Do a lack of character deaths (in an appropriate setting to warrant them) end up undermining the entire experience?

What would be the point of killing him for good? it wouldn't have had an impact on the characters or the plot like other significant characters who died. I would have been pretty mad if he stayed dead because it would have been for the shock value of killing a main character ergo pointless. |
