Is it possible to be deep into anime and a hyper-normie at the same time?

I always wanted to believe that i´m some kind of super weeb hyper otaku who watches hundreds of different anime, very niche stuff included.

But looking at my all time favorites... it´s all just the safe mainsteam ones like AoT, OPM, Mob, Death Note and so on. I don´t even have any merch, no figurines, no anime branded shirts, no anime spotify playlist, nothing. No one even knows i´ve been watching anime for like 15 years at this point.

I guess i fit the description :P

Sure. These days subcultures doesn't really exist either. When everyone is a unique and special individual no one is, so being a massive otaku wouldn't be any stranger than any other hobby

I think it is normal to like anime. In fact, it is strange/unusual to not like anime......

A normie is someone who follows "common sense", whose personality and consumption are just following trends, following what's popular of what the algorithm tells them, but only superficially (They don't wanna be nerds, right?).
If a normie plays video-games, then it's either a shooter of a sports game. They definitely aren't playing older stuff, though.
Music? Whatever the top 5 artists of Spotify are.
TV series? I guess they watch some episodes of The Office every once in a while. They might also watch ultra-popular stuff from NETFLIX or Disney+ if they have those, but they're not likely to get into fandom culture and stuff.

There are various forms of being a normie.
Your uncle is likely a normie, so are your neighbors.

I assume you want me to explain what a normie who watches anime does?
Again, there are various forms, especially depending on when and where.
Speaking specifically about nowadays, a normie might watch some ultra-popular or "close enough to western appeal" anime dubbed in some streaming service. Depending on the age they might be into some battle shounen, etc

Again, I could talk about normies all day long and I still would have more to say.
Normiedom is a spectrum.

Actually, at this point just read MinMod's tweets about normies, she's the one that radicalizes me against them nowadays...

Everyone does this to some degree. You are lying to yourselves if you disagree.

Baldur's Gate 3 was incredibly mainstream. It was basically a "normie game". Witcher 3 was one of the best selling games of all time and Cyberpunk 2077 as well, and those are still action RPGs (I guess you could argue 2077 is a "shooter" I still see it as an RPG though). Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, and the Sims are 11th, 13th and 17th respectively in best selling games of all time. Cozy games are pretty mainstream, especially among women (though I enjoy them too). Minecraft is #1.....I think you are being very over general with "normie games'. Normie games can in fact be quite diverse.

Plus if you think the people who play games like Squad, Escape from Tarkov, or Football Manager are normies....I got some news for you. The Russians who obsess over CS GO are definitely not normal.

So if I enjoy classical music, and I go to the orchestra, a pretty socially acceptable/classy thing to do I am not a normie? Cool.

Marvel and Star Wars had big followings, and the fandom for those are about as strong as any IP over here. The fandoms for shows like Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Star Trek etc were very strong, and again a lot of people cosplayed, and got excited over it. Still yeah I mean yeah most people are "normies" by the benefit of not being in their teens/20s for most of their lives. Once you get older, getting heavily invested into these things, beyond a private interest/casual conversation is hard/socially unacceptable. Normies have kids, or have busy jobs, and yeah that limits how overly involved you can be in any hobby. I have felt this to some degree. I don't watch as much as I used to in Uni/HS.

Nah it's pretty yes or no, in regards to being a normal person. People who think they aren't normies, because they are overly into a certain hobby, only demonstrate their own lack of socialization. Everyone has something they obsess over, whether that be sports, knitting, wood working, board games or researching their genealogy.

I am a normie, because I an not anti social a-hole. The fact I have watched obscure mecha anime doesn't mean I am in fact different than anyone else. The people you might find casually into anime, may also be heavily into older films or reading, maybe it's not a media hobby at all, and they just like to fish, cook, puzzles, history (honestly my main hobby way more than anime) or playing the piano or something...again everyone has something they like to focus on.

What makes you not normie, and weird Wiru is all your weird ideas/postings on MAL. It's not how much/what you are watching.

I'll have to admit that my definition of what is a normie is far from perfect and that I'm prone to commit mistakes when classifying so in mediums I'm not an expert.
And granted, nowadays I barely have contact with normies due to being a NEET, so they might as well be a mythical creature for me...

Yeah so don't do that. I don't pretend to be a cinephile or that I know a ton about popular music, when I mostly listen to video game OSTs, classical music and niche folk music. If you don't know what popular games are out there, why use it as an example?

The constant weird need to be a "true otaku". The very pseudo intellectual openings/thread titles, about topics that are largely about anime fandom musings, which really boil down to "I don't relate with anyone in this community" etc etc. Normal people don't feel the need to write essay, after essay about this. And yes, normal people can still watch old or niche anime, and have a completed list above 400 or whatever MAL's cutoff is. Normal people have hundreds of completed books on good reads...Outside of the internet, which needs to touch grass, normality is decided by behavior not interest.

They aren't really.
