It is an important factor, especially in making great anime into a masterpiece, but a great soundtrack cannot turn a shit anime into something good.

Guilty Crown is an easy example.

it's important because it sets the mood and attracts you to the anime.

Personally, I find soundtrack important enough to add a point or two to the rating if it's amazing, or to lower score for a point if it's bad. Most of the stuff I play or watch, I choose because it had a good soundtrack. But that's just me being subjective.

Objectively, soundtrack is sometimes more important than good directing. It sets up the mood, build the atmosphere, gives you cues... watching anything without soundtrack really takes from the experience. The main reason why I was barely able to stomach first 12 episodes of Stein's gate was it's lack of soundtrack. They didn't have anything wrong with them, I just couldn't get into the anime. Of course, once they started using it, it made it all the more impact full. Take spotlight for example - full score is thirty minutes long, but every time any piece plays, people are close to tears.

A good soundtrack is very important because it's a part of an anime's presentation and helps you enjoy what you're watching. Izetta the Last Witch's soundtrack was one of the reasons why I bothered watching all of the episodes, despite the later episodes going downhill in terms of quality. The soundtrack is so good that I actually bought an import of the original soundtrack CD on Amazon back in February.

A bad soundtrack can seriously ruin an anime for me. That was why I dropped Puzzle & Dragons X after 4 episodes. The soundtrack is so awful and esoteric to me, expect for the opening and ending theme (those were awesome).

Some anime can survive with a meh-inducing soundtrack. Others don't. The more expressive your anime is and the more abstract it is, the more it'll need music to go along with it.

Flip Flappers, an NGE-esque Magical Girl anime desperately needed a soundtrack to go along with the beautiful animation. I found myself failing to immerse because it lacked one.

pretty big actually. I scored animes with good soundtracks 2 points highter than they deserve
The stars are distant as always
Still shining with the light of their grand deaths in vacant space
Let it penetrate the darkness when a beast roars a final wail
Let it penetrate my heart so I can share your pain

It compliments the visuals and enhances the atmosphere, mood, and emotion of certain scenes, but otherwise all it means is whether or not I'll have a new album to listen to.

It's really important for me, it's one of the things I look forward every time I watch an anime. Honestly if an anime it's not that good, but has a great soundtrack... at least it will be remembered by that.

In your experience, are anime soundtracks generally worthwhile? Western films tend to have crappy, unoriginal scores.

A good soundtrack can't fix everything, Air has the best soundtrack ever, but it is ranked lower than Kanon or Clannad, its inferiors in the soundtrack department but those were actually well executed adaptations.

Yeah, I understand what you mean with western films, I agree on that. There are some good ones, but compared to anime... japan for me really stands on the top.

Generally, they are worth for me. At least in most animes I've watched, the soundtracks have been pretty good (some were the whole soundtrack has been amazing). Of course, there have been animes that doesn't a good soundtrack overall, but even in those, I could save one or two bgms.

I find that there is more variety in sound design in anime. The composers are unafraid of trying new things and freely use guitars or electronica. Western composers are still stuck on orchestras.

Not fundamental unless it's a music-themed anime or highly connected to music.

Soundtrack helps a lot with setting the atmosphere and mood of the scene.
