Japan, obviously. The only reason why it has become successful over here is because it appeals to a different culture that many of us find exotic and interesting, in an era where most of our domestic products are full of insufferable pandering. The fact that anime and manga appeals to Japan is the reason why it is successful over here, too.

Japanese audience, definitely. It's the most important market of the anime industry. Even if today Japanese animation is popular worldwide, the country of origin (here it's Japan, obviously) is the most important when it comes to choosing a target audience or popular tropes when making an anime series.

I agree, although studio/creators are aware of audience/fans outside Japan as it help motivate them one way or another that they're being appreciated.

All things being equal the Japanese fanbase will matter for more. If the international market grows significantly larger than the domestic market (it hasn't happened yet) then I can see the international fanbase becoming the driving force, but this higher market share must remain consistently high for a sustained period (probably something close to a decade) before the shift in influence becomes noticeable. In short, I don't see international audiences having a dominate sway on anime production in the foreseeable future.

@DreamWindow I think i do agree with what you said but could you expand on the "insufferable pandering"? Are you saying western animation is too repetitive?

Nowadays though? 60% of anime revenue comes from outside Japan, and this number is increasing every year. It won't be long (10-20 years max) before japanese studios start catering the content towards "modern western sensibilities". It won't be long anon. Enjoy it while it lasts.

@trinitroglycerin Pandering to one's preferred political or social in group. Culture war nonsense, basically. It seems like the first and foremost thing that many creators are trying to do in their comics / films / whatever is to own their political opponents. Japan just wants to tell a good story.

Anime has mostly existed by only being supported by the Japanese audience. And even though its far more mainstream now the western audience is still just an afterthought.

Western fanbases are obviously irrelevant. Otherwise high school dxd season 5 would have been made by now.

It is mainly japanese and Chinese audiences. Date a live spirit pledge from chins helped date a live get more seasons. Also mihoyo games. And they have gundam bases in china and south east asia. The life size freedom gundam in shanghai is a huge attraction

Japanese audiences are ultimately what matters when studios and production committees decide to continue a specific series.

Rent-a-Girlfriend is one example that comes into mind. Despite how much hate the series gets outside of Japan, it managed to have 3 seasons worth of material.

Another example would be shows such as Princess Principal, as well as the new adaptations for Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Space Battleship Yamato. Despite how niche such shows are outside of Japan, their revenue streams in Japan itself is seemingly sufficient enough to meet expectations to justify new entries.

Japan is their primary market. If that failed, there would be no international branches saving it.

Unfortunately the japan fanbase... which sucks because the average japanese otaku's taste in anime is shit. So it's always the same self insert, LN adapted, harem fantasy anime that get adaptations.
Its either that for loli/yuri bait stuff. Lose, lose situation really.
