I'm looking for an anime (no manga) in which the main characters have actual chemistry. No forced, shallow interactions, but ones that appear natural and amusing. Subjective perhaps, but try me.

I'm pretty open to different genres, but I suspect stuff aimed at older females would be best. A recent example would be Higashi no Eden. I'm thinking of watching Nodame Cantabile. Honey and Clover wasn't really doing it for me with Hagu. I liked Maison Ikkoku. I'd watch Emma, but I just read the manga. Any others? Please make sure I haven't seen it yet. If it's on my plan to watch, then mention it.

What I'm NOT looking for:
standard shoujo romance with high school crushes
stuff like Junjou Romantica (not romantic, despite title)
harem stuff (esp no Key anime. I really don't like what I've seen)

You might want to give Only Yesterday a try. While romance isn't the central focus of the anime, there is definately some there and all of the interactions felt natural to me.

Hakushaku to Yousei comes to mind...it seems you just started watching it.

Yozakura Quartet characters probably have the best chemistry I've seen (the interaction between them is priceless imo), but the genre doesn't really fit your request I think.

The two main leads of Spice and Wolf work nice together. Rin & Archer pair in Fate/Stay Night make a great team, but you apparently dropped it.

To name a few more, Hatenkou Yuugi, Ghost Hunt and, to some extent, Aria could work.

Nana. It's barely linear in terms of the story compared to most romance/drama, but absolutely none of the characters feel forced.

FREAK YES to Nodame. And if you don't limit it to pure romcom, Dennou Coil and Ghost Hound have some very natural character chemistry.

Lovely Complex. Otani and Risa have serious chemistry going on there.

Though only 6 episodes have aired thus far, I'd recommend to you Bakemonogatari. The two main characters of Senjougahara and Araragi have some really interesting conversations. I think the chemistry between these two characters is really great. If anything, I'd tell you to watch it simply for the interaction between these two. Thus far anyway.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes. As usual.
Siegfried and Reinhard especially, but there's also some other brilliant interactions, pretty much everything Yang is involved with and not to forget the often humorous exchanges between Attenborough and Poplan.

Definitely give Nodame Cantabile a shot. The two mains have plenty of chemistry. And I agree with you about Honey and Clover, I tried it (it's one of the most recommend things when you say you liked Nodame Cantabile) but didn't like how the characters interacted with each other at all.

Thirding Spice and Wolf.

Weirdly enough adding Samurai Champloo. The Mugen-Fuu-Jin trio has great character interactions and wonderful chemistry. You can ship the three of them in any combination you want and it works.

Too be honest, most character with good chemistry tend to suffer from UST. Which means you're better off staying away from stuff that sells itself as romance. :(

Looks like I'll be trying Spice and Wolf, among a few others. I watched an episode of Bakemonogatari. Although it has an interesting look, it's not quite what I'm looking for in this particular request. Characters/people who refer to themselves as "tsundere" are often just plain bitches. A little less..uhh.. harsh for interactions.

You should keep going with Bakemonogatari and if by episode five you still don't like Senjougahara then I'd say don't bother with it anymore. Still, there's already been some significant development to her character in these first 5 eps.

I'd have to agree. After the first 2 episodes I thought the show was pretty mediocre, but episode 3 and on have been pretty spectacular.

Nodame for Sure

Also agree with Nana, Eureka 7, Samurai Champloo (it's true the chemistry was superb) and Ginban Kaleidoscope.

Not mentioned yet
Beck - wow, there is a subtle love story in there but it's like 3rd theme
Full Metal Panic - HAHAHAHAH wait till you get to Fumoffu
Paradise Kiss
Kare Kano

Okay, thanks--I'll give Bakemonogatari a bit more of a chance. I didn't like how much the guy was being walked all over/jerked around by her (more verbally I guess?). Spice and Wolf is better than I thought it would be so far. I like guys with uhh.. stones. :)
