This is one of our Achievements and contests topics.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Minimalist List Design contest. Feel free to donate your designs when you're done with them!

Special thanks to MAL staff (Kineta) for supporting us with the MAL Facebook page, and to Veriti and Oiomi-chan for helping me judge the Best of categories and Top ten. Thanks MonsterGuy for the suggestion of a Best Table category- good idea! Congratulations to our winners! I hope to see you all in the next contest!

Feedback?

Is there anything you would like changed about this contest style for future competitions? Maybe a new sub-category or contest theme idea? If you do, leave me your thoughts and opinion in this topic to consider. I'd especially like to hear from entrants about ways to improve their experience.

Next time I'll try to add more judges (5+), and also improve the voting system for less ties in overall rankings. In the future, I'd like to hold an ecchi/romance themed list design competition and another member card design contest like last summer. I'd also like to add sub-categories for Theme and Coding, which I decided weren't really appropriate for the theme of this contest.

Best imagery- Hahaido

When looking at a list, the choice of visuals the designer chooses makes the design memorable and pleasant to look at. Hahaido's simple animated background with Saber is quite simple but stunning at the same time, meeting the theme of the anime with the minimalist theme of the contest! The color and border choices help to offset this imagery nicely as well. The example pic is a animated GIF so the quality is not as high as seeing it in person!

Best use of color- Seaven

As TheHolyPotato perfectly pointed out, all the colors on this design blend together very nicely between the list and the banner image and dark backdrop. The white font choice on the list is extremely easy to read. The entire list is extremely refreshing to look at.

Most User Friendly - Daren

A very important category which many users don't consider. Especially for a minimalist contest! Which list is easiest to use and most functional? Daren's simple, fast-loading, and crystal-clear design wins this category. The color scheme and font choice even make it quite easy to read over other designs in the contest.

Most creative design - Nadeko_

Nadeko's arrangement of the many links and tables on a MAL list is quite unique to other lists we've seen in the past, and still manage to keep have a minimalist feeling and convenient spacing. Great work!

Best Menu design - Hahaido

Hahaido's menus are compact, unique and fun to play with. The text is customized to go with the theme of the layout and gives it a refreshing, video-game like feel! The example is an animated GIF.

Best Table design - Deividas

Devidas's tables combine clarity and readability with an original style right down to the icons and category menu! Its useful how the top bar is also a table that scrolls down with you.

Judge's critiques and feedback
Here, you can read what different judges in the contest thought about your designs if it interests you. You and other users can use the info for improving your work in the future.

Veriti

Hey guys! It was really pleasing to see such a good work you all did here.
I find personal list designs here quite different from the rest of the web. It's common to see list design turn to being fancy and creative, and it's an interesting thing to do. Unfortunately many lists (including mine!) tend to break things that are commonly used but not by us, like zoom, or not style everything (and forget about those #more elements), or not test it in different browsers or different resolutions, so your table is all messed up and you can't read text because it blends with wallpaper which is now positioned differently, or replace my cursor with something annoying and small so I have to get so close my nose touches the screen just to see it. Or make hover effects that change list layout (e.g. making font bold on hover) which makes table rows jump, or hover effects that make text hard to read. Also, for people who have removed the covers last minute, it's not that easy and sometimes not worth it. Sometimes using covers have effect on your list layout, and just removing them makes your list dimensions weird.

That was a long wall of text, wasn't it? But that's all the bad things I was gonna say. If you want to improve your style, just check against some of my points. And of course, that's just my own opinion.
Now, for the good things

Seaven's list was really impressive. It's not about just one strong point, everything is working together to make this design sleek and awesome.

Hahaido doesn't need any of my praises. I'd say, I didn't expect less.

Kiokuzoku has a nice style and choice of colors plus wallpaper. Neat.

Anonymoose-N and magost have those interesting borderless tables with only separating lines between them which gives them unique feeling.

Deividas has a very good style that could be what MAL would've looked if updated with more modern things. And table is just awesome.

Good job, everybody whom I didn't mention. I'm still impressed with what you have done, even though I didn't mentioned your personally

I know it's not easy to make a good list, but you can learn a lot in process and your skill will only improve if you continue. Thanks everyone for participating and good luck next time!

Oiomi-chan

Hahaido's really draws me in and makes me want to stay and look. Even though you've basically seen it all immediately I simply want to see more.

kiokuzoku: Nice design, but what really sets it apart for me is the links. If it was not for a few details this (would have scored higher).

Shishio-kun

@Devidas: Gorgeous tables to look at and use. You're the best overall "newcomer" imo. Great background pic too, and if it randomly changed to similar pics that would be a really cool addition (we have a topic on how to do that if interested). Maybe soon, we can use a design inspired by yours to make easy to use mobile-phone specific list designs (thats something we need imo).

@Daren: love the design, its definitely deserving the win for most useable design and its the one I would hope to see donated to this group the most. Since its simple I could emulate something similar in the future if it was never donated, but I would definitely credit you. The thing that helps it the most is the fixed menu. I think it could be made even more convenient through adding the Table header links (Score, anime title, etc) also to the fixed part in the future.

@Kiokuzoku: Another design I like a lot, would be great to see in alternate themes and colors.

@nadeko: This is a great design overall but we (judges) discussed that the list font could be improved in choice and also there is some inconsistency between the tables in other browsers/resolution. Personally I feel there's too much white all over, there should be a little color change (Like a "darker" white or beige in the background for example) as you go between different parts of the list. Those are just our opinions tho to take it from a 8/9 to higher, overall its a very original and great list.

Looking forward to see anything you all bring to any future contests!
