Tbh it bothered me a bit since I have seen the whole ‘I don’t like guys but you are the exception’ thing in many boys love anime before. It feels weird because we know that the character is not going to be written as bi, despite that being a great explanation for Miyano previously liking a girl. (Assuming he now likes Sasaki)

It also seems like they are trying to say the characters are somehow not gay, since in this episode both boys said that they don’t like guys. I’m not sure why this is necessary when they obviously both like each other. It’s like saying ‘no homo’. In a gay love story. Clearly they are either gay, bi or other, but this kind of writing seems to imply that the author wants them to be straight with the exception of each other.
I think that in this case making them demisexual (only feeling that way for each other) would make more sense. (I may be wrong, apologies if this is inaccurate)

I am aware of Japanese society being different but I wish that if a Japanese straight woman is going to write a boys love that they might consider many gay people are not ever under the impression that they are straight.

I don't buy their attraction. Maybe the quality of BL mangas they read are so bad or stereotypical and reductive that they still can't figure out what same-sex attraction means. If you get attracted to a guy, that means you're attracted to boys as well. Having a crush on a girl in the past doesn't cancel that. It's feeling like the "I accepted him because I didn't want to lose him or because he was nice to me" trope at this point.
