Just finished the second season and have the same empty feeling in me that you guys also do. Don't lose hope, Hajime no Ippo aired in 2000 and didn't get it's anime sequel until 2009! |

The light novel version is working for me. I've always liked novels. Because of my experience of the anime, though, this series is special. I know what these people look like! The l. n. version is actually better than the anime in one respect: There's lots of dialog in the anime that you can't understand why they're saying it (not to mention the economic wheeling and dealing!). If book form this stuff is way easier to understand. |

totally just throwing a speculation out but here is my idea on season 3: look for an announcement late this year or early next year. --------------- Reasoning --------------- sources: http://www.yenpress.com/spice-and-wolf-novel/#V1 -------- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spice_and_Wolf_episodes you will see that season 1 is composed of volume 1 & 2 season 2 is volume 3 & 5 but now their already up to volume 8 (9&10 to come out later this year) look at the dates between when the anime came out and when the novels came out. volume 1 came out December 2009, while season 1 came out January - march 2008. how often do you see an anime that comes out BEFORE the novel? and it was out almost 2 years before the novel! now on to season 2: it was released july - september 2009. but the novels for the story came out December 2010 - 2011. another 2 whole years before! they did it again, novel 2 years after the anime. the whole reason the first series of FMA sucked was because it cought up to to the manga and she didn't want the anime to spoil the books. while spice and wolf, passed the novels story line by 2 years every time! now that the novel has caught up and passed the anime (volume 6 -7 - 8 - 9 - 10) they can now go ahead with what i think will be season 3 (volume 6 & 8) and season 4 (volume 9 - 10). because everyone who watched spice and wolf got so hooked, the novel sales exploded because the anime ends in the middle of the adventure. and I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple OVA/special episodes covering volume 7 (because volume 7 is: "a series of short vignettes focusing on the fans’ favorite characters") but that just me hoping my favorite anime will double in size and make my life complete ^.^ |

I get what you mean and I agree with you^^ What I was trying to make clear is that the anime was not ended because it caught up with the novels; because the anime never did catch up. It must have been because of other reasons... As you say; popularity probably is the reason. Anime is a business so as a company you would want to fit inside the mainstream market. I am sure, though, that (this) anime production is NOT intended solely for export. so if the series was discontinued because of (bad) popularity in Japan. Then a potential third season would have to be for export only and then foreign response matters (That response would have to be a big though!). Of course the series could have ended because of a different reason. Guess I'l just continue hoping... |

But wait you are looking at the american release dates that have nothing to do with the release of the anime in Japan.... Translating the novels has nothing to do with when the anime is made, the first volume of SaW came out in 2006 in JAP, volume 5 was released in 2007. Right now the series has ended 2 years ago (JAP novels) and still nothing happened. I'm not saying that we will never get season 3, but I'm saddened by the fact that they seem to put more interest in lazy comedy harems right now, just because boobs make more profit.... After watching both seasons I really wish for a season 3 in the future, but if its not happening, maybe Ill pick up the novels. But I have a question(s). Do you get the same conversations between Kraft and Holo? Does both of them have a strong personality or is the anime better if you wont spoil the characters you know? Thanks! |

@blumenz I'd recommend reading one of them first and see if it fits your taste. If yes, then buy em all! As mentioned, it is 90% Lawrence's perspective. Personally, I love it just as much as the anime, and a bonus is that I like Lawrence and Holo almost equally; individually or together, even outside of the series. Of course, no Anime and Light Novel can ever have the exact same "presentation", there will always be those minor things. But in the end, Spice and Wolf is of course... Spice and Wolf, and it does a good job at being just that. :) |

Volume 4 was also a side-story that wasn't included in the anime, so it might be worth checking out for you too. |

I'd say read volume 4, and if you like it, continue with 6 on. The books slow down a bit here and there where the anime ended, so don't expect them all to be as good as the material you've seen in the anime. If you're willing to read some slower stuff, then you shouldn't be disappointed. The official translation needs to get through another 2 or 3 novels before the really good stuff starts up again, but that's not to say that the parts it's going through now suck - they're just not necessarily as great as the parts that were animated. |

You'll be reading a lot more Lawrence, and world-building, as opposed to how Holo is "glorified in the anime" at times. Though I'm assuming that isn't literally the sole reason lol. I'm not saying that she's not the same wise-wolf; she's definitely the same :) (as is their relationship focus), but there's a lot more emphasis and details spent on many things. |

Of course. If think its the intellectual relationship that interest me the most, not the Holo character. Its sound like I would be able to enjoy the novels. It all comes down to I would much rather prefer a continuatuon of the Anime and I would be saddend to have spoiled the plot be reading the novel. |

Although I kinda got bored with Volume 8-15 because that certain character was introduced and took up all the 'screentime'. Less Lawrence-Holo interactions, she becomes more cold towards him imo, mainly because she is using Cole to not get too attached to Lawrence. Once he's finally gone in Volume 15, things get good again. Although, I still don't know which chapters in the Epilogue are side stories and which ones are part of the main plot. There's 10 more volumes of the main story which the anime hasn't covered, which would mean about 5 more seasons. Very few good anime have gone on for that long. It'd be even longer than FMA. Spoiler tags please. |

I seriously made a profile just so I could comment on this thread. Such is the extent of my craving for this series to continue. If nothing else, I think it's a testament to just how special this story is that this single forum thread has lasted almost two years (and was three years down the line from the ending already), with newcomers consistently reiterating how fantastic this series is. I'd only want this to happen if they absolutely could bring back their dub voice actors. Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum absolutely made this show with the subtlety and charm of their performances. A question for those who have read the light novels: I became intrigued by season one, where there was (imho) a finer balance between sincerity and guardedness (Wolf and Distant Past is a perfect example of this for me). Season two, and I should think the light novels it's based on, pushes the dynamic more toward a mainstream Tsundere vibe. Does this trend continue as the journey goes on? Even if it does, I'm seriously considering picking these up, as Lawrence really managed to bloom as a character in season 2, becoming more vocal and charming. It really showed the transition that the lonely peddler had undergone alongside his companion, and I die for character growth in stories like this. Keep hoping, folks. You never know when someone like me may come along on a thread like this, straight off my binge and feeling lonesome from having stepped abruptly out of this fantastic tale. |

Really hope there's more. I've heard no legitimate news on it but if there is a season 3, I'll jump onto seeing it. |
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice! - Doflamingo |

Hanged_Man said: A question for those who have read the light novels: I became intrigued by season one, where there was (imho) a finer balance between sincerity and guardedness (Wolf and Distant Past is a perfect example of this for me). I've read untill the start of Town of Strife which is like Novel 8 or something? Anyway, they're excellent and you'll see alot more growth from Lawrence as a person. I don't know for sure what a tsundere is or whatever... I don't think Holo&Lawrence's delicate relationship can just put in a box/category. They're both keeping themselves from truly loving each other for reasons you've probably already discovered by watching the anime series. But for how long does that keep up? I don't know, that'd be a spoiler :]. Anyway, that's only concerning their relationship. Don't forget the economics and plots that lawrence as a merchant encounters or the other characters. Shit goes down, always. Even the Side Colors book entertained me, it's about sidestories from the characters. The first sidestory gives more insight into holo. Anyway they're excellent go get them. As for a season 3....... I really don't think it'll happen BUT I REALLY HOPE IT DOES. Anyway, just a minor way to express our support towards Spice&Wolf: http://www.change.org/petitions/funimation-we-want-you-to-use-your-influence-to-help-create-season-3-of-spice-and-wolf |

And yet again I complete another fantastic anime, desperately clutch for information on another season and leave with the conclusion that this anime will never continue. As someone who doesn't particularly like reading manga or light novels, this really sucks ass. |

I felt the same way but the novels are actually quite good, I was surprised myself how much I enjoyed them. |
