| @Yubisoft Thanks for the style guide. So the answer is that オナニー comes from the German word "onanie," and the guidelines specify to "spell words and names in the original language, where possible." Thus, "Onanie" is the preferred romanization, just as "Master" is used over "Masutaa." I hadn't realized it was a loanword. How interesting. This Wikitionary page breaking it down was very informative. Biblically derived, actually, although the English equivalent "onanism" can also just be pulling-out. Fascinating.
