Can I watch Appleseed the Movie (2004) and Appleseed Saga Ex Machina and still get the whole story and etc. etc.?

Basically, I'm interested in the Appleseed series, though I don't want to watch Appleseed XIII and want to know if I can watch the two movies above as if It was a completely different series from Appleseed XIII and still get a story and not need a backstory or anything like that. I also would like to know if Appleseed Alpha is a sequel or an alternate universe, or just a remaster of the sort.
