minutes on three discs. The set also came with two collector key holders – little stars with Lum and Ataru on them. The list price on the box is Y17,400. I got it at a big discount from Amazon Japan. All 11 of the original OAVs are in the set. I checked out two of the OAVs this afternoon. The colour and sound are superb. The general visual quality is much better than on the TV series Blu-Ray set. I guess that there were better masters available for putting the OAVs on Blu-Ray. It's been almost 20 years since I watched the UY OAVs and at that time I had them on the Animeigo VHS tapes. So it's hard for me to believe how good the OAVs really look. UY is UY, and Takahashi is Takahashi. Every time I rewatch any of the UY shows I realize again why this series has remained my favourite anime series over the past 20 years. Nothing else Takahashi has done since has grabbed me in the same manner. Now I am looking forward even more to the UY movie Blu-Ray box set that is being released in June. |
