^I forgot all about him. How excellent a performance!

Wow, where has this thread been all my life? Love you guys!

This anime largely uses hard bop/funk tracks in its OST, which well complement its suspense and complexity.

I feel out of place to be posting this since I am more into upbeat Jazz songs. I will post it anyway! I just discovered this band like minutes ago and currently going through my first listen of their album. I like it so far.

Another band I found. Their colored noses are so weird. I love the fast paced piano playing though!

YES, fellow JAZZ lovers! Good to meet every single one of ya! I played the alto saxophone in my school's jazz band (hell, the concert and marching bands too). Sadly, I haven't played much for a few years, but I love listening to the legends. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, The Bill Evans Trio, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, The Thelonious Monk Quartet. Don't forget Ella Fitzgerald, the most beautiful jazz singer of all time.

I'm glad I finally clicked on this thread. I love old jazz and blues, and there is a lot of great stuff here.

Going back to the post that started this thread, I haven't heard of Ben Berlin, but I have encountered some of the music of Germany from the time period between the two World Wars. There was some great music in Germany before Hitler ruined everything. I do, however, know that song. Paul Whiteman recorded it at about the same time.

In the 1920's, Whiteman was extremely popular in the United States, and thanks to his popularity, he was able to hire some great musicians for his band, although thanks to the idiotic racial segregation of the time, he was limited to white musicians. His style ran the gamut from mellow pop music to hot jazz. "Roses of Yesterday" falls into the mellow category.

And here is a famous hot number by Paul Whiteman's band, "Mississippi Mud." Please note that elements of the lyrics are considered offensive by today's standards, but back in 1928, such lyrics would not have bothered many people.

Now back to Germany... Here is some good Weimar Republic jazz - Teddy Kline - "I'm Doing What I'm Doing for Love" - 1929.

Some good jazz musicians remained in Germany after Hitler took over, but they faced increasing difficulties. However, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels found a use for them; he organized a big band to broadcast over short wave to allied forces. The band is good, but the propaganda lyrics are so bad that they are funny. Please note that these are Nazi lyrics, so it goes without saying that they are bound to be offensive. It is, however, a fascinating piece of history, so it is worth a listen.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

^That's some pretty cool info.

Some of you might not care, but here's a pretty cool live version of the Cowboy Bebop opening I found.

Dat sax solo.

I'm sorry, but that video...

is too freakin cool, thanks a ton for posting it.

Take Five by Dave Brubeck. Instantly recognizable and over used by NPR and other stations as background noise, but I love it.

Very interesting post here (as expected from you). It was really worth reading and listening to.

Anyway, I'm currently going through a Herbie Hancock phase.
I know several of his standards (the ones you will find in the Real Books, and some of his best known albums like Head Hunters or Future Shock) but it's actually the first time I dig into his discography in detail, and I have to say there is some very very good stuff.

Now that I think about it, don't quote me on that, but I think Herbie Hancock and George Duke shared a somewhat similar style and musical path.

Also, while I love all kinds of jazz, the truth is I'm really more a fusion guy than anything else. Not specifically Jazz Fusion, but just when jazz elements like rich chords and improvisations are mixed with funk elements, classical, electronic, chiptune, light/concert music or anything else... So it can be anything, really, it just need to be full of rich harmonies.

(and many others...)

I'm also quite a lot into modern jazz, and we've got some very great stuff this year. From the jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington's "epic" first album :

(These chords at the beginning are so McCoy Tyner-ish, omg)

To Laura Perrudin's jazz harp, intimate, poetic and sophisticated musical world :
