What's the best Frank Zappa Bootleg?
emptycell Jul 25, 2015 1:10 AM
That orchestra hit simple seems very prominent in 80's pop music; this may be why I never noticed it in music since I don't listen to 80's pop. My parents dragged me to one of their friend's parties (where they played A LOT of 80s music), and I definitely heard the orchestra hit several times.

No problem, let me know what you think of them!
I sure hope so! That would be really cool. Maybe I'll be a musician on the side as well; perhaps I could be a guitarist in an avant-garde ambient noise drone progressive shoegaze post-rock jazz fusion band? :P

I listened to "Out to Lunch" several times; I actually really liked it! I'd say that at the moment it's my favourite jazz album alongside "A Love Supreme" and "Hot Rats". I particularly enjoy the tracks 'Hat and Beard' and 'Gazzelloni'.

I'm finally taking the time to listen to two artists I should have listened to more of a long time ago: Beefheart and Zappa. And wow. I really liked "Ice Cream for Crow"; I liked it as much as "Safe as Milk", maybe even a bit more. Definitely going to be listening to that album a lot these next few weeks. :)
Well your friend Waifu introduced me to krautrock, and I've been listening to all the entry level bands, Can, Neu, Amon Duul II, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk etc. I like what I've heard so far, but haven't really been listening to much of the genre lately because I sort of got distracted by post-rock and one of my favourite bands, Dire Straits. I recently picked up their entire studio discography on vinyl. :D Now if only I could find a copy of Trout Mask on vinyl that doesn't cost a ridiculous sum of money...

Never heard of Secret chefs 3. Will check out!

Already know about John Zorn mainly for his work on the Naked City debut.
EmperorDemonGava Jul 13, 2015 6:03 PM
I'm convinced. Frank Zappa is the best.

Hm, that's very interesting to know. I didn't know that the orchestra hit had bee used as a sample in pop music; but then again, I'm not a fan of hip-hop. Which songs feature the sample?
No worries, I'm new to post-rock as well, but I feel I can safely say it's become one of my favourite genres. Albums I'd suggest are "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor for a more symphonic sound, and "F#A#(infinity)" by GY!BE for a more ambient, drone record. I don't know if you're a fan of electronic music, but "Agaetis Byrjun" by Sigur Ros is an excellent electronic post-rock record.

That would be so cool if you became famous as a composer! I can't write music, but one of my dream jobs is to be a producer or sound engineer in the music industry; I'm doubtful I could pull it off though. I know nothing about how to mix an album.

Where jazz is concerned, I've mostly been exploring the works of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. I'd have to say I actually prefer Coltrane over Davis at the moment. The albums I've listened to are "Bitches Brew", "Kind of Blue", "A Love Supreme", and "Blue Train". I also listened to Zappa's "Hot Rats" record, although that strays more toward jazz fusion. I'll make sure to check out those other artists you mentioned! As for Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto", I've ready heard it before; and yes, it is fantastic! That piece was one of the reasons I wanted to get into jazz music.

I should really get around to checking out more stuff from Beefheart's discography... I find myself listening to Trout Mask whenever I tell myself I'll listen to an album I haven't heard yet by him.
As for Zappa, I'm currently obsessed with Freak Out! as well as a few other albums by various artists (Tago Mago, Spiderland, Hospice). Now that I've mentioned it, I suppose I might as well ask you what your opinion of Tago Mago is?

What's your opinion on Uncle Meat?

How does Zappa's bootlegs hold up against his released material? Is it up to par?
EmperorDemonGava Jun 14, 2015 2:06 PM
Agree with Were only in it for the money. Will check out the capitol version of Lumpy Gravy. I don't like Absolutely Free as much as some of the others I've heard but then again I seem to like Freak out more than most.
EmperorDemonGava Jun 13, 2015 3:04 PM
Really enjoying Frank Zappa from what I've heard. I love Freak out and Were only in it for the money as well as One size fits all. Absolutely free is really good too.

I like to think of myself as being open to many different genres, but I don't think I'm worthy of being labelled a musician... xP I play guitar, albeit poorly because I only started playing a little over a year ago.

I don't really have a preferred style or time period of classical music... I'm also a fan of Debussy and Stravinsky, especially Stravinsky's 'The Firebird'. Another classical piece I am fond of is Mozart's Requiem mass. Since you enjoy classical music, what is your opinion of post-rock, in general? Have you heard any albums by Godspeed You! Black Emperor?

Do you compose music just as a pastime, or is it your career? Have you ever composed something for a film score?
I really want to get into jazz, but I'm having difficulty finding a good starting point. So far I've listened to Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew' and I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure whether to explore more of Davis' discography or branch out and explore other jazz artists and styles.
I'm not sure why I like Zappa... His music just has this eccentric quality that makes it very enjoyable for me. Some may call this blasphemy, but I actually prefer Beefheart; I suppose it may be because I haven't really explored Zappa's works past the most well known of them and his albums with The Mothers.

I don't know if I really qualify as a Beefheart fan since the only albums I've heard from him are Trout Mask Replica and Safe as Milk. Although I really enjoyed them, (especially Trout Mask,) I haven't really felt a strong urge to check out the rest of his work. Same deal with Zappa; I've listened to Apostrophe, Freak Out!, and Sheik Yerbouti, and feel no real need to delve deeper into his many works (although I did enjoy those three albums, especially Freak Out!).
I love Trout Mask Replica! It's one of my favourite albums of all time. My favourite genres of music are prog rock, blues rock, experimental rock, jazz rock, and indie rock. I'm willing to listen to anything unique though. What kind of music do you enjoy most?
emptycell May 22, 2015 5:06 PM
Is Trout Mask Replica your favourite album?
Aria-da-Capo May 16, 2015 3:33 PM
Thanks! First time I've heard Szymanowski actually, he seems pretty interesting.
Aria-da-Capo May 15, 2015 6:10 AM
Hi!
Since you're very expert in contemporary classical music, can you suggest me something? I would like something both lyrical and dissonant, and especially with a very dense texture.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
