Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, my all-time favorite manga... Two OVA mini-series of a pair of 25-30 minute episodes were released.... first OVAs in 1998, second set in 2002.... 2 hours wasn't enough for a series that was up to 9 volumes by that point...

Many fans were upset that certain characters from the manga didn't appear in the OVAs while some, like Takahiro, whose part was pretty big in some YKK stories, hardly had any screen time in the OVAs.

Beyond that, the animation and character designs weren't the greatest, voice acting was soso, and music was soso.... the closing theme of the first OVA pair was kinda sad to me.... Ultimately, it's hard to portray a comedy-drama series about the end of the human race (and, eventually, the end of the offshoot robot race) in the span of 2 hours... If YKK had just amounted to the original pilot manga, that could have been possible.
And, about the pilot.... it was condensed into an opening theme sequence in the first OVA pair, stripped of all the charm that led to readers in Japan enabling YKK to go in three months from a one-shot to a 12-year-long series and major sci-fi award winner in 2007!

If a quality studio that would care about the manga would committ to at least 26 episodes, this could become an anime classic if handled right....

However, I'll conclude with this.... some really great manga will never be done justice in anime form. And if some of our faves stay manga only, there's nothing wrong with that. Those that just anime and not manga, it'll be their loss :-)

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. the anime movie skims the top of the first 2 volumes. (there are 7) its ok as a standalone if you havent read the manga but after you read the manga you dont go back.

For me it backwards. I watch anime first then read the manga. So I can't say which anime was bad and the manga was good. Wow looking at all these post I feel so lonely. Maybe it's just that I like both the anime and the manga too much to say which is better.

I guess I'm weird like that.

Well, Naruto without the filler would be much better. The manga is pretty straight to the point.

Same thing for a lot of shounen and long series.

all modern Jump Sires adaptations because of filler

adaptations from Shounen Sunday or Champion manga has never had this issues
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one

Rurouni Kenshin.
I love the manga. It's what I started out on, the art and story is amazing, everything about it is awesome. The anime is a horrendously drawn waste of time without an ending, and an insult to Watsuki's work.
That being said, the OVA's, Trust & Betrayal and Reflection, are not only beautiful, but carry on the excellent story of the manga. So not everything animated that's come out of Kenshin is terrible.

I think we can agree on Beelzebubs adaptation. It was FILLED with fillers.

Exactly. This topic essentially begins and ends with "Blade of the Immortal". That one is impossible to top.

Although I agree that that BotI anime was crap (and I LOVE the manga), I do believe it can be topped. Read Samurai Deeper Kyo and then watch the anime. It in NO WAY resembles the manga. About the only they have in common are the names of the characters.

All Negima adaptations are terrible. It's because the first two volumes of Negima are terrible, and that's what they're based off of. The shows focus too much on the harem and never get to the shonen parts. I really wish they would do an adaptation of the Mahora Festival arc.

I'm mixed on Spiral. They did a good job with the plot based off the manga, but once they diverged from that it turned terrible. I'd really like it if they remade it.

most of the adaptations of CLAMP's work don't do justice to the manga, especially Tsubasa (except the OVAs), Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda OVA, Kobato (although I certainly do not love the manga either)

Off the top of my head - Sugar Sugar Rune. I cannot stand the voice for Chocolat. She was incredibly monotonous whenever she said "-sugar- -sugar- -rune-, -choco- -rune-" I dropped after 1 episode.

Had I seen the anime first, I probably would've never bought the manga.

Bakuman - the anime wastes so much potential. It feels like the animation studio took colored manga panels and just animated the mouth movements. This isn't enough for a dialogue driven series.

the only anime i HATE in comparison to the manga is rosario+vampire

they (studio gonzo) took a manga with plot and character development and LITTLE fanservice and turned it into a crappy, cliched harem anime with MORE fanservice.

other than that, i tend to be open minded towards others, like negima and gantz for example. the tv show for the both of them were ok, but their manga counterparts are far better.

Angel Sanctuary~!

The manga is AMAZING, read it through to the end and you're like... Wow... That's crazy, how did anything think of all of that? Favorite manga of all time. Got around to the anime, don't watch it. It's just a few episodes that only covers 1/5th of the manga. I don't know about the subbed version, but the dubbed version is horrible! The voices are like nails on a chalkboard and the dialogue is poorly done...

All and all, READ Angel Sanctuary, DON'T WATCH the anime. >.<;;;

Magic Knight Rayearth (2nd half) - I really liked the first season of the anime, but they changed ALOT when they did the 2nd season, some of these big changes I was not happy with either. Heck its not even the same story anymore.

Tsubasa Chronicle - The manga was great but the TV anime was HORRID (not counting Yuki Kaijura's awsome score).

Tokyo Mew Mew - The manga was adorable. While it was alot like Sailor Moon, it still tried to be unique in its own way, making it a very enjoyable read. The anime, however, they took that Sailor Moon-alikeness and ampted it up big time, turning it into a total SM clone. While I do love Sailor Moon, and would have loved the TMM anime, by the time I could finally see the anime for TMM I had grown out the the stage in life where I would have liked more of these kinds of shows.

Now this one I don't nessicarly "hate", but I was still incredibly annoyed with it...

Sailor Moon - The manga was amazing, while they turned the anime into a marketing tool as 3/4ths of the whole anime are filler. Then add in how they greatly changed the personalizes of much of the Sailor Senshi and rewrote the story (ESPCIALLY SuperS). But as much as I want to hate it, I just can't. Despite all the changes, it still has a certain charm to it. Then add in how I saw the anime before ever learning of the manga's existence.

Thats all for now...might add more later.
