Only ever water pokemon for me, and I usually just tank my starter until I come across a legendary of a different kind.

For me it's usually the fire Pokemon. However, if the water Pokemon is cool looking, then I'd go with that. For example, in Diamond I used Torchic, and then in Platinum I used Piplup.

I usually pick the one of the animal I like the most of. I don't own the current gen games but I would of picked Piplup because I like Penguins.

Because I would of bought both versions of the past games I would of gotten 2 of the three starters. I had Squirtle and Charmander first time, Chikorita and Cindaquil the second and I had Treecho the third (didn't buy another version that gen)

I always picked water pokemon.
I don't really know why, they just seemed the strongest at first.
Besides the first gym leader is almost always a rock user isn't he?

My first first pokemon I started was Bulbasaur (Grass), but I grew a liking to the fire type starters. Maybe for the challenge?

Charmander because he's the best pokemon ever and I never bothered to play anything other than Red

Well I don't really care for grass starters (except Chikorita), so that usually leaves fire or water. From there I usually just pick the one I find the cutest! lol I tend to lean towards fire though.

BLUE & RED: Bulbasaur, coz it could defeat the 1st 2 gyms with ease.
GOLD & SILVER: Cyndaquil, coz it was cute.
SAPPHIRE & RUBY: Mudkip, coz it had the best evolutions of the 3 starters.
DIAMOND & PEARL: Turtwig, coz it was based on a turtle, which is my favourite animal.

Torchic? You mean Chimchar?
As far as I know you can't even catch a Torchic in Diamond, you have to trade for it.

I choose the Water guys since they tend to turn into powerhouse tanks while most of the other water-types you find are more focused on speed instead of defense.

I'm talking about Red/Blue and Gold/Silver of course... I have no idea how the others turned out.

I chose water starters, because they would own the Fire, and usually if they had a move like scratch or tackle, they'd own the Grass starters.
Don't press this

Always a grass.

It depends on the version I'm playing.

Blue --> Squirtle. Because you're pretty much golden for two gym battles, and by the time you reach Surge, you should have decent Pokemon to fight his electric types. It's versatile and also just pretty cool. You're a moron to pick Bulbasaur. I know a lot of people want a Charizard in the end, but meh.

Crystal --> I didn't like any of them, but I just know I don't want Totodile or a useless Grass-type, so I went with Cyndaquil.

Ruby --> FIRE CHICKEN.

Pearl --> FIRE MONKEY.

Bulbasaur can run through first 4 gym fights easily. Vine Whip can whip your way through the first 2 gyms, then you'll have razor leaf for Surge. Flower vs Flower fight = easy as pie.

Charmander is cool too, though it will take Charizard to guarantee a win against Starmie, but meh, leveling to 36 is not that hard. After that, Charizard will run smoothly through everything.

Bulbasaur is just no for me.

Red and BLue = Bulbasaur and Charmander

Gold Silver = all 3 will do. Though chickoritta is a bit hard... but she's cute... Cyndaquil is my favorite too.

When it comes right down to it...
When ever I reach day care, I breed a level 5 sandshrew/Eevee/Vulpix and restart the game. Those 3 are the cutest pokemon T_T. I never evolve them.

Sandshrew = my favourite starter... well... twicked starter.

Blue/Red-Squirtle
Gold/Silver-Cyndaquil
Sapphire/Ruby-Torchic
Diamond/Pearl-Piplup

I always choose the cute one without fail. So looks are the only criterion, shallow I know.:) I NEVER choose grass ones, cuz with the sole exception of Bulbasaur/Chikorita, the rest are butt-ugly.

Blue/Red - Charmander
Gold/Silver - Cyndaquil
Sapphire/Ruby - Mudkip

The only starters I've truly neglected were the grass ones. Come to think of it, I don't use grass-types at all. As for my absolute favourite starter, Cyndaquil.

When I was younger I'd always go for the grass types, probably because I thought they were cuter. Now that I actually know what I'm doing, I usually go with fire and grind for hours. However, if I'm playing red/blue or firered/leafgreen, I go with squirtle because blastoise is awesome (:

red/blue/green= squirtle ( he fucks the other 2)
yellow= not pikachu O_o ( kidding)
silver/gold= totodile
crystal= cyndaquil
emerald/sapphire/ruby= mudkip
diamond/pearl= Piplup

... all in all, water type ones are better against other types ok pokemon ( can learn ice and you win against the others)
grass type... i once chose bulbasaur, he's cute >.> ..not chikorita, she's weak ( personal opinion)
fire are great too, but in real life i'd rather choose a water-type, more efficient (+ surf :D )

Red/Blue - Firebreathing Flying Lizard? okay.
Yellow - Never been Rai-chewed.
Gold/Silver - Simply because I had a fire type on Red/Blue.
Crystal - Because that little green thing was cute in the anime.
Ruby/Sapphire- Never played.
FireRed/LeafGreen- Never played
Emerald - Burning Chicken / Fighter? okay.
Diamond/Pearl - Steel Penguin, for the resistance it may have.
Platinium - Fire Monkey. Steel Penguin just wasn't offensive enough.
HeartGold/SoulSilver - Planning to get the green thing again.

Depends on which one, I usually think of which Pokemon from that region I'd rather have of that type.

But if I replay it, I always choose a different one, so I don't have two level 80 Blastoises or something.
